So why are you still in the UK then? Go travel then lol.

Anyways some of us can afford both. I am traveling to 4 Other places abroad by the end of August and Still have change for a 3k body.
 
I'm confused? I haven't taken a swipe at anyone with regards to buying a camera, that's none of my business.

My comment was aimed at you ridiculing someone who appears to have a family and prefers to spend money on them with a condescending post.

Good luck to you if you need to swap your kit weekly to be happy but everyone has their own priorities.

If you head on over to one of the technical review sites and look at some graphs and charts I'm pretty sure that all of your questions on resolution and sharpness can be answered. I posted a link earlier to a little comparison test between a Merrill and some top end Nikon or other, maybe that will help too.

There's no denying that the Sigma is a nice camera but it's a bit niche and compared to a top end 35mm/FFand lens IMVHO and according to a couple of reviews I've seen the Sigma's can't quite compete once you get into the larger print sizes and ISO's and/or pixel peep. For some uses and some people the Merrill will be overkill image quality wise but If you want to look for finite differences between them and 35mm/FF they'll be there once you push the envelope of what the gear can do and the same is no doubt true if you look at MFT v APS-C, APS-C v 35mm FF or 35mm FF v summot bigger.

Personally I like to have two little systems so I have MFT and A7 and both have their plus points but I wont kid myself that MFT is capable of the same ultimate image quality that the A7 is capable of if I really push the limits of what the kit can do and the same is true for Merrill v the best FF set ups, the Sigma is just not capable of matching the best 35mm equivalent setups once you push the limits of ISO or print size.

And that's without considering if you/we/someone wants an interchangeable lens system or a fixed lens camera, a built in EVF, an add on EVF or just the rear screen and if the performance of the camera will allow the user to get the shot.

The Merrill cameras are very nice and capable of good results but at the risk of repeating myself I personally just don't see them as A7 series competitors.

Travelling is one thing but being able to take photographs while doing it is another. Well done you if you have the time and opportunity to shoot :D A few years ago I was in Kazakhstan and got invited on a fishing trip on the Ili river. It took about 8 hours to get there in a Landcruiser and the countryside and villages we passed through would have been great to shoot but I just didn't get the opportunity. I'd love to do that trip again but take a couple of days to get there shooting along the way. I've been to Kazakhstan three times and each time I would have loved to get out by myself with my camera but the world just got in the way. I'm going to Thailand again in August but again there'll be precious little chance to take pictures.

I retired at 49 and I'm now 54 and since retiring I've been on some great trips but usually there isn't the opportunity to take time out to take pictures. Will be taking my A7 and 55mm to Thailand, just in case :D

To me dropping £2.6k on a camera really isn't that big a deal if I can take a few pictures that'll give me pleasure when looking at them a couple of years later and if helping me to remember a trip of a lifetime :D

At 54 I would be looking more towards a day to day basis rather than a few years :)

Where did it say he had a family and will spend it on them? He said he rather spends it on holidays. Taken swipe on all who are looking to buy the a7r2 basically implying we should not waste so much money on a camera and spend it on something else.

That's insulting and so I replied in a similar manner. If he can't take it. Then don't start it
 
Does this really have to continue? I can't speak for N0chex but I haven't questioned anyone buying a camera, I buy enough myself. My issue was the arrogance of your reply bragging about going abroad 4 more times before August yet still having £3k 'change' left to pick up an A7Rii..

"3 or 4 family holidays" doesn't sound like he's doing 18-30's or backpacking around Indonesia.

Anyway, as I said above, nobody can tell anyone what they should or shouldn't buy with their own money. That doesn't mean there needs to be a willy-waving competition to decide who's the richest.

Yes, this is a gear thread but only a total FS would begrudge a few non A7 hardware posts now and again.

Anyway, I retired at 49 with more money than I'll ever spend despite the cars, women, wine, holidays abroad and gadgets so if I can't brag about my wealth and being able to afford £3k camera what use is the internet?

No. It doesn't need to continue.

I've seen no serious willy waving (I've posted in fun and only in fun) and if we can't all take it in fun maybe it's best to just get back to the gear.. but personal I don't see a great need to keep talking about Merrills as IMVHO they're just too different to A7's to be all that relevant to this thread.

I do agree about the Merrills. We all generally like our own kit and could probably bore anyone about them but I think there's a limit where one camera really can't be directly compared to another because it's a different solution.

it had to continue in order for teh rest here to understand my response. i dislike people who moan about people that can spend the funds on something like the bloke clearly has.

it goes both ways, yoi should not willy wally and you should not hate on people who can buy things as the person suggested.

In another thread a guy says he spent 40K on Leica kit. I'd never spend that much on a camera but maybe he'd never buy the cars I've had. To each his own. We'll meet all sorts and there's no need for envy or competition and what matters in the journey we are each on, grasshopper...

off topic a bit but i tried the 5ds in bnh in new york and used my cf card. i am going to see how good or bad the dr is and what 50mp can really do.

note that the cf card could only buffer up to 3-4 shots before the camera would not take anymore pics.

will we see a slow buffer speed when shooting in burst mode on the a7r2?
 
meh, Merrills offer great value, you need a a7r, d800 d810, canon 50mp? To better there output, and u need to pair those cameras with great lenses.

plus it amused me to have a little camera that beat canon stuff, just everything they had :D

do wish the dp1 was 24mm ish and dp3 90mm equivalent
and a fisheye one

The Merrills are just horrible to shoot with, almost everything bar the IQ is wrong with them and the pain doesn't end when you press the shutter button because then you need to process them in the crap Sigma software. D800 etc are in another league of usability although the IQ of the Sigma holds up well.
 
I did miss the battery life on my Canon 1D mk4 and when I got the Merrill I thought I had a faulty one as it switched off after 20 pictures :)
 
As in one review I watched (maybe the one I posted in this thread...) I think that you have to view batteries like rolls of film... Ooops! I've shot 20 frames, time to change the battery.

I do see the appeal and I do like quirky but I've never owned a camera that needs to be used in the way I think that you have to use a Merrill to get the best out of it and I can't see myself wanting a camera like that. Good luck to those who do. Choice is good :D
 
Why are Merrill owners coming and trolling on an A7 thread? There was not a single word said for/against Merrills until someone starting telling everyone how amazing their DPM was. Surely if you're happy with your cameras you just go out and use it rather than coming online to defend your choice of kit ;)

Also, this is Talk Equipment, not Talk Personal Finance, it's not for you to judge where people spend their money! :stop: Let's go back to drooling over cameras instead of talking value for money.

Personally I don't have too much of an issue with people butting in as long as it's all in good fun, and it seems to be :D

Anyway...

It would be nice to see the street price come in below £2,600 and to see it drop a little over coming months but I suppose a lot could depend upon demand and I think that demand could be quite high so that may well keep the price a little higher too.

Been looking at prices of various kit in the far east but unfortunately most of it seems to be coming out more expensive than in the UK, which is interesting, but I think it's very product dependent so maybe the importers could offer a saving for UK buyers. Time will tell :D

i enjoy using mine, they just fit me

on the a7r2, im expecting it to match the 5ds on sharpness/resolution, and kick it in the balls with dynamic range and grain :)

And if the af can perform as well as native Sony lenses on Canon lenses then canon are on trouble. Why get a 5ds when u can buy a a7r2 cheaper and better iq and features?
