Funny you say that, because Sony's support of older phones is one of the best in the industry. The Z5 has been out for a while, but my old Z2 is still actively supported and will soon be updated to the latest version of Android. Most manufacturers don't offer anything like that level of support for older devices (and many not even for current ones!)
 
Not sure that if Sony brings out a new model body they make the old model obsolete many who bought Canon or Nikon have camera bodies that aren't new models

The Sony has many lens adapters and offers old customers the chance of using legacy glass


If you mean firmware Canon soon stops updates for older models and hardware updates are so rare I don't recall ever on my cameras being offered anything from the manufacturer

I do like you in your line of business offer at least 17 years back up even cars and boilers struggle at that point guess that's why we all are consumers

I know what you're saying but I'm sure Sony support their products... in that they comply with the various bits of legislation and make parts and fix faulty kit for the required number of years after production stops... other than that they may well not do as much as we'd like.
 
I have a feeling that things will start to slow down now that the ii models have been released.

Yeah, not bad so far, sometimes it beeped without locking but the maker is apparently tweaking, hopefully it works with Nikon fit and not just AF-S lenses when the final product arrives. I dont really want to get rid of Nikon fit lenses / double up and buy into Canon when I mainly use Nikon.

Actually I hope not. I hope they carry on and push forward with new chips and possibly back side illuminated throughout the range and better focus performance too. They could also make a few changes to the ergonomics such as a dedicated focus point movement joystick thingy... and I'm sure we can think of other things.

I do realise the restrictions and limitations of my first generation A7 but given those it still does pretty much what I want but it might be nice to get a significantly better camera in a couple of years or so for me because I can :D and for others because they'll need the improvements.
 
I can safely say that the A7Rii ticks nearly all my boxes, with the portability factor improving my photography exponentially due to me always having it with me. Something I couldn't do with the D750. Yes, coming from a DLSR with dedicated buttons for every possible function was a learning curve - mainly the focus point joystick - which has been solved for me with setting up custom options.

However if they do decide to upgrade every year with 'significant' improvements then I advocate it and will upgrade because I have GAS! If it's for very minor improvements just to try and generate extra replacement revenue (like Apple/Samsung) then I'm out!

As what I wanted was a smallish camera and a couple / a few smallish primes the A7 is pretty much perfect for me and my only real problem is having time to use it. Since I came back from holiday in August I've had just half a day to myself and that was because I had the excuse of taking my car in for an MoT. My next big break will possibly be in April but I will probably get another half a day to wonder off with my camera when I take my other car in for a service and MoT in January.

That's the number one for me. If the A7Rii had instant focus point movement I'd upgrade but for now I'll stick with The A7R.

Don't see what the issue is. I press the centre button and adjust the FP by pressing the rotary dial in the direction I want it to move. I wouldn't class this as a reason to invest hundreds to a thousand pounds to upgrade. I'd be looking things like Auto Focus speed and inbuilt IS instead.

Different strokes... Faster AF and stabilisation would be nice but don't bother me much for what I shoot. The two-part process for moving the AF is an annoyance to me.

And, it isn't that I would upgrade purely for that feature but not having it stops me upgrading despite the other improvements.

I know what you mean, Sony have already increased both the size and weight from the original A7 bodies albeit for the advantage of 5-axis IBIS :)

Don't think I can do that with my A7 but I'll take another look.

At the mo I press a custom button which calls up the focus options, I then press the centre button and the focus point is then ready to be moved so for me it's a two button press. I tend to reposition the focus point rather than focus and recompose so I do this quite a lot, actually more often than not and although a dedicated one touch control would be nice I don't find my current set up too much of a problem, it only takes a second.

I'll check my settings but I have customised the centre button to select either focus point or focus area mode. Press rotary dial to select point or slide it to select mode. I think it's ace.

My A7R is set up the same way. Much better than the out-of-the-box set up. Still rather have a dedicated joystick a la Canon.
 
Just ordered some umbrella/soft box kits, stands. brackets and sandbag weights...... :rolleyes: going to hold out until the new year and pull the trigger on two Nissin Di700A flash guns and the Air 1 Commander :D

Park Camera's are offering 10% off the Batis lenses, brings the Batis 85mm down to £818 ;)
 
My 2016 wish list as follows :-

A7R II or A7/R III
Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8
Zeiss Batis 25mm f2.0
Nissin Di700A Flash & Command Air 1
Nissin Di700A Flash
Nissin PS8 External Flash Battery Pack

Will also keep a eye on upcoming FE lenses.

You can probably tell I suffer from GAS :D:)
 
A Sony 85mm f1.8 and a more compact 35mm f1.8 something like the bulk of the f2.8 or not too much more might get my interest otherwise I'm not too bothered :D

When going to the checkout the code ZEISS-10-OFF works for me. :)

I don't think many places have any of the Batis lenses in stock as the demand has far exceeded supply to the point Zeiss has expanded its production. :eek:
 
Well I'm now a full member of the A7 club, received an A7ii for Christmas and this will be my main camera from now on after returning a faulty D810 I had bought.
Came with the 24-70 f4 and the Metabones Mark 4 Canon Adaptor (special offer as I don't have any Canon glass), I was probably just going to sell on the Canon adaptor to someone who can make better use of it but I did half wonder if there might be some decent Canon options lens wise rather than opting for more expensive native glass for certain purposes (Mainly an UWA).

I ordered a Meike Grip, a Couple of Ex-Pro Batteries and a Wall Charger so should be good to go!
 
Not sure what the issue is with the focus controls. Custom set the centre button. So you press it once and then move the focus point around. Must take less than a 3rd of a second longer than having a dedicated button as you do on dslr.

Just a case a training your brain to press it once before trying to move the focus point.

Centre Button = Focus Settings

This gives you points when each direction is pressed and focus settings when dial is rotated.

Note if you press C4/trash can it resets the point to the middle.

Not managed to get out with it yet! Handling wise I know its not as nice as a Fuji but with the grip its actually ok, and the few shots I've taken indoors tell me that the IQ is plenty good, need to get out today, borrowed a friends Canon 17-40L to try with the adaptor to see how good the AF actually is.
 
The adapters and the improving performance of the newer bodies with Canon and other lenses makes me wonder if I did the right thing selling all my Canon fit lenses.

So far i only have the 17-40 L, and with the recent firmware updates from Metabones, the AF seems as fast as on a native sony lens -)

I don't suppose I regret it too much really as I've had the A7 for 2 years now and I'd have missed out on having it for that time if I'd waited. I could have just put the Canon kit in a drawer though... Oh Shucks! :D

I've never really had any Canon glass (aside from some FD glass on an EM5 years ago) but if it works AF wise then its certainly a compelling, better value option than some of the native Sony glass, especially as so far many of the lenses have been a bit suspect quality wise.
