The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

If I still had my Canon kit I'd possibly have bought a couple of Arts.

Funny how Sigma gone from worthy but dull through rather good and on to amongst the best you can get.

I was wondering how do you find the battery life on the A7, did it improve in the A7 II? Currently I have 4 batteries and I have to keep all charged so I can take like 600-800 shots a day

I've had Fuji xt1 only lasted 4 days it went back though it was poor well to me anyway. The Sony is much better. But people are getting great shots with the Fuji

I love the Fuji's to use and found the files a struggle until I got better at processing them, great system but I was always a bit put off by the sensor, the X-Pro 2 looks like it sorts that!

As we're only also mentioning Sony's :D

To me the big draw with the Fuji's is the manual dials but for a mostly (almost exclusively) prime user like me the Fuji is the size of an A7 so why not have the A7? Ah... those manual dials... The lack of raw at high ISO's would bug me but I don't know if that's fixed with the new 2 thing.

Oh well, I keep looking at the Fuji's and the Sony A6000 series too but I can't see either displacing my A7 and despite my gripes with MFT I think that's relatively safe too. Fuji has those dials though :D

I was never that keen on the purely manual dials probably because I'm not old enough to have used anything but digital.... that said when I last used an XT1 I thought the manual controls were great, must just have been used to them!
The lack of RAW on the expanded ISO options seems to have been sorted on the X-Pro 2 and truth be told I rarely use an ISO beyond 1600 on anything, not even the D750.

I didn't dislike the A7ii, in fact I enjoyed using it immensely, I liked the fact that it can be either a fairly small camera with a prime or can basically be a full frame DSLR with a grip added (Handy when landscaping).

I even thought the Canon glass on it worked really well and despite not owning any actually gave an option to pickup cheaper, good glass where the native stuff is quite pricey and in some cases questionable.... (16-35/24-70/70-200).

Rocket blower saved me today with our dust magnets.... A must for anybody's bag I must say

Always good to have part of the kit, I have a Zeiss cleaning kit with is a handy kit as it attaches to your belt. :)

As you know I mostly use primes but have read a few zoom review and I thought I'd read that the 16-35mm was very good? The 70-200mm too?

I have the 16-35 and the 70-200 and am very pleased with both. I wish the 70-200 had a wider aperture, but then it would have to be heavier!

16-35 is good but almost £1000 the Canon is around £600 and by most accounts actually better. Same with the 70-200

Thought I hadn't imagined those good reviews.

think there was a thing where early reviews said the lenses where great, then later ones got worse...

the 11 to 18 is actually really good on ff, but limited range

I tried two different copies of the 16-35 before deciding to purchase, and all three have been really good and sharp. The 70-200 is also very good, a 2.8 version would be better for portraits but it is still good enough - for the closer portraits I really need an 85 or 135 prime.
Maybe it's time to try the manual focus Samyang, as I always use the focus magnifier to fine-tune focus on the eye. Anyone having good results with one?

My 16-35 is a fine bit of kit. No problems so far. Wouldn't pay the uk price for it though.

i think some of comes from sonys current/recent poor quality control too, and sample variation, but someone on the facegroup had had 2 or 3 bad 16 35's :/

Fair enough, consider me educated :)

What are they? I can only think of the normal 2...

AF/MF
OSS on/off
then?

Not sure what mode 1-2 is but other is focus limitation

Yup, focus limiter and steadyshot off/on.
Probably a focus lock button too.

Interesting review of the RX1RII at DPR...

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/rx1r-ii-review/10

In the conclusion the reviewer states...

"The Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II is the world's smallest full-frame camera, featuring a 42MP sensor, fixed ZEISS 35mm F2 lens, pop-up electronic viewfinder and excellent autofocus system. It promises absolutely excellent image quality in a package that fits into your coat pocket, but so-so handling, large file sizes, a clunky user interface and short battery life will turn off some users."

I wonder if this reviewer will be making a similar comment when reviewing other cameras which produce large files? IMO this is an odd statement, surely anyone in the market for one of these cameras will have enough brain cells to be able to equate the sensor type to larger files? Maybe not...

Nah it's a common complaint even for the 36mp Nikon D800

(oops, I did it again :D)

IMO it's the sort of thing you'd have to explain to someone who's lights were on but you suspected weren't home.

I suppose this is the world we live in these days... treat everyone like an idiot or they'll sue you.

What remote shutter release people using please?

Just a cheap JJC one. Works fine though.

Bought it from Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LITLE...TF8&colid=2NPEX0MVVEFGK&coliid=I3DVU3T93TME9V

I don't suppose anyone is thinking of selling a Samyang 14mm E-mount?

by it in nikon or canon and get a tilt/shift or similer adapter. my mum got a cheap tilt adapter off amazon for 10quid that does tilt only, think its a fotodiox adapter. imo your better off to buy a slr mount with the samyang lenses if you can get a decent adapter at a decent price and leave it on all the time. if you change to say fuji then u just need to get a new adapter, or u could use it on the slr camera, and maybe greater resale value.

That's a good idea Paul as if I get the Canon version the Missus can use it for astro as well on her camera. I like the idea of getting a tilt adapter as well. Cheers.

selling the wifes copy of the Samyang 50mm that has been used on a7sii with metabones amazing lens for the money in the canon section if anyone wants to look ;-).................... the tilt adapters never heard of an adapter do they work sim to the tilt shift lenses?

From what I've read - yes. It seems tilt-shift is fairly available for Nikon to Sony and tilt only for Canon to Sony (this is from memory so might have this wrong).

I think the cheap ones don't have the control of a proper tilt-shift lens, but for a tenner it's worth a try right?

cool will have a look into one always fancied the canon tse but not sure I would use it.....
