The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It has distortion I wouldn't call it bad. The FE28 you have is bad :p
And just like that lens its meant to be corrected in software, hence smaller optics :)
Yeah I noticed the 28mm has marked distortion at the edges.

I’ve noticed on the A7R IV that AF-C is noticeably faster than AF-S. AF-C acquires focus instantly whereas AF-S takes a brief moment, not slow but not instant like AF-C. I thought both modes were hybrid AF but based on this I’m guessing not. Is AF-C phase detect only, or is that hybrid and AF-S is contrast only?

I use AFC all of the time

Yes I really like the tamron 28-75 it a great lens for it money and having a 2.8. Love it

Also, I've found a 'quirk'. If you're using one of your saved settings (1,2 and 3 on the mode dial) and change the setting such as aperture it doesn't reset to the saved setting when you turn the camera off and back on again, I got 'caught out' with this yesterday. It does however revert back to the saved setting if you go to another mode setting (such as manual mode) and back to the saved setting (1,2 or 3). Weird. Does anyone know whether Sony has a feedback page that you can contact them about such issues?

Overall I'm very happy though (y)

I like this quirk. I sometimes drift but you know exactly what your predetermined settings are, isn’t that the point?! Often, if I pick up the camera needing a quick shot, I’ll click out and back into 1 say, to reset and shoot in my go-to mode. Did it for this shot earlier, as we were playing and I thought hadn’t used the camera for weeks so just said, “strike a pose.” Cheesy, huh!

On my a7iii when I had it I did use af-s. But since I had a9 I never taken it out of af-c

Jokes aside, I do use AF-S for the studio. Slows you down, which is a good thing in that situation.

The lens doesn't lack sharpness, but shooting most of the time 6400 ISO or higher tends to blur stuff like writing a little.

We'll worth a visit when things are back to normal.

Toni, I find it hard to view your images at the size you're posting them at without scrolling down , you do know the forum size limit for images is 1024 pixels along the longest edge???

Les :)

It’s bizarre, but I can’t help but think it’s just the start of a more enforced break from life as we know it, soon. Let’s hope that most people take heed and we curb any really longer lasting implications.

I’m working from home today, which isn’t anything new, but it is with a 4 year old around who is normally at her grandmothers on a Thursday. The eldest is ‘helping out’ but the two together for a long period is challenging. Happy families [emoji16]

i usually wfh 4 days a week so doing it full time is no issue. Having to home school from next week on the other hand, will be a real challenge.

Twice in my life both years ago I've gone away thinking there's a real chance that I might not come back. The first time was before digital imaging and I took some picture with me and the second time was before smartphones and I took a tiny digital camera with me with some pictures on it I could view on the back screen. Yesterday I found myself taking pictures to have with me and then I realised that these days even I have a laptop, tablet and smartphone so as long as there's power I can see pictures of the people and places that matter to me. I also told myself not to be so dramatic :D

Hi Lez, is that better?

The forum size limit refers to images uploaded to TP servers, rather than hosted elsewhere.

Just contact them via the online contact us page (didn't see Riz's post in time). Here's my email, bit melodramatic but sometimes it gets more attention ;)

"Hi,

I don't know if this is the best way to contact you but you don't have a product feedback or feature enhancement section to be able to contact you.

I have been a Nikon and Olympus user for many years and have just recently made the huge decision and investment to change over to Sony, and have bought the A7R IV. Overall I am very happy with the product but there is one thing that is very tiresome indeed and I would like to request that you address this please.

The point in question is that many functions of the camera are disabled whilst the camera is writing images to the card, and even with fast UHS-II cards this time can be considerable. Initially the Olympus OMD-EM1 Mark II had this same issue but Olympus fixed it via a firmware update and I am hoping that you can do the same. It really does spoil what is otherwise a fantastic experience with the camera.

Kind regards"

Out of curiosity what is you want to do when the camera is writing to buffer that you can’t? I can’t say I have ever noticed not being able to do something I wanted.

Hopefully the school will provide you with decent learning provision.

We have set up a whole online learning environment for ours, so I can set almost everything online now.

Our school is staying open so I’ll be carrying on working as normal by the sounds of it (providing I don’t catch it, which is fairly likely seeing as I’ve have 0 protection from it). No idea how many kids we will have in from our school or other schools as the list of ‘key workers’ still isn’t sorted.

Tough times all round, gutted for our y11s and 13s.

If anyone’s kids are in secondary school and you’re struggling for resources I can probably get hold of some from most subjects to help you out.

The two main things for me are image review and APS-C crop. If you shoot a burst of more than 2 shots quite often you can't actually review the last images and maybe only the first two. Also, it doesn't allow you to switch between APS-C and FF, one of the main features I bought the A7RIV for. I'd guess there's others but none that I've needed yet. Whilst it's not the end of the world it is frustrating and it is a step backwards. Olympus solved this via firmware so I'm not sure why Sony can't?

Cheers Tom. It's the trying to work from home managing a team remotely and doing the home schooling that I know I'll struggle with. For a 5 year old it's going to seem like a hot of a holiday to start with. Plenty of people in the same boat though, and I'm thankful I still have a job and am able to work the way I can.

Tbh the novelty of WFH is wearing off now. Used to do it one or two days a week and that was great. But doing it all 5 days for a long period of time isn't nice. I am already longing for some real human interaction!

Not to mention I am hoping missus and I don't kill each other, that's a bigger threat than covid :p

My brothers are in y13. They were all set i.e. expecting good grades, had offers from uni etc. Now no idea what future holds. Just hoping now that a year isn't wasted.
No online classes for then though.
I think my parents can send them to school because they work in hospitals. But don't think they'll.

My daughter is year 11. She went through a patch where she struggled around year 9 & into 10, grades really dropped etc. But she's pulled it around now and her recent mocks and parents evening were really, really good and easily enough to get her onto her college course that she had applied for. So proud of her for that. She's spent the past few weeks staying on at school - I've gone to pick her up at 7:30pm twice this week to take her home (both my kids live with their mum) where she's been working on her GCSE artwork..... She's doing a lovely clay piece featuring her face, her dogs face and everything related... And now for what?

I'd imagine they'd get their mock results as their GCSE's? At a minimum they'd have to surely? But the worst of it, she said she don't want her mock results because she was going to do better than that in May!!

Even I'm gutted if I'm being honest :(

I spoke to my son who is a Geography teacher about grading pupils yesterday and within seconds he bamboozled me with what they were instructed to take into account such as course work, historic testing, mock exams, class input, projected grades etc. before the head of department and himself agreed a grade for each pupil. He felt they were trying to be as fair as possible to each of their pupils. Hopefully your daughters teachers will be the same. I wish her luck.
