The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

yep exactly he said to me " cant get a decent pic out of this f..... thing " I spoke to him on the phone and I thought he was having a laugh and was pulling my plonker lol..... when he turned up with the 645z and the 1dx I did make a smart comment of " what did u buy that crappy thing for " and when he said ah it was only a few grand I realised who/what I was dealing with ..... I had never used a 645z before I took a headshot with led light of him in my studio and he couldn't believe it had came out of the same camera lmao

Fairly disappointed with my A7 yesterday. Need to keep expectations in check and choose the right tool for the job next time. Still enjoy it though.

Like today I ain't bloody bothering it p***ing it down

What was wrong? Can't understand this as I love mine better then I did with the d750.

I actually get a kick out of cheap kit.

Although the price of SLR era lenses seems to be rising luckily I got mine while they were reasonably cheap. The A7 is the best camera I've even had but to be honest I get a lot of enjoyment out of using my Panasonic G1 and a cheap used lens.

I do agree with the life is short thing, when we're on our death bed money in the bank doesn't matter and I really should buy those voigtlander lenses I'm always looking at but sadly I suspect I'll always be a tight arse. :(

@twist what did you do yesterday???????????

AWB is a little frustrating, should've set it custom beforehand as I know it struggles under artificial light with accurate skin tones ( I do shoot RAW but accurate WB as you probably know are a must with skin tones). Oh, and the AF, couldn't keep up. TBF though, it was a kids party and they didn't stop but I knew I chose the wrong camera that day very quickly.

I did like the fast live view shooting though when I had the camera over heads etc. Useful.

The CV lenses are great, 40 1.4 SC with mono is lovely, I also had the 50 1.5, now that is stunning. Probably pick up both for around £500 used.

@woof woof totally agree mate my kids will have the house not a lot else apart from camera equipment lmao

nothing wrong with wanting the cheapest etc .... I always look at adverts and people put cheap as possible one day I'm going to put an advert on just to be different saying as expensive as possible please lmao......

the a7 is a camera that we all love hence we are here... long may it continue ( although it is draining my bank account all the time I love it lol)

Twist... Couldn't you do a custom wb on the day? Just takes seconds to point the camera at a door or something and set it or jusr adjust it in view until it look right?

Tbh I sometimes do this even though I shoot raw and don't care about wb but it stops people looking at my shots on the back screen and saynjng the colours are off.

Must get looking then.

@twist was it an a7 mk 1? the awb to me is a little odd I agree I pre set my custom always but if you forget it is awkward in post sometimes to get them as accurate as u want.....

How can you select and co figure a quick custom WB

I know, I should've done beforehand as per my other post. Sonys are pretty decent with custom WB, for e.g. I have some 2700k LED bulbs in the lounge, so I set the custom WB and it was okay, a few finer tweaks via the colour grid thing after reviewing in LR and I have a good preset for this room.

A good custom is always better than just using AWB, even with RAW.

I had a cv lens but I gave it away. I still have boxes full of Rokkor, Zuiko and FD snd I am always tempted by the classic looking Voigtlanders but I hafe a problem with the idea of spending £1K plus on a hobby I hardly get time to persue these days. Looking after someone is turning into a 24/7. Didn't get to bed unti 5 two nights this week and trying to hold a love life togethrr too means I have very little free timr. Often my ohotography fix is when walking to the chemist or a few minutes in the garden.

Still, must'n't grumble too much as caring is a privilege.

I forget sometimes @twist it can be done in post but I agree it is a pain to get it spot on sometimes

Yes mate, the A7rii WB looks better though from what Ive seen.

It's a doddle :D Have a look and you'll get there. I have three set up for different lighting or you can just go to k and adjust for best effect. Simples.

was just going to say that the r and ii handle lighting changes better but still not 100%

Actually I quite like it when the camera gets the wb wrong sometimes as the colours can really add to a shot... there are a times, places and subjects when it has to be right though :D

See here, the A7i RAW colour isn't the best for skintones imo.... the 7rii being much closer to my D750.

yep agreed @woof woof can be a godo thing sometimes I find the a7rii and a7ii with my icelight2 have a very purple tinge to it weird tbh

yep can see it @twist odd tbh lol

Yeah, I fight the jaundice look quite often in post, its just the way the A7 colour is rendered in its RAW files. Its not so bad with other subjects but I take photos of people mostly so it has to be good.

yeah I take a lot of people photos and have to adjust in post a little on a7ii not majorly but tbh it still better than my canons wb by someway lol

In natural light its far less noticeable and the colours pretty much bang on. Dim the lights or step into artificial and it starts and then it becomes really important for a custom WB ime. My D750 is on AWB in the same lighting and its very good. Ah well, one of those things, just try work around it.

How does the live view on the d750 compare?

yep agreed the icelight goes purple on a7rii etc and goes blue on canon etc lol weird

Live view on the Sony is street ahead from the one on the D750 as expected due to no mirror i believe.. I love the live view on this sony I use it... On the D750 only used it when on tripod for landscape

I can use the D750 live view for most subjects and its decent but I wouldn't use it for moving subjects. Mirrorless LV is better, so is SLT. There are no phase pixels on a DSLR sensor (excluding a select few Canons).

the one feature I love about the sony coming from canon is the peaking for manual focus that feature alone has made me revaluate the way I shoot somethings
