The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Computer says I have "Windows 11 Home".

As far as I can remember raws were displayed as generic icons until a few years ago or so and then they started appearing as previews.

Just on the constant updates triggering this, the last update was on 14th Jan and the one before that was 12th Dec, then 26th Nov and so on. They're never ending and not always visible to me and often I only know it's happened when I open a folder and see it full of previews and then I go into regedit and delete the files with the raw extensions I have again. Actually sometimes I suspect that an update is happening because my pc runs slow and sure enough the next time I turn it on it's fast again and my raw previews are back.

In the screen shot above there are generic icons and previews with a small PS in the corner. I've no idea why some appear like this but these will turn into generic icons once opened and saved again.

On the plug in devices, I'll need a printer cable or adapter and for external drives also, and my memory sticks will also need something.
Depends on what codecs you have installed Raws always showed as a preview image for me on Windows from about Windows 7 onwards.

You can buy a usb to usb c adaptor for penny’s. Although some from a good brand like Anker will be around a tenner for a pack of two.

A usb c printer cable can be bought for a couple of quid.

You said before your printer was a Canon Pro 200 though which is a wireless printer. There is no need to use a cable.

just realised and wondering why sigma is the only brand that you cant buy grey from the main brands? anyone know?

Panamoz stopped selling Sigma lenses due to a lot of returns for back focusing etc. That was a long time ago though before mirrorless. They also had some issues with Sigma.

E-infin do sell them but not via the U.K store don’t know why, likely getting the same threatening letters from Sigma that Panamoz had. You can however email them and they can create a manual order for you if the lens you want is advertised on the EU or U.S.A. versions of their site.

Cotswold do sell Sigma lenses.

And for me too in recent years until I do the regedit thing.

I don't know if regedit will still work on a new Windows pc but I assume it will and if not I may find another workaround. As there is also a workaround for Apple it's not the end of the world but it looks like I'll have to pay so I'll have to investigate and see if it's a one off payment or a subscription. With either system there's no guarantee a workaround will work forever. I think this is the Fisher Price effect taking over everything, the company decides what's right and safe and the customer has to shut up and like it or find the workaround.

With printers and cables, it's choice which gets eroded and we're forever pushed into doing what the company wants. Yes, I can print without a cable but I'll need to resolve the issue of external drives and USB sticks although TBH since I left work I've only needed to use a USB stick once, last November. Still, it's something else that I'm forced to deal with at the expense of my time and possibly money too. I do realise that no tech lasts forever but it's just something else to consider when what I want is the reliability and useability of a white good. I just do not want to invest any time or effort into computers. I have better things to do :D

I am surprised especially with a laptop you wouldn’t already be using your printer wirelessly to avoid the hassle of having to connect the cable when you want to use it.

I have 2 printers and both sit right beside my Mac Studio and my P.C before that and I still have them set to print using WiFi as why take up a usb port for something that isn’t needed.

It also means my kids can connect to them and print from their computer, tablets and phones, which means they don’t have to have their own printers.

Also no extra anti virus software to mess things up or slow down you windows pc

That's true for Windows too. You can buy additional antivirus, but it comes ready baked in with regular free updates.

It does have an antivirus that you can configure thats pre-installed as part of the operating system. It doesn't work any differently though than installing a more premium antivirus in terms of how resource hungry it is. It not baked in as such just installed along with the other bloatware.

It doesn't just work either it has to be configured properly to be useful and is only useful as a baseline protection.

Norwich cameras sell Sigma. They also state that if they don't list what you want you can request it and they'll see if they can get it.

Sigma 85mm f1.2 coming according to the rumours guy

Looking forward what they come out with.... hope it's not massive

Looks interesting. They managed to make the f1.4 relatively svelte so hopefully this one will be too. Would be nice if they could get it under 900g.

would be nice if they manage to keep it to the size of their 35mm and 50mm f1.2 lenses.

I think that's a big ask, but you never know (y)

I am somewhat hopeful given the recent lenses from them. They seem have found the right compromise between size, weight and optical performance
3 out of 5 of my lenses are sigma now, if 85mm/1.2 isn't a behemoth then 4 out of 5 will be sigma!

I don’t use 85mm enough to justify swapping ;)

It’s gonna be massive size this one. I think Sony might do one this year as well and expect it might be a bit smaller so not gonna jump in for this straight away.

It'll be nice to read and watch the reviews and I'm sure many will love it.

I've not really warmed to the Sony f1.8 but I remember using my Sigma f1.4 more on my Canon DSLR.

They’ve rumoured a Sony 85mm f1.2 for so long now I’ve pretty much given up on them bringing one out, but there’s always a chance (y)

If Sony make one it might well be the smallest and lightest and possibly even the best in class too but it might also be half as much again as the Sigma. Plus you'll have to wait and see if they really do it.

Yep that’s what you pay the money for.

As you said if Sony do one it will likely be smaller, weight less and be more expensive. However it will also likely have better a.f and will be able to be used at over 15 fps.

For me all that would be worth it. Would also hope that it would have nicer rendering than the Sigma I personally don’t like the Sigma 85 f/1.4 rendering and colours at all although maybe they will improve that with the f/1.2. The current Sigma85 f/1.4 was very disappointing compared to the old school DSLR cream machine, it was probably my favourite ever lens.

does the sigma 1.4 not also have significantly more distortion than the sony equivalent

When I first read about this 85mm f1.2 I thought at the price it'll be at it'll be very niche but then I thought people want nice things and some will want an 85mm f1.2 even if they don't need one. Good luck to them. I hope they get a lot of enjoyment from it.

It does but it’s pincushion distortion for portraits that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It is also easily corrected.

Off course it’s different if it’s just a hobby. Price doesn’t really come into for me if I want or need something for work I get it. Just like a mechanic does every time the Snap-on rep calls in.

I am certainly one of these people i.e. not needing f1.2 but would still want it :D

I'm down to 5 lenses now. I don't see myself owning a huge lot more lenses now.

I swapped my Sony 35GM for new Sigma 35mm f1.2ii. Only used it couple of times so far but it's been nice using it, especially indoors.
But I need the size of any 85mm f1.2 to be reasonable for me to swap. I'm not going to carry around massive 1kg+ lens. Till such a time I'll continue using the samyang one i have.

I used my first gen 85 f1.4 for some portrait work last weekend, and if only focusing was better it would be fantastic. I really like the way it renders.

The only lens I'm thinking of buying is another TTA 50mm f2 thinking it might not show the blue/purple tint toward the edges it showed on my A7 on my newer cameras.

I have twp Sony mount MF 50's, Voigtlander f2 apo and f1.2 and they're both so much better than the TTA but the TTA is tiny and light.

I have the second gen, the AF is still behind Sony or sigma variants but much improved from the first gen which i also had.

I'm not shooting professionally so the odd missed shot isn't end of the world for me.

I really like the rendering of the f1.4 DG DN. Colour aren't as nice as Sony GM's but easy fixable, however I appreciate if you're doing a shoot using other lenses that's not ideal.

Occasionally it misses completely, which isn't always obvious in a viewfinder. One thing I had forgotten was the minimum focal distance is actually quite long, and I struggled with some of the still life work we needed to do.

I have owned Sony 85/1.8, 85GM, sigma 85DN and both samyang 85mm f1.4 version
The minimum focal distance is about the same between them give or take.
Not sure you'll get any better in this class of lenses

It's probably completely normal, and the 50 f1.2 has spoiled me. That and my adapted Tamron 90mm macro. :p

As it's quiet and just for fun and because as yet there are no pictures on this page, some pictures I've taken at 85mm. It's not my most used length. Although I think my Sigma 85mm f1.4 was my favourite 85mm there isn't a single picture taken with that lens in my favourites folder. I do remember some taken with it that I like but none made the cut as a favourite.

Oi! That's MY fleece!

This next one is on the bedroom wall. It replaced a picture of my Midget which was my first two seat soft top. We were picking brambles and therefore wearing old clothes hence the lines and different colours in MY shirt which she pinched.

More bramble picking.

Two taken with film era 85mm f2's. The path down to the Italian Gardens, Saltburn, woman in the distance.

This next one was taken through the car windscreen when picking her up from college.

I sold all my film era 85's so I just have the Sony f1.8 now.

Anyone got any nice 85mm pictures?

New 35mm f2.2 sold out.

I was going to go out today with my A7III and 85mm with one particular scene in mind but it's grey, cold, raining and gusting at gale level so I didn't bother. Hope others had better conditions.

Been like that for the last few weeks here in Fife and forecast is the same for the next week or so

Think it's the worst I've seen at this time of year. I've manged one game of golf since the 28th December and out only once with the camera in that time.

Yeah the sea in Standrews has been wild the past two weeks

We've had it grey and murky for what feels like an eternity in our area, so many people are commenting saying they've never known grey skies for such a prolonged period :(

It's just grey and raining a bit today, the wind has stopped and it's not too cold so that's an improvement. We're overdue a few hours out but the weather hasn't been great and even if we go out there's no real point taking a camera as I already have a lot of pictures of my area in weather like this.
