The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Anyone used the voitglander 75mm F1.8 Heliar classic on either of these bodies? Wouldn't mind comparing the quality vs my M9.

My A7R has gone back for repair. The rear thumb wheel (the horizontal one) has gone doo-lally and operates without being touched, making shutter speed setting and scolling through pictures rather impossible. Annoying

I haven't noticed any light leeks, mind you i don't take many photos of my lens cap with the lens in a bag while the body is in bright light at ISO 25600, 30s.

I know what you are saying, but some people do take long exposures shots, and I can understand them being annoyed...

Agreed, its a lot of money to pay for a camera and if I were into long exposure Id be very annoyed. Cant wait to see how Sony fix this one, they arent known for their customer service/recalls/backup/updates.

I can't imagine it would affect (light leak) at typical ISO 100 long exposures but good that Sony have acknowledges problem, I suspect the only way to resolve is a camera replacement though!

I posted this a page back. Actual images. Certainly isnt an image of a lens cap Rob ;)

If that's the case, i can see Sony just applying some sealant to that gap. I have done a few 30 second exposures and don't have the issue though, i might try the daft lens cap one just out of curiosity maybe its a QC issue.

Nice, go down to screwfix, get some black sealant for your £1500 camera. Didnt your dial just break?

You would be surprised how much silicone sealant is in electronics. We use it all the time. Plus take the front apart and apply the silicone internally and you wouldn't even know it was there.

This is a camera mount thats meant to withstand a lot of force, drops, long lenses etc. The mount should be replaced.

The cheapest option will be used not the most expensive. If there is a gap then adding silicone will not effect the strength of the mount. We use it on much more expensive cameras that stand up to a lot more abuse.
Wasn't it a Canon 5d or something that had a light leak from the viewfinder and Canons solution was some black tape applied internally.

Whatever they do, hopefully they provide users with a recall that actually works, wonder what happens with cameras that are imported, whether Sony UK would deal with it.

On the light leak issue, I have seen this with Lee RF75 big stopper filters on long exposures. I put it down to light sneaking between the filter holder corner and the back of the big stopper when the sun is behind & to the side of the camera. I put my hat over the camera & top of the filter holder when doing long exposures and no problems. This would of course eliminate the issue if it is a lens mount light leak. I'll need to experiment a bit when I get my camera back as I wouldn't want to malign Lee's lovely kit.

Non light-leaky long exposure - 30 secs

Well im glad I didn't buy one then!!! Thanks for the pic! I do actually want one as my minolta lenses are in dire need of an A7 and A LAE4 but i shall wait!

Id also personally wait and see how Sony resolves this situation.

TBH that looks like internal filter reflections to me on the top right, but is definitely odd. I wouldn't have expected a light leak to be so clearly defined as it would wash more generally across the image (most likely the lower half as the image is inverted on the sensor and most light would be coming from the top)

It does seem to be a QC issue but some are reporting getting replacements with the same problem, so it must be quite a few out there with the problem. You must have one of the 'good' samples.

As pointed out though (in the link) it seems like the leak is coming from the same point, so cant blame a filter.

Good point well argued.

Could have been a nice shot too, though slightly unbalanced with the horizon a bit high IMHO :D

I used to use a slot in 10 stop and had to use a bit of black felt to cover camera, I still have that felt and a clip - looks like taking a pic back in the early days!

Firmware update coming...

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/great-news-sony-a7-and-a7r-firmware-update-coming-on-march-19/

"Image quality improvement"? Maybe it's a tweat to JPEG's? Maybe something... MORE???

The one update I'd like to see is the ability to assign back screen off to a function key. It'd be such an easy thing, I asume(?) and it'd improve my user experience as having the screen on all the time and having to dive into the menu to turn it off/on does annoy me. Come on Sony... Give me a firmware update... You can do it...

- support for the focus hold button of the new SEL 70-200G lens
- Start up time reduction
- Image quality improvement
- Adds Live view grading and smooth reflection application. Improves “Time Laps” APP.

Yes. My initial suspicion was water has got into that thumb dial area.

Bit of back peddling from Sony. They have now stated that the A7r is now not weather resistant. News of light leaks is also very disconcerting.

Is there a facility to save settings? I've not found one and I do have a habit of changing them at various moments during handling....:(

Yup, they started pulling that part of the spec from retailers when I first read of the light leak issue (worldwide).

Doesn't matter much - non of my lenses are weather sealed and I didn't make use of the feature when I had an Olympus OM-D E-M5, I'm not sure that I'm weatherproofed.

I guess some people wont mind that much, but Im confident some will want to use it in wet/dusty conditions (as sold/advertised).

Interesting that the 5D and D800E show similar 'light leaks' and in particular the D800E looks terrible. Are we going to see internet fireworks from Nikon owners demanding refunds?
