The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Interesting, I've googled and searched on the Sony site but I can't find anywhere where they actually list authorised sellers, where have you seen this? I've actually just emailed Sony to ask it Amazon are an authorised seller as it will be useful to know for the future.
Just try putting in a cashback claim and you'll know lol

I did exactly the same thing - couldn't find a list (unlike other manufacturers, in my experience) so decided to ask the question.
I'll call them on Monday - it could make a difference where I buy the lens.

Question: Does a lens "supplied and delivered" by Amazon fit the bill/qualify for the current Sony cashback promotion?
Thanks in anticipation.

I have availed of cashback last summer on a camera I bought from Amazon but I would always check first. I had to upload the Invoice from Amazon and received the payout about 6 weeks later. One thing I noticed this year was that amazon don’t have any promotional message about cashback as per last year.

Get it ordered then you can let me know what it’s like ;)
I have contacted some shops lets see if they are willing to do a discount.
I normally keep a keen eye out for demo/open box models. But with shops being closed its be slim pickings :(

A couple from this afternoon - our first mildly-distanced time with the grand children since lockdown commenced. Used the 55 f1.8 because we were in the garden & needed a balance between distance and space around the kids, plus a smaller lens makes the older child less likely to demand to play with the camera.

He seems to be a very good photographer but I didn't much like him when I interacted with him.
I contacted him for some information about Tulip fields in Netherlands last year and he didn't want to divulge even a single piece of information. He basically wanted me to sign up for his course or nothing!

Ended up getting information from locals and a airbnb couple who could not host us but were still lovely and provided information. Really liked the locals, very nice people in general.

Oh dear...

A7 and Voigtlander 50mm f2 at f8 + No.4 close focus filter.

These have lost sharpness by posting here, they're very sharp on my screen.

This is an outstanding lens. It's unusual in that at f2 you get round secular highlights and then they change to angled but at f2.8 they become round again and then after that angled again.

Here's a 50% crop from another.

That first one is brilliant, love it.

Getting a bit miffed with Sony files particularly for landscapes. More the connection with LR than the actual files.

The preview JPEG looks great and histogram great, go into the develop mode and they always look massively underexposed (RAW), I usually need to add a stop or more in some cases.

Am I right in thinking that the on camera histogram is for the JPEG and not the raw? If so, should I be overexposing the shot by a stop in camera to get accurate exposure in LR?

Same on all Sony cameras in my experience. Maybe it’s just all cameras and hasn’t bothered me so much in the past.

jpg or RAW histograms should match. Might be worth setting LR to use your camera's standard profile to begin with and see if that makes a difference?

I have never had this issue tbh with you. Perhaps its some defaults that you have inadvertently set that's screwing with your RAW on import?

I think most histograms are jpeg. It must say somewhere in the manual though?

If it's not a software setup issue like nadbytes says it could maybe be a metering issue. I sometimes boost the exposure either before taking the shot or post capture but I mostly use evaluative which looks at the whole scene so strong light in one area can lead to others looking underexposed. If it's not the software maybe take a look at the scenes that need + exposure comp and see if you can see any difference v those that don't. That could help you understand what's going on.

I use CS5 and what I have to do with the exposure usually makes sense when looking at the scene.

Not strictly true, even with no settings applied jpeg and raw histograms will never be 'exactly' the same as raw contains more detail and often don't clip as early. It's not unusual to see minor highlight clipping with the jpeg histogram and no clipping with the raw histogram for example.

Also, it will depend on what settings you apply in camera, for example if you use camera standard colour profile and then import using an adobe profile it will look different. Likewise, if you have saturation, contrast etc altered in camera that won't show on the raw (y)

Sony have replied to me re the Amazon and cash back query. Amazon is no longer and authorised dealer and therefore I take it from this that Sony products bought from Amazon will NOT qualify for the cash back promotion :(

"Thank you for contacting Sony support.
With reference to your enquiry regarding the summer cashback, we regret to inform you that Amazon is not one of the eligible dealers. You can check the eligible ones in the below link: https://campaign.odw.sony-europe.com/redemption/dealers/GB_DI_Dealers.pdf
Should you have any further questions, please feel free to reply to this e-mail.

Not really a surprise to be honest.

Most manufacturers are a bit iffy with Amazon at the best of times. It wouldn't be the first time that Amazon themselves, not a third party reseller have sold grey market products.

A few years ago a friend of mine bought a Sigma lens advertised as supplied and delivered by Amazon and then found out when it had a fault that Sigma wouldn't honour the warranty as it was grey. He did eventually get Amazon to sort it but it took ages for them to do so.

yep claiming warranty via. Amazon is practically non-existent.
A colleague of mine had a similar problem (another electronic device, can't remember what) and ended up having to point to consumer rights laws and all sorts to get them to act.
Then they don't get your product fixed they simply send you a new one.

Shops on the other hand are great at handling warranty claims. I have only had experience with LCE and wilkinsons for claims and both have been excellent at sorting out matters.

Also amazon do not check their returns. They are kind of a mass seller and don't care. I have seen a number of reports online from people getting fake batteries and SD cards from amazon. Basically people buy fake, swap out the original from amazon and then return it.
So someone could easily do the same for lenses and cameras and most manufactures check via. serial number. You have an amazon receipt with a UK serial number lens/body while some poor bloke has your grey import with no warranty.

To be fair to Amazon they can also be great for returns, I sent them back my daughters Samyang 24mm after she had been using it for 5 months and they gave me a full refund.

The main issue for manufacturers with Amazon is that there stock can be grey or "not purchased from official channels" which means the stock isn't grey but isn't seen as legit either by the manufacturer. Official channels just means purchased from the main distributor. Sigma and Tamron both used to have warnings on their websites saying that they wouldn't provide warranty on stock purchased from Amazon but I don't think they do any more.
