Yeah nice lens. Focus on mine was a bit clunky though. Think it weighs double that of my Batis.

TBH I'm not too keen on the cats eye highlights you can get with the Batis and I'm waiting to see if the much rumoured Sony 85mm f1.x will appear and until then or I get tired of waiting I suppose my old manual 85's will have to do.

What cats eye highlights. I have both Batis lenses and I am unaware of anything like this?

Seek and you shall find, look at the shape of the out of focus highlight areas. If you don't see this in your own pictures then certainly you should find examples on line

It'll be a personal taste thing. I may get used to the cats eye look but at the moment I'm leaning towards a more (to me) conventional look be it rounded or angular but not so cats eye.

PS.
Happy New Year! :D

I think you've done well :D beautiful pictures.

Hi peeps, I have a bit of a problem. I have the 6000, A7mk2 and the A7R2. My question is this, I'm really wanting a faster lens since I sold all my Canon gear and glass (didn't have the r2 then). I have the FE 16-35, 55 1.8, 70-200 G, 90mm G macro, and picked up a 60mm Sigma Art for the 6000.
On a recent wedding shoot I found myself wanting faster glass, funds won't allow me to buy more glass, so do I sell the 7mk2 to fund a 35mm 1.4 or go the Metabones and Canon route?

What would you do?

Hi all;

Been lurking here on this Sony thread for a while now, liking what I see. Without starting a debate, as a non Sony A7R shooter, which version is the one to go for..? Are all the Sony lenses compatible with different Sony bodies? I know nothing about this system. Thanks.

Regards;

Hi Pete,

All Sony fe lenses will work on the a6000, a7, a7ii, a7s, a7sii, a7r, a7rii. Sony a mount lenses are compatible via la-ea 3 or 4 adapters.

For me, the a7rii is the complete camera. High resolution. In body stabilisation. Decent autofocus. silent mode.large, bright evf.

As you have the 55mm f1.8 and are thinking of the 35mm f1.4 I assume you want a f1.x wider than the 55mm?

I think I'd go for the 35mm f1.4... a Canon lens + adapter may be cheaper (?) and I suppose you'll have the option of using the lens on a Canon body at some time but for simplicity and having less to worry about I think I'd go for the Sony mount option.

If you plan on using more canon mount lenses via metabones you could get the sigma art 35 1.4.
If not go for the Sony 35 1.4 fe mount. Will cost a little more than the first option.

Sigma art 35mm works flawlessly with metabones adaptor on a7ii and a7r ii trust me I own both now and they are great really glad I kept my canon items

So is the a7ii as fast as the a7rii to af with the metabones?

A question for anyone that owns the A7ii and the A7Rii.

Will I see a real world difference in landscape shots between these two camera bodies?

I generally use a tripod and hardly crop my images. The images will be printed (by Loxley not me) and it's unlikely I'll want prints larger than 36 x 24 (900 x 600mm ish).

I'm almost ready to invest my money into one of these bodies, along with a couple of lenses (Batis 25 and Sony 55) but I don't want to spend an extra £1000 if I don't have too.

Thanks in advance, David.

Warning... going off topic :D

After running cleaning cycles and changing only one ink cartridge I'm now sat looking at a set of good Epson R2880 prints that stand up to viewing under a magnifying glass :D

I can't speak for the different between the A7ii & A7rii (I only own the A7ii) but I can speak for the difference between a 24mp D750 and the 36mp D800, I think there is a discernible difference between those two and I can only imagine that an extra 6mp would make it an even larger difference, if you don't crop much then essentially you'd be getting a 42mp image v a 24mp image, its not double but its not far off.

Personally though for what your printing I think 24mp would be more than enough, and that extra £1000 can be put toward the lenses... also means when the A7rii drops in price you can pick one up and have a body for each lens!

Thanks for that Chris.

The best I have to go on (for now) is going through Flickr and looking at the Batis 25mm page, and then looking at the images I like. There seems to be just as many shot (that I like) with either camera.

I was thinking the same. Go for the A7 now and invest in lenses - then if I feel the need to go for the no doubt better all-round R version just wait for it to drop in price. Although I "think" the A72 with do what I want, I'd like to hear from others that have used the two bodies. An extra £1000 free would mean a Batis 85mm to complete what I'd like (focal wise), but I'd like more opinions and very much appreciate any advice.

I started with an a7. Liked it but switched to a7ii and then got a7rii and a6000. I've printed on canvas a shot taken on a7ii that's over a metre wide. It's plenty sharp enough. The autofocus on a7ii at the time wasn't up to much. So the a7rii ticked an additional box for me. The a7ii autofocus has now received an upgrade via firmware though. I'm half tempted to move on my a6000 and get a cheap a7.
An a7ii and Batis will please you I'm sure.

Look at it this way. The A7ii is 6000 x 4000. Using 300dpi you can print un-cropped pictures up to 20" x 13". The A7R2 is 7952 x 5304 which gives 26" x 17". This is just a guide and of course its down to other things like the image itself, how far away you are viewing the image, what you print it on eg canvas is expected to look different to a high gloss paper. I dont own the A7ii but I do the A7R2 and I have A3 prints that are stunning. I also though have A3 prints from a 5D3 which are also stunning and it is only 5670 x 3840. I haven't though tried to print as large as you suggest (yet).

This may not help but hopefully gives you guidance as to where to look for some answers. The answer is based on what you want to get out of your photography.. Large prints that can stand up to close scrutiny or ones that will hang on a wall that you don't want to pixel peep on but will be perfectly happy with. You could try sending an image of each size to be printed at the largest size you want and see which you prefer.

a cheaper option is the sigma merrils if they fit your needs, (30mp of normal bayer camera equivilent, with near perfect glass for sharpness) or the a7 mk1

Thanks for the reply Ian, stupidly I hadn't worked out the maximum print size at 300ppi.

To get a better idea I'm going to trawl a few local art galleries today and try to get a little info on what camera was used in some of the images where I can. Hopefully this will help a little.

I'll also take your advice and have a few larger images printed at less than native so I can see with my own images how they look.

It may just be that I have low standards but prints usually look better than I thought they would. I have A3 prints from my old 35mm SLR's taken with relatively crappy by todays standards lenses and they look lovely as do the A3 prints from my 8mp 20D files and whilst having a rummage around the other day I found an A4 print I forgot I'd made, it was taken with a Medion 85173 which is as crappy a thing as you could find, it's a 1.18mb file and it looks... lovely even when I took a magnifying glass to it.

Unless you want meters wide gallery quality to look at under a microscope I wouldn't worry about printing files from any A7 series camera, I'm pretty sure that even the 12mp A7s is capable of lovely large prints too.

Just my 2p :D

Thanks Alan.

To be honest I think most prints will be within the 300ppi constraints of the A7ii anyway so I don't think it will be an issue. Besides, in the past when I've been shooting a landscape that I think I'll want large I've just stitched a few files together with no issues (no idea why I didn't think of this earlier). I think I've made my mind up to go with the A7ii. Thanks all.

I have two Di700A and Air 1's but haven't tried off camera HSS.
On first impressions they seem a good solid flash, I may get a couple of Nissan PS8 external PSU's too :)
When I get a moment I will try out HSS. :)

the more i see the more i want an a7rii.........
I am holding out for the MK III bodies..... but looking to start doing photography as a part-time living so may have to pull the trigger on the RII :)

both the a7r ii and a7ii are awersome I'm well happy I need the flashes then I'm all set for what I need ( I kept a 5ds and a 6d canon with all my lenses :-))

Well mine doesn't fire only with a cheap trigger if that helps

Any flash should fire in manual mode, my SB900's worked fine on my A7R and A7R2, but with the right triggers.

Whatever you read, the centre pin on the Sony cameras does not line up properly with non-sony/minolta flashes, resulting in the flash not always triggering.

I have seen somewhere that you can mod the standard cheap triggers by filing away the front of the trigger so that the pins line up (and contrary to advice elsewhere, it is more than the thickness of paint!).

Thanks for that - I wonder if it would be best to buy a small Sony flash ( or a Sony E fit Metz) and fit that to the camera shoe and use it to fire my Canon flash off camera but as a slave flash.
Any comment ?
James

Better to buy either a Nissin Di700 Air (remote TTL Trigger), or a Phottix Mitros+ and Odin Trigger.

Either will give you ttl flash if you want it, and all fit correctly into the Sony Multi-interface shoe, and all would trigger your canon flashes (if they have optical slave option), so would cover all options for you.
