The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Anyone have issues using back button focus? I was using it the other night and it missed focus quite a lot in the studio, using face detect and eye focus - although I had more success with that. Should say a7iii with 24-70 f4, using modelling lights

How do you know its BBF, did you switch to shutter focus and have better results in the same conditions? Have you still got focus with front release turned on while using BBF?

Because I set it up with bbf, no shutter on the trigger. Eye focus on another button. two weeks ago I had better results on the shutter button in very similar conditions, that's why I asked

Did you see the AF green dots appear before pressing the shutter button?

yep every time, might be my technique, not really sure, I'll have another go in a week or two but I was surprised at how many times it missed AF.

Something that is glass, not plastic.

I have this, works fine.

Looks good to me!

I'm so old I was a barber that used to ask that

Barbers are a lot like Taxi men, they are experts on the weather, politics and current affairs, religion, nationalities, disabilities, diets, trends, the price of petrol these days and what's 'really bad' for you in general. Better than doctors they are! :D

Actually I’m really into health from every angle and it’s true I used to dish out info 5 or 6 x a day some weeks lol

I love the banter I have with both Taxi drivers and my barber, I don't think UK taxi drivers are near as friendly as the Irish ones, but if you get a Taxi over here, you will get the low down on the meaning of life no matter how short the journey :D Barbers are similar, they test you out first with leading questions such as "Did you see the match?" [vague, unless you did indeed see the match and therefore are into sport!] - bloody geniuses IMO

Tell them you're into camera gear though ... and it goes all quiet :tumbleweed: :LOL:

In my case it wasn’t,I had some very enthusiastic camera owner customers,in fact made some good friends that way and we would chat for ages often to annoyance of waiting customers lol

So the more I use the little A7iii the more I like the little things that make things a little easier than the D750. I’m just about ready to make the switch I think! Just need to find a decent priced 70-200 GM. If that’s ever possible!!!

As time passes the more you’ll get used to it. :)

Stop It.

Can we ban all talk of how good the A7III is until I've made my mind up please!

You also get 3, so you can get it wrong and not waste all your money. My first one went in the bin.

I have the same ones. Top tip I read for installing these is to do it in the bathroom after you've had a warm shower. The moisture in the air traps dust and makes the air clearer. I installed all mine this way without any dust.

One problem I do have with these (and probably all protectors) is that there is no good grip for flipping out the screen so I've found the covers peeling off where I tend to grab the screen to articulate it. Kind of annoying.

There's an 85mm f1.8 in the for sale section, at a good price too.

I've been very pleased with mine :D

The only tempting thing is using the Canon R with a 50/1.2 for holiday.

All about the bokeh.

The Canon R lens line-up certainly looks better than Nikon’s Z range.
I wonder if Sony will announce f1.2 GM versions of their 35mm and 50mm lenses.
And a 35mm f1.8
:D

I don’t think Sony will make a 50/1.2 AF, the Sony Zeiss Planar is their GM with a different logo. Like Sigma don’t make a 50/1.2. Not sure what’s stopping them but Canon can do it.

I guess some makers think the potential sales aren't big enough to justify an AF 50mm f1.2. Why Sony wont do a 35mm f1.8 is anyones guess.

Nothing stopping them but sales. The Z unicorn lens is .95 and the R the 1.2. how many will they really sell? Even 1.4 is fairly specialist but the production cost will be lower and so will asking price.

Does the A7iii have spot focus? Not flexible spot or tracking ect.. Just normal spot focus. I want to assign it to a button but it doesn't seem to have it. Closest it has is center focus when you push the joystick in.

Yes, it's like the 3rd one down. You can assign so it flip to it with a button.
