The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Bet I’ve used mine than you did your with Sony kit
Ok go on then, be interesting to see .... take a screen shot of your LR statistics for all your photos taken with Sony gear and I will do the same. :D

If you buy a manual lens for the Sony MILC's with no electrical contacts will manual focus aids (peaking and focus zoom) still work?

I am pretty sure you can setup a Custom button for focus peaking etc. :)

What is the cheapest Macro lens for the A73? I don't mind third part with or without adapter. I looked at 'tubes' but I guess they won't get as close?

Sigma do a 70mm macro for about £450, I considered it before getting the Sony 90mm. It didn't seem to review well and I was able to pick up a used 90mm for not much more money.

Sony also do a 50mm f/2.8 macro for the same money but it supposed to be a bit crap.

As autofocus isn't really needed I imagine you could use any of the cheap options for Canon and use an adaptor for not a lot of money. Maybe you could track down one of the old Canon fit Tamron 90mm f/2.8's they where always excellent and very cheap. Would imagine you could get the Tamron for around £100-£120 or so plus the cost of an adaptor.

If money isn't such a concern the Sony 90mm is excellent and probably the best macro lens at around that focal length I have used.

Can any helpful A7r ii owners tell me that I should save about £600 and go for one of these rather than the A7r iii ?

A7rii is good, I upgraded to the riii at a cost of about £500 and for me it’s worth it for the dual slots, better ergos, joy stick, AF etc. If you don’t need those, keep your money.

AF wouldnt worry me - haven't firmware updates improved it ?

Would miss a joystick but I'm sure I could get used to it ?

Not sure about the ergonomics - I liked the A73 but they may be better

I'm not a pro so dual card slots isnt an absolute must but its a shame. I presume IQ is basically the same ?

IQ is pretty much the same. exceptional. should be able to find a nice decent used a7rii for around £950.

I tell you what is one massive advantage for me, being able to very quickly move the AF point with no faffing around or just being able to use the touch screen. Quite minor but makes a difference for me.

IQ is the same.

I've noticed that my camera isn't on the latest firmware 1.10 (it's currently 1.00), do you lose all of your user settings when you update or does it keep them?

On the A7III focus peaking starts automatically if the lens fitted can't focus automatically - i.e. any manual adapted lens. You need to assign a button for zoom.

First thing I do update software when I first get new gadgets.

Wonder what extra you get

It’s confusing as it says you get my menu but I already have that o_O

Yup. Deffo. But of course you'll need to manually call up the magnified view, it wont just kick in when you turn the focus ring if there's no communication. I do this all the time with film era lenses.

I've needed a barber a lot more than I've needed a plumber. :)

But with what plumbers charge... We had a dripping tap and I'd worked out that you don't change washers these days so I got a quote for a new tap, £400. That's quite a few years of hair cuts. I bought a tap and did it myself.

I've never been out with a plumber. The most practical GF I had was one that had her own cleaning business :D

I've never lost any settings but I make a note of those that matter to me, just in case, mainly what I put in the custom menu.

You don’t need to with the A7RIV you can save them to the sd card, you can do the same with the A9II as well.
That’s what I was going to say, but I didn’t realise it was only those two that you can do it on. To say how innovative Sony are they’re a bit slow with certain things ;)

Typical but can’t see anymore fw update for the a9 so should be ok

Unlike canikons half baked releases, can we call them half baked? Maybe quarter baked.. Then blatant copying... Talk about sloooow. Eye af, animal eye af, actual ff milc, thank goodness they finally woke up. Nikons in deep s***, canons finally pushing sensor dev and by the look of the R5 it'll be very good IF canon don't cripple the initial spec sheet.
