The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Well I got a refund on the broken A7 but I won't be rushing to give Dixons/Currys any money again...

b****r that's bad.

I've pretty much given up complaining as what's the point when no one in retail seems to give a flying? IMVHO even half way reasonable service isn't the norm these days, it's a rarity.

Quick question. When shooting in manual mode. How come af doesn't work? It only works on appature or shutter mode. What am I missing?

Not sure I completely understand... but you should be able to use AF or manual focus in any exposure mode.

If you've got an AF lens fitted it should AF in manual exposure mode unless you've selected MF on the camera.

Yea last night I couldn't use af from manual exposure mode. Will double check today. Still getting use to this camera

The adapters are not cheap, and appear to be sooo slow on focussing....see the video a few posts back.

Yes, I told you they were slow long before the video posts. You said you can't change aperture, I said you can and told you how.

Sorry, I've now read your post properly.

I think, on balance, I will hold off for the moment, and see what the 5D Mark4 brings. In the meantime, I will find my nearest dealer, and try out the A7 with the 55mm F1.8
Thanks for all your help.

(SR4) Sony A7rII is coming:

Over the weekends I got more confirmations from one source that indeed the Sony A7rII is the next FF camera to be launched by Sony. There is yet no exact launch date I can share but the release really appears to be imminent. One anonymous source also shared some A7rII tidbits (take that as SR3):

– It has the same A7r 36 megapixel sensor
– Improved high ISO (thanks to the improved processor)
– Faster autofocusing
– 5 axis stabilization (exactly the same system used by the A7II).
– A7II alike body size
– Silent shutter mode (at last!)

Ahh I see ok cool.

Like this… the Sony graph also doesnt include the £100 off as posted recently, could be a blip but I think thats going to become the new RRP soon.

    - Adds the "Focus hold button" function
  • Reduces start-up time:
    - The start-up time has been reduced in cases when the camera is switched on immediately after being switched off
  • Improves image quality
  • Provides support for additional PlayMemories Camera Apps and additional features for previously supported apps:
    - Supports the "Liveview Grading" and "Smooth Reflection" applications
    - Supports the smooth automatic exposure feature in the "Time-lapse" application ver. 2.00 and later

:)

Still no ability to assign back screen off / on toggle to a custom button.

I don't think Sony is going to take a leaf out of Fuji's book and proactively invest more time and money into big improvements in the firmware to add functionality etc.
They will just do this kind of work in newer / replacement models.
It is a real shame as Fuji seem to listen to their end-users and implement new features / firmware update etc

I wouldn't think that adding this function would be a big investment in time or money as it's surely just a line of code in the firmware but maybe I'm the only one who's annoyed by it.

Steve Huff on the A7II...

"I will go ahead and say it…I have been reviewing cameras for 7 years. This Sony A7II is the most versatile, fantastic, useful and all around best priced for what you get camera I have ever reviewed. Bam! I also feel that the review image samples here are among the best quality I have put in ANY of my reviews in those 7 years."

Read it here...

I wonder if he'll be equally gushing when he tests the A7rII, assuming it comes.

I think he will be gushing (lol), he always says that his latest camera is better than the last. Has nothing to do with promoting a product though.

Thanks but I think that's off the list of possible toys to buy now.

I used to see it as a MFT alternative but because of what I see as the limitation for manual intervention I now see it as a slightly worse option than my LX5 and that's a camera I hardly use. So for me the LX100 has gone from a potential replacement for all of my MFT gear to something I can't see myself buying. Good luck to those who do though but with the way Panny have made it its not for me.

I don't think that's quite fair because in the past he's clearly said that he's not interested in reviewing kit he doesn't like so maybe his reviews should be largely positive and he does occasionally get a bit... negative... Have you read what he said about the LX100?

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2015/01/26/my-panasonic-lx100-thoughts/

I think that rather than being dishonest in the quest for back handers he's just genuinely rather enthusiastic about kit that he likes.

Well I got a refund on the broken A7 but I won't be rushing to give Dixons/Currys any money again... based on advice from the Dixons Travel store I bought the camera from I was advised I could take it back to any Currys/PC World in the UK for an exchange or refund on the broken A7.... so I was working in Threadneedle Street on Monday, I nipped along the road to the Currys and explained that the camera was faulty on opening the box and that the Travel store had said I could bring it in..... he firstly said they didn't stock it so he couldn't exchange it so I asked for a refund as they specifically state that if its faulty within 21 days of purchase I can have either..... he refused to refund the money based saying he can't refund it as the box has been opened..... how the hell was I meant to know it was faulty before the seal was broken on the box????? It was clear that he just didn't want to refund it..... just about lost it with him (probably a symptom of no sleep and his idiot icy)

Ended up taking it back to Terminal 5 on my way home where they did refund it and to be fair to them apologised profusely for their High Street colleague's behaviour but not sure I'd buy from them again if they're going to be that difficult on something thats clearly dud!

Aw man, that's pretty rubbish mate. I've never had a bad experience at my local Currys - and i've actually had a good few deals from them! It's nice to go to a shop and be able to haggle a bit. So what's the plan now? I've equally had my own issues getting an A7 from Park Cameras, see here - https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/park-cameras-selling-open-box-items-as-new.583058/. But thanks to the earlier poster, i've purchased one from Amazon for £800. Now the quest continues for the 55mm 1.8!

But according to rumors,Fuji are going to start giving out less firmware update, they say no more for the 100s :(

It reads exactly the same as the previous update.

I noticed this also, I think the Sony US site guru has probably not got his/her information right.
This update is purely for the new up coming lenses I think.

Seems to be. Complete details:

  • Benefits and improvements:
    • Picture improvement for SEL24240, SEL28F20, SEL35F14Z and SEL90M28G lenses
    • Improved power ON time when PlayMemories Camera Application "Smart Remote Control" is used

Plan now I think is just to forget about a compact system and keep the D800 (or trade for a D750) I had taken my D800 & 24-70 with me and actually really enjoyed using it, I'm planning on picking up a couple of primes and might consider the 24-120 f4 to take on holiday instead of the 24-70.... but only one system for me just now.

Unless you see a real advantage in the A7 or some other CSC (I do :D) then a DSLR and some compact primes would make a lot of sense. Good luck with it and the A7III may be out next time you think of ditching the DSLR :D

Whoa I thought I messed up my a7s whilst upgrading the firmware. After I installed it through the software it wouldn't turn on. Took battery out etc and no joy so I hooked it back to my laptop and run the update software again and it worked!

I'll certainly keep an eye out, cost wise it doesn't make a lot of sense for me unless I can fully ditch the DSLR which I don't think I can yet
