The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Last night, very late, I took the 35mm f2.8 which has been on my camera since I got it off and replaced it with my Novoflex adapter and Minolta Rokkor 85mm f2 (I nearly went for the Minolta 50mm f1.2) for a late night ramble. All the shots were at f2 and 25,600 until we got home and it dropped to a less extreme 3200/6400. I'm not going to post any as it's only family stuff but I thought I would share the following...

- Peaking gave good accuracy at f2 in a situation in which I don't believe that any camera I've had before would auto focus.
- After processing the results are good enough for screen viewing and would no doubt make good small prints too.
- This is the best camera I've ever had.

I had a Minolta 50mm 1.7 on an A6000 I had a year or so ago. I had loads of fun and some interesting images with unique bokeh. Shame I sold it because as you say the peaking tool is very effective. Why not post some test images of the 85?
 
i gave up on epson printers already, and most printers

my local camera shop has a great printer and then its someone elses headache :)

I have posted pictures taken with just about all of my manual lenses but as I don't store pictures by camera or lens type and just store them by place or event (I folders called something like "York" or "Denise's party" it's difficult for me to remember what kit I used especially as there's no lens info in the exif :D Next time I use an old lens I'll post some shots before they get filed away.

I've had a couple of Minolta 50mm f1.7's but now just have a f1.4 and f1.2. I have to say that IMO the f1.7 is the smart buy as they're cheaper and often a little more compact and lighter. For quite a while I used a Minolta f1.7 on MFT so that's x2 crop and have quite a few pictures I really like :D

One of the big attractions of CSC's for me is the ease of use with old manual lenses. I did use some Zuiko lenses on my 5D but it's a much easier and more enjoyable experience with a CSC IMO.

Very wise.

The ability to process and print at home was what pushed me to go digital but my printing has dwindled to next to nothing. I'm always happy to be asked for prints rather than to email a 2000 pixel wide shot over so I suppose I'll persist once I've calmed down :D

All things considered it's probably cheaper to leave printing to the professionals.

Hope so, for me Sonys not quite there yet as my main camera so Ill keep my D750, however, would be nice to use my Nikon lenses on a secondary body. I already have the A7 and 55 but would like a 'dual purpose' mount camera.

I had to sell all my nikon lenses to fund the a7rii switch. I do miss my Nikon at times and would love to be able to run two systems (I won't buy a canon body) dual purpose, as you say.

I also sold up all my Nikon gear in prep but changed my mind at the last minute after getting over the hype/GAS. Id like to add the A7rii but as you say, 2 top end systems cost loads!
 
Jus got mine and learning the system and menus after using Nikon for ages! One thing I have noticed is when you preview an image and click the zoom button there is a very noticeable couple of second delay, anyone else experience this?

Also when turning the camera on and off you can feel quite a notable vibration inside the camera, it isn't the cleaning system as that vibrates violently! Also noticed when turning the camera on the display and evf takes a few seconds to adjust and starts of dark and adjusts after 5 seconds or so to a nice bright image.


This all normal amongst all you guys?
 
Yes there is a lag in preview 1:1 - its due to the huge file sizes. A trade off of having such a high megapixel count (A7Rii). Its a trade off I can live with because most of my selection happens in Lightroom.

Quick snap of the ground - again - using the articulating screen which is alien to a DSLR (non D750) user!

Yes the zoom delay is normal, but IMO undesirable the C3 button just has a + sign, I don't see the point in zooming straight to 1:1 (others may appreciate it) but invariably I am always immediately zooming out straight away. Given the size of the image the C3 button could perhaps have been a progressive zoom.
As for the vibration when switching On/Off I can only guess this is the IBIS but someone else may have a better idea (have to say had to put my ear to the camera and hear the lens motor start up too) I guess this is it ready to go shoot type of noise ;-)

The only thing I use 1:1 for is to see if I nailed focus.

the a77 and above have more articulation, then new Pentax ff even more I think..., a mount users are pretty indifferent to e mount screens xD
 
I've received a neewer mactop mt-300am 900 watt off camera light setup. Working nicely with 3 lights (300w each). I can only get my s***ter speed up to 200 without seeing the shutter coming down on the image.
Any ideas what I need to do in the menu to allow for high speed sync?

Do the lights support hss? How are you triggering?

Then the receiver connects directly to the light. No instructions were included in the box. I've just re-read the description and no mention of high speed sync...I assumed these kind of set-ups would support it.

Not all setups do, hss is pretty specialist for bigger kits. You're hitting the cameras max flash synch. If it had a leaf shutter you could go over that with any flash, otherwise lights and triggers need to support it.

Hss is found on most speedlight but with studio strobe. Not all have it
 
There's a filter pack included. Haven't got round to checking it out yet.
Actually getting some nice results at f5.6. Intruducing the second light now.
 
Well after using the A7ii for a couple of days up north I can honestly say I'm very pleased with it, the controls will take a little getting used to and I probably need to customise it a little more to my liking but its been a great bit of kit, I've had fun using it and looking through a few of the shots so far the IQ is very impressive, easily as good as my D750 would have done in similar conditions.

The Sony 24-70 actually surprised me as being not too bad but the distortion isn't really good enough for an £800 lens so its going to go back.

The standout for me was actually the Canon 17-40 that I used with the Metabones IV adaptor, I can't see how a native lens would have functioned any better, AF was brilliant for my needs, nicely balanced with the battery grip attached and (for an UWA) fantastic image quality, I also don't think I appreciated how much of a help full-time liveliew with peaking and focus magnification would be either!

Batteries seemed to last a little better than I expected with only one depleting fully and about 5% of the second one having taken around 450 shots I don't think thats too bad.

Just need to make a call on lenses now, I can't say many of the native ones excite me at present, will probably source my own 17-40 to cover landscaping and I might make do with a cheap 28-70 until the much rumoured new 24-70 gets announced, although given the performance of the Canon adaptor a Canon 24-70/24-105 is also an option given the good used prices and fact that the zooms I only really intend to use for more dedicated togging trips.

I've got some credit at WEX and seriously thinking about selling on the sued X100T I just bought given than the A7ii is relatively small in itself, will probably look to add a couple of primes for more mobile days, likely a 35 or 50/55 although the Loxia MF lenses actually attract me more for that, I liked the Loxia 35 I tried before but struggled a little with focusing, given time I'm sure I'd be fine with that.
In a way I'm glad the 17-40 performed as it did..... that new 21mm Loxia was quite tempting as a wide angle!!!!

Exactly, why would you say the only way to reduce power is to use a smaller aperture :rolleyes:

He can shoot at lower power, use modifiers, filters, etc etc etc. He doesn't have to have HSS to use a fast lens, I do it all the time.

If the updated firmware on the metabones is a good as people are saying, perhaps get the canon mount tamron 24-70. One of my favourite lenses back in my Nikon days.
As for native glass, I love the Sony zeiss 55 1.8.
 
One thing I'm struggling with using the off camera lighting is the live view is not taking into account what the lights are going to do to the exposure. So it's dark and hard to see what I'm focusing on.

Turn live view exposure OFF, the screen and EVF will stay bright. The flashes wont account for your exposures real time in the EVF, the camera can only account for current lighting conditions. Have you done much OCF work in the past?

Only tried it with one flash off camera a few times when shooting with Nikon.
