The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Thinking about what SDXC memory card to get that will give Class 10 for stills and up to XAVC S UHS Speed Class 3 for recording in 100 Mbps (though the video will be for down the line)

Saw this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-1...1253&sr=8-2&keywords=128+GB+UHS+Speed+Class+3

Wonder what card(s) the panel will be considering / and any good deals?
May be better to get more than one (smaller) baskets to keep the eggs in - what do you think?
Jamie

i think 64gb is now the best size/cost ratio, on the fast cards atleast

mymemory.co.uk have several fast 64gb cards at £25quid, and remmber top cash back ;)

i think the lexar 1000x 150mbps card is the one most tempting to me, does atleast 75mbps write speed

I was hoping tbe price might surprise us in a good way... anyone pleased with the price?

A few pages back people were complaining that some of us were being a little too ostentatious and to continue in that vein at least the price will keep the riff raff out :D Me included :D

PS. I suppose it's cheap compared to the Canon.

No I find it pricey it had crossed my mind for moving my A77 mkii and go full frame the specs look good though the price is almost double the A7 mkii

Well yes I suppose that in isolation it does seem pricey but at the moment there isn't a lot to compare it to and compared to the Canon I suppose it's a positive bargain.

I haven't decided if I'll get one or not but one thing I do know is if I do get one it wont be in the first few months. Not at that price. Good luck to those who decide to be early adopters and the specs do look good and I'd like IBIS and the ability to shoot silently but for me these are wants rather than needs and my A7 isn't broken.

Drop your a7 on the floor and then buy an a7r2 hehe

Thankfully there's no one who'd actually nag me about buying a new camera but there's a little voice which says that spending that much on a mere camera is a touch excessive.

I can't remember how much I paid for my A7.

Anyway, I'll wait for your review first :D

How well do you find the A7 fits the hand I am concerned they are a bit small the A99 is still available though does not compare for specs.

I would be fibbing if I never said I do like what I see, I did have the Canon 5D mkiii for me I would also need too buy new glass

I like my A7. A couple of complaints seem to be the size of the grip (it's small) and the position of the shutter button but neither of these things bother me. I suppose I'm average size and not exactly child sized and I have no problems pressing the buttons, I do prefer smaller cameras as I find they attract less attention.

I sold my 5D and lenses and initially only used old manual lenses with my A7. I bought the kit lens but so far I haven't used it outside of the house and garden. It seems to be a nice lens but I mostly use primes, I just got it because I thought it'd be a nice lens to have for occasional use. I've now added the 55mm f1.8 and 35mm f2.8 and I think they're both excellent.

If you're main concern is handling maybe you should try before you buy. If where you live is like where I live you probably wont find one locally and will need to trek to a dealer in a city. I bought my A7 without handling one and luckily I have no real regrets and just a couple of niggles, my main one being that the camera doesn't have a screen / EVF toggle switch like my MFT cameras have and of course the screen is tilting and not fully articulated.

On the positive site the size is nice, the auto ISO in all modes including manual is wonderful and so is the ability to dial in compensation in manual mode, and the image quality is beyond anything I've owned or used before.

if you have lots of a mount glass you could wait for a99ii or better adapters

At first i found the A7 a bit small to hold but you soon adapt like with all things. I absolutely adore my A7R hands down the best camera/system ive used. The new Mk2 doesn't even slightly tempt me at all it adds nothing of use to me well maybe the bump in resolution but im happy with 36MP for now.

How do you find autofocus on the A7r mk! then i thought they were classed as slow

Would you have a lens recommendation for about 16 - 18mm and say 50-80mmplease

i have a tamron 70-200mm with the screw focus system would that work on the A7 and if so would it be better keeping or selling and buying an E specific lens

I own the Lee system with the 100 8 150mm system would that be suitable for the A7 or would that have to go as well

I luv cameras me ;)

Interesting Sony pricing....

A7ii + 28-70 = £1639
A7ii = £1244
------------------
£395 for 28-70

A7 + 28-70 = £999
A7 = £799
------------------
£200 for 28-70

28-70 retail = £275

Me thinks A7ii users are getting screwed.

The retailers have to slash older kit prices to shift their older stock, that's always going to happen.
Because of that there are always going to be apparent bargains on included kit lenses.

That doesnt explain why the A7ii bundle lens is £120 MORE than the retail packaged lens though, does it?

Thanks Rob

Its been fine for me, slow if your trying to use it as a fast action camera but that's not really what the R is for.

It does the A7mk2 kit is in demand compared to the camera only, so the price goes up.

My mix is 50% landscape 30 architecture 20% fast I.e dogs motor sport

I print max A3+ and Pano 13'' by 36''

How would you think the A7 vs A7R would best work for me if at all, guess is I would go mk2 for A7 but mk1 for A7R though the mk 2 sounds darn good just price forecast is high

Rubbish, if anything a kit lens is cheaper when its part of a bundle!

Would you like to show me a link to prove that bit of information?

Calm down. How is it rubbish anything is only worth what people are willing to pay if demand goes up the price can too, hence when its been out for a while and the demand tapers off the price will come down.
As for the link, have you heard of Google?

Edit: I thought i would do it for you anyway.

How do you figure that explains the kit costing much more than a separate body and retail boxed lens? Thanks for the link, that clearly shows me the Sony sales figures to back up your claim. FACT: RRP wise kits are always cheaper than separate items, except in Sonys world.

It does the A7mk2 kit is in demand compared to the camera only, so the price goes up.

Price difference on Panamoz between body only and kit is only £130 for the Mark II!

UK customers just being ripped off as usual :p

Never ever never never ever...... ever never never ever see that do we?

Do you think that the A99 will be replaced the small format does seem to be winning the race now on full frame maybe due to weight

the "race" is quite one sided as Sony has a massive hard on for small and lighter but FF.... But if you want fast glass then that small body is abit :/, and the fe glass is expensive, and actually most lenses don't beat the dslr lenses in size and weight, and part of the size and weight difference is fancy rear screen, extra ports and maybe buttons (ive not counted).

So

Thank you bit of sanity for me in your post just been had a hold of the old A7 don't really think its for me

Bit small in the hand
The kit lens is about the weight of the DT 16-50 any way
But the real deal breaker for me is the rear lcd not turning over, even though i use a screen protector i still like turning it over

So guys thank you i may look more at the A99 though i have a feeling its a bit less advanced than the A77 MKii

Again thanks folks

Allan

I think people looking solely at a system for being smaller or lighter are looking in the wrong place. To me the camera is as big as it needs to be as a mirrorless full frame. If you want small and light its the NEX range or micro 4/3rds.

It makes me think when SLRs were around these weren't considered too small to hold so why all of a sudden is the A7 range, it was only with DSLRs they grew larger.

I can tell you why for me, my hands are arthritic to a point but I get a lot of carpal tunnel as well so if I try get my fingers into places they don't wish to go it spoils the fun. I for a while ran light weight with the Canon G12 and found it fiddly my other concern is the lens mount as my camera hangs so when I saw one it does not look as safe as the A mount.

Oddly I have been considering if I could switch more for tripod use that would resolve certain ergonomic issues though I still don't like the rear facing LCD

I did for a while when much younger have SLR though of course dexterity and strength did not present issues as they do today.

I have been looking into the A99 and I don't think I would like that it's more like a Canon 5D2 than a 5D3 in terms of features.

I have all my adult life loved gadgets I truly love trying new kit I guess the mirrorless looks good just not sure I could physically live with it and in case anyone asks I only ever run one camera body at a time

Darn getting older and chronic issues

Allan

Always the option of using a grip if you really fancy giving an A7 ago. I had doubts about the mount but its survived two drops on me so far one with a 70-200 canon lens attached that destroyed the lens but the mount was fine. Another time with a 100mm lens attatched and again fine. Considering how my gear takes a beating the camera is standing up very well.

Hi Rob

Are you using the A7 on a tripod or maybe Canon lens with IS built in I ask as this model does not have ibis as far as I can see, clearly you can use faster shutter speed instead of IS

How high do you accept ISO on your camera thinking inside castles with no IS on my 5D3 6400 / 12800 was required on occasion with a 17-40mm F4 and no IS

Cheers

Allan

It's very rare i use a tripod, the canon lens are old ones no IS, just hand hold. I try to stay at 16000 or below but will go higher if i need to, if i do i nearly always downsample the images to a lower resolution and this deals with the extra noise well. If i know its going to be low light i always try and stick to wide angle lenses then i can go to a lower shutter speed.

the older slrs tended to have lighter lenses, and they didn't have the rear screen and extra buttons and outputs, really you could shrink down the dslr mount cameras to be like the qx, but with a extra 20mm ish flange distance.

the sal28 to whatever kit zoom lens for the a99 is actually quite light, but Sam af motor...

I don't now if you're still looking at the A7 but just in case you are...

I can't really recommend lenses other than comment on the ones I have...

28-70mm kit lens... Seems to be well made and a perfectly adequate general purpose kit lens.
35mm f2.8... Lovely! It's not great in very low light (but I wonder how many of us need AF in near total darkness) and it'd be even nicer of it was f1.8 but other than those gripes... great.
55mm f1.8... Lovely! Very sharp and embarrasses my old film era lenses.

I have Minolta Rokkor, Olympus Zuiko and Canon FD lenses which I use via Novoflex adapters. All of the lenses are perfectly useable but don't really compare with modern lenses if you want to pixel peep. They tend to be good in the centre but less so as you head towards the edges. Of the lenses I have I'd say that the Minolta's are generally the best with the 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f2 beating the Olympus and Canon FD options for sharpness and having fewer nasties such as fringing.

PS. Filter systems... all that matters (AFAIK) is how you mount them to the lens and you can get just about any step up ring you desire so I shouldn't have thought you'd need to bin anything.

And to butt in on your question to Rob on ISO. I use any and all settings up to and including 25,600 and I'd say that the higher settings are perfectly useable for on screen and even print use. I posted some shots taken at dusk on the pier a few pages back, some with high ISO's.

Going slightly off topic here...

I read a piece on a blog some time ago and it stuck in my head and a link to it got posted recently so I grabbed it and thought I'd share it here...

http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2010/05/letter-to-george.html

That path has been my life... but maybe I'm settling for the gear I have now. The 35mm f2.8 has been on my camera since I got it and the 55mm is ready should it be needed. I still haven't used the kit lens. I don't use my 85 and 135mm lenses all that much so maybe it's not worth buying AF lenses and the manual ones will stay... and my 50mm macro seems to stay on my Panasonic G1 most of the time so maybe I don't need a 100mm macro for my A7.

Yup.

All I've wanted is digital cameras to replace the 35mm compacts, RF's and SLR's I used to use. Until the A7 series there wasn't a SLR replacement as DSLR's are big fat blimps although MFT gets close and will probably do for most occasions but if you want 35mm in digital with AF and in a small form then what other choice Is there?

Until tonight, I was set on moving from my 5 year old Canon 500D to a 6D. I already have a couple of Sigma lenses (a 50mm 1.4), so taking them with me.

By chance I stumbled across a photo on Flickr using an A7ii, and I got lost in reviews/comparisons.

Has anyone moved from a similar camera to an A7/A7ii? Or even from a 5/6D?

5D (Mk1) to A7 with a bunch of Canon FD, Olympus OM and Zeiss C/Y lenses I already had.

No regrets whatsoever.

I could miss my 70-200 f/2.8L. It was a lovely lens, but I don't miss the weight.
