A9 cards ...damn expensive

I was thinking 256gb primary + 128gb secondary

but 256gb (1000x) only 150mb/s read, less write
128gb (2000x) for 300mb/s read and 150 write..

My shopping list was something like...

2 x SONY ALPHA A9 CAMERA BODY
SONY FE 24-70MM F2.8 GM G MASTER LENS
SONY 70-200MM F2.8 G MASTER LENS
SONY FE 85MM F/1.4 GM LENS
SONY FE 35MM F1.4 DISTAGON T* ZA LENS
2 x LEXAR PROFESSIONAL 256GB 1000X SDHC UHS-II MEMORY CARD
2 x LEXAR 128GB PROFESSIONAL UHS-I SDHC 633X CLASS 10 MEMORY CARD
2 x SONY NP-FZ100 Z-SERIES RECHARGEABLE BATTERY PACK

On the look out for deals...

What you doing with all your Leica gear?

Sadly for me I can not jump ship just yet. The A9 is 3 times the price of the D500.

I guess for the pros and the loaded amateur shooter it’s not an issue but no way I can afford an A9.

One day maybe, when they become affordable used. But until then, sadly not.

Guess the A9 is more aimed at the D5 anyway - FX and comparable prices.

If in the future they can bring the A9 tech to a more affordable price point I may well be in!!
Or get a job as a programmer, join the gang here:LOL:

Do you need all of the gear?

I doubt it ! :) but I don't want to make any hasty decisions I might regret...

Once I get a feel of the A9, I hope to understand whether my Leica stuff still has a place in my life :)

Having something for portraits, that is not the A9, would be nice - and well I've often thought of the Hasselblad X1D - but the next revision at 100MP will probably be out at some point soon.. so no rush again

The programmers on here dont seem to do to bad A9’s A7Riii ‘s cough .....cough ......

One of the following if probably the case:
- They have two lots of earning i.e. a second earning to rely upon
- lot more experience than me and hence much larger salary
- they don't care about savings or having to buy a house etc (i.e. they already have one or they don't care for it)
- they are super talented

Ok - event, action, street.

How does this setup sound? Plus a 1.4 TC?

2 x Sony A9

FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM
FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS
FE 85mm F1.4 GM
Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA

The 35mm is physically a little big for street perhaps, maybe I need to throw in a decent pancake or similar?
Think you have pretty much everything covered there ;)

lol, why RIP D750?

I read A9 reviews by wedding photographers, who typically say something like 20 FPS is overkill, but sometimes it's handy for such and such scenario

I just read

"12 images per second at maximum when shooting uncompressed RAW."

So, common place a wedding photographer is probably shooting uncompressed RAW right, and couldn't achieve 20 FPS like this?

- or does everyone shoot compressed?
Do you really need 20fps for anything, let alone a wedding? The 5D3 and D750 served you well and what are they 6 and 6.5fps?

I may be swayed over to Sony when I can afford the A7RIII. Although that will be some time and there may be a 4 or 5 out by then!!
Been looking at the A7riii myself but the system is way too expensive. Plus I had a play with the A7 and A72 again the other day, man are they horrible to hold.

That sucks.

Hmm that 2nd pic looks a lot like the stripe issue on the A7III. I'm sure people will probably be trying to replicate this issue so we may start seeing more of it in the coming weeks. Still not enough to put me off buying one though
It would make me question it tbh, it’s not like these things are £200 cameras

Wasn't a complaint I just want to understand, it prompts research where I found that compressed raw isn't much different to uncompressed, so going compressed seems quite sane..

My Sl does 11fps and I think on occasion more would be handy. . Just for some action shots..

Are you planning on shooting a lot of video? If not, why would you want or need 256/128GB SD cards? You’re planning a huge amount of hardware redundancy then storing all of your images from the day on single large cards. Get a pile of 64GB and rotate them through the day instead.

You missed the obvious;

Jpg redundancy on second card and no need to change at all.. Isn't that enough backup? As well as using two camera

I use 256gb 95mb/s at the mo

It also depends what you code in

You are right on the expense thing. As I’m doing more equestrian I would want the A9 - as that’s what would be the best bet for sports.

That’s already adding at least £2000 on to what the D500/D750 would sell for just for the body. Then there is the glass to consider.

Sony are or have headed on the right direction but as mentioned unless you do it for a living or have a good income the A9 is out of reach. I think the A9 body costs more than my entire Nikon set up!

But of course if I got a massive bonus or came in to some money I would probably just go buy one!!

Tbf though IF the a7iii lives up to the hype the AF should do what you want.

Sony sensors cough
Obviously my comment was very tongue in cheek aimed at Jonney, I honestly believe it's all a storm in a teacup ;)

As Twist mentioned I would expect the A7iii to be a match for the D750. However, you use the 70-200mm as your main lens and as you know the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 is very expensive, plus I would question the balance of this lens on the A7 compared to the 70-200mm on the D750. Have a camera/system that feels good in the hand is arguably more important than anything else imo.

Most of what I post here is for Jonney and Alan. Keeps them young.

Yes it's more expensive but arguably has more features and would be brand new on the market. Could just get a battery grip... at added expense.

Actually on reflection the Sony 70-200mm isn't that much more expensive than the latest Nikon one tbh. As for the battery grip I'm not sure that would help the balance for me, it's the normal grip that's not deep enough or comfortable enough fro me. Obviously YMMV

Diddnt nikon jus released a new 70-200 that's similar priced as the Sony one?

So decided to get the 70-200 f4 after getting the 16-35 f4

Will just sell the 18-105 f4 that never seen a single shoot haha

Yep but I have the old one and if anything I would be looking at something that matches the D500 more than the D750. Therefore it would probably mean an A7RIII or A9. Add the 70-200 to that and you are over 5k already!!! Zero chance of me every owning a sony for the next few years lol
