The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

What an amazing hike this morning. The light was perfect lovely warm colours and the landscape really suited it.

First one walking up to near Rivington Pike catching the sunrise.

Next heading away from the Pike and up Winter Hill.

The road to the mast really is a beautiful walk up here. Love the texture of the old tarmac.

What a morning, hope you all like these, all shot with the A7C and 20mm f1.8, my new favourite lens.

Very nice. I am so looking forward to being out most of this coming weekend!

Thank you Bob, just ordered now so hope to have it tonight.
I do favour USB-C for updating and charging where you have it e.g. A7iii - any good one for data will do, same as mini-USB.
You just have to be aware some are a bit chunky or wide behind the metal part and don't fit everything.

Something for the biker fans. I must say, I liked the look of this bike, is it a Harley D? I blanked out the main number plate numbers for discretion, although it looked better with it.

Ah memories! Not been up to Winter Hill and Rivington Pike for about 50 years.

I have a wedding tomorrow been a while  :$ hopefully I remember how everything works.:p Looking forward to putting the 35GM through its paces and hopefully the Godox AD100 which is supposed to arrive later today.

What you pairing the 35 up with?

I've been shooting 24/50 up to now - thinking about changing it up just to use the 35 :) typically it would be the 85..but could i use the 135?

I use a 35/85, my missus uses 24/55 at some point I will be getting the 50 f/1.2 and will be switching too 24/50 and my missus will be going 35/85.

The 135 is excellent but too long for me for weddings. I only really use mine for family portrait sessions.

It's lovely away from the main bits. When I got back to the car it was heaving never seen so many people at the barns.

No, it's a slang name for a harley....they're a pig to ride....
Although the H can stand for Harley in Hog when referring to the Harley Owners Group....(HOG)

Nice double meaning then

Looks like it says Harley n the tank, I'm not sure what model it started out as but clearly done a lot of customisation.

Considering buying the 30mm Sigma F1.4 and completing the trio. I love my Sigma F1.4 16mm and 56mm though sometimes I have to get very close with the 16mm or step quite a bit further back with the 56mm. Not a problem but wondering if the 30 (45mm FF equivalent) would be a nice middle ground. The other thing with the 16mm is the way it can make structures appear to slope or basically not be straight by the nature of being wide angle.

Just had the DPD Email saying my a9 and 200-600mm will be delivered tomorrow, just in time for the long weekend. Golf and New Toys to play with, it don't get better....

Slippery slope to post on this thread but I have some questions about the A7iii.

1) First of all, one thing I'm not sure I have understood correclty from reading reviews. Does the lens focus at the aperture you are shooting instead of focusing wide open like a dslr does?
Is that mean that at f/1.8 the lens focus fast, then slower each time you close the aperture untill somewhere (maybe f/8?) when it cannot autofocus anymore? I may have understood that totally wrong?

2) is the A7iii a good choice for the 200-600 and is there a cheaper option to get into wildlife

4) i'm very attracted by the samyang 18 f/2.8 FE, samyang 35 f/1.8 FE, samyang 75 f/1.8 FE that would cover all my general purpose photo, anybody uses them, they seem cheap and small but great value?

in order:
1) yes but you can change the default to focus wide open like on DSLRs. But unless you are trying to track at like f11 it shouldn't be a huge issue tbh.

2) Its very good choice. A cheaper option is the sigma 100-400mm DN (i.e. mirrorless version). Its also a fair bit smaller and lighter but of course you have less reach.

3) Samyang 18mm f2.8 - I had one copy it was decentered so I returned it. most people that own one seem to like it.
Samyang 35mm f1.8 - most reviews say its sharper than the sony 35mm f1.8 at longer focus distances but somewhat weak at very close focus distances.
Samyang 75mm f1.8 - I had one of these briefly. I bought a new copy but it had a fair amount of dust in the lens so I returned it. But the IQ was decent. not the sharpest in the corners at f1.8 but for what its intended for that isn't a huge issue. renders nicely too. sharpens up incredibly well at f4, so you can use for landscapes too.
Overall I have liked the IQ out of all samyang lensesI have owned. their rendering a bit warm which annoys me a little in post processing but otherwise they are optically excellent and hit way above their price range. AF can be hit and miss depending on which lens you buy but the more recent lenses like the ones you mentioned are pretty reliable for most part (wouldn't rely on them to shoot professionally but as a hobby they're more than good enough).

So would the focus slow down a fair bit at something like f8 on the 200-600?

not really it should be fine. f8 is only 2/3rd stop less than f6.3 which is the maximum anyway.
but like I said you can turn it off if absolutely needed in very low light in which case I'd question why you aren't shooting the lens wide open in the first place!

And in the UK I may be have like two days in the year when I have had the luxury of stopping down my 200-600mm, I normally shoot it wide open 99% of the time.

And what difference would that make?
Does it focus quicker? It's already very quick....
Quicker and more reliable
More light makes it easier for the camera to focus. But like I said if anyone is shooting at f8 it means they have ample light otherwise you'd be mostly shooting wide open anyway

A7 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 plus No.4 close up filter.

Off we go.
