The 21/22 Football Thread

It's very early days but, it would be amusing to see them in the Championship next season

Definitely the worst start for Arsenal, to not even score a goal in their 1st three games yet scored 6 in the cup!
The cup result needs to be seen in the context of the team WBA put out. Unlucky to face Cit€h after that though, as it could have been the confidence boost they needed against most other teams.

Fun and games in the Liverpool v Chel$ki game. :$ James sent off for handball on the line. It was funny watching Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink trying to make the argument it wasn't a penalty!

That won't happen. They maybe crap, but not that crap...
So far they are very much that crap! Even Norwich are above them [only because they managed at least to score a goal over 3 matches] and they're fav's to go down - I do think they'll turn it around though, they have the players right there , just not the right mental attitude atm. Looking through their team it's defence they need to build up, not a stand out defender among them, for a team who were once famed for their tough defence

This reminds me of when we were staying with a bunch of UK families in St. Louis about a decade back, we all got on great but they'd try that lame 'say 'thirty three and a third' - thinking I'd say it as 'Turty tree and a turd' but I reversed it and would say 'Firty Free and a Furd' ... like people from England do :p Also my name's not 'Keef'! :ROFLMAO:

Damn, without more details though, I'd wait to hear a lot more before judging.

Thing is, it's not like the Keef or even the Smiff example because even well-educated people in Ireland don't pronounce 'th' as..well....'the' It's a mystery to me.

Re Keef. It is, generally, the less well educated who live in the south..London, I think, who say that.

"Could I have your name please ? ."Yeah, it's Keef Riley " "Is that with one f or two ? " :)

Man Utd in talks with Ronaldo.

I've long thought he would end his career back at United.

During a radio football chat I heard one of the contributers suggest that Ronaldo will want to beat Giggsy's record age for playing at United ..ie 40 .. so he'll likely go to 41. He's 36. (Feb 5th 1985..Madeira. ) I mention Madeira because I didn't know he was born in the capital Funchal unitil I was there on holday a few years ago and saw that they had a statue of him.

If it is the statue I remember seeing on the internet of him, it would be the sign saying who it was rather than any resemblance that gave it away who it was. ;)

 Yes.. You're right. I now recall thinking 'what a crap statue'.

Being a bit of a cynic, I rather suspect his love and respect for United and Sir Alex meshes nicely with establishing the optimum location for a global brand a la Beckham.

Good luck to him I say.

Maybe some ham it up as it's a bit of a meme but the people from the UK I know are from all over, Newcastle, Leeds, London, Portsmouth etc, and they all pronounced it 'Keef' - But I also know Irish people who do pronounce their 'th' and many who ignore T in words completely :ROFLMAO: [usually mid word ts, like 'bu'er' for butter] I'm somewhere in the middle I think [words like 'think' I will pronounce th, but other times I'll pronounce words like 'there' as 'dare' - ]

As for Ronaldo, I wonder how his signing affects other players like Greenwood, who'd been doing quite well and getting first team play - likely to now be sidelined, a lot - he's taking somebody's place for sure and I doubt it'll be Bruno's

So far they are very much that crap!

And that's the point. Teams like Norwich will find it really hard to turn it around. With the funds at their disposal, I think it's highly unlikely Arsenal will go down, but then Spurs might actually win something, so anything is possible....

Strange looking table, spurs with maximum points and gunners with the minimum.
Must be a few irate Arsenal fans, read somewhere they have never been relegated or legally promoted.

September 25th Spurs play Arsenal at the Emirates. I wonder where in the table Arsenal will be by then and will they still have Arteta ? Put your answers on a post card and send it to....:D

Greenwood is playing well. I think they will simply offload Martial.

I think all Spurs fans think Arteta should be the last manager to be sacked!

Re first paragraph. The mind boggles :D

As far as I know the main penalty-taker at Manchester United is Bruno Fernandes, having said that others have taken them but will that continue when Ronaldo arrives..otherwise known as Penaldo.. ?

Aye, he's scored in each of the 3 games thus far, I keep thinking of Ronaldo as a Midfielder where he's more a Forward, or AM. I guess it's more Cavani and Martial who will feel more put out, Rashford too. They have about a dozen MF players already, think Pogba, Greenwood and Bruno are safe enough for now.

I hear that Spurs are after Wolves winger Adama Traore. No doubt requested by ex Wolves manager Nuno E. Santo. He -Traore not Santo...played well today and Wolves almost managed a draw against Manchester United. Getting a bit late in the day for a transfer but Levy has often done a deal at one minute to midnight...or in the case of transfers one minute to 11 00. pm... :D

They have the longest term of consecutive seasons in the top flight, on a run of 96 years, although, interestingly they remain the only team to be "elected" to the top flight (in 1919), rather than earn their spot through promotion. Nobody else comes close in consecutive seasons at the top (Everton have 68, Liverpool 66, Utd 47, Suds 44, Chelsea 33).

Arsenal don't do anything quickly (especially starting a season!!). I would be very surprised to see him go before Christmas. If we're still in the bottom 5 at that point it may happen.

I like the idea of Traore, and he is exciting to watch, and there is no one faster, but his actual goals and assist numbers are very low afaik. You keep thinking it is starting to click with him, but then... :(

Funny Santos wanting him though, because he left him on the bench a load of times if I recall correctly. Does he need to fill up the Spurs bench! :(

I agree - stands out but no real end product.

Well he didn't win anything at Wolves, and going to Spurs isn't going to change that is it???

I've spent too much time the past two days listening to TalkSport re the transfer window..right up to 11.45pm last night.

Seems Arsenal have spent the most..net. £140m but one pundit said they were mainly 23 and under. There was a bit of drama as the 11.00pm close looked like it would pass without the deal going through with Bologna to sign the Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Spurs were also interested in him earlier on in the window.. I see Bellerin has gone to Real Betis on loan..for one season.

A surprise as 11.00pm neared was that Spurs called Serge Aurier (he was in France) to tell him his contract has been cancelled. Seems this isn't normal practice. The reason was that they'd had no offers for him and he wasn't in the plans of Nuno E Santos . I stand to be corrected but I think a club can sign a player, like Aurier ,who is 'free' at anytime.

Another late, late signing...to join Chelsea .. was Saul Niguez (central mid-fielder) who moved to Chelsea on a season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

I'll need to check out the Spurs incoming players...ie their pedigree.

The best Liverpool could do was to announce..late on... that Jordon Henderson has signed a new 4 year deal and the only import being Ibrahima Konate (defender) otherwise a very quiet window for them.

All deals during the window https://www.skysports.com/football/...indow-done-deals-august-2021-and-deadline-day

What with Ronaldo and Lukaku in the mix now ..just need Mbappe and Haarland :) it's going to make entertaining viewingI cancelled Sky when it went to £40 a month..I think it;'s about £50 a month now. NOW TV seems a better option as pay per game..about £10,I think. I have BT Sports which now also show Serie A games until 2024..so far.

PSG turned down a £154million (180 euros) offer for Mbappe from Real Madrid.

Probably because they new Madrid haven't got the money... They would want it spread over a period of time/games. That was the early Issue with Ozil at Arsenal, the deal meant that Arsenal had to pay more should he start 20 (or 25) games in the league, so he was a sub for most of his first season....

But, they lose him for nothing in 12 months - surely 50m/100m/150m now is better than nothing?

Portugal were lagging behind Ireland tonight and in the last 10 minutes Ronaldo scored two headers taking his international tally to 111..a world record.

If anyone had any doubts about his level of play when he gets to United there's the answer.

I read that PSG didn't think it was enough and want him to stay when his contract is up for renewal next year.

I found this re Real Madrid's financial situation. This is how the text is written in the article.

THE LOSS OF REVENUE RESULTING FROM COVID-19 FROM MARCH 2020 AMOUNTS TO -€300 MILLION.

THE CLUB GOES FROM HAVING A NET DEBT OF €240 MILLION IN THE 2019/20 SEASON TO €46 MILLION IN THE 2020/21 SEASON (DEBT/EBITDA RATIO 0.3X).

THE CLUB HAS EQUITY AMOUNTING TO €534 MILLION AND CASH OF €122 MILLION AS OF 30 JUNE 2021.

Manchester United are paying for Ronaldo over 5 years..I wondered why. If you understand the second paragraph fair play to you :)

Manchester United will pay the €15million transfer fee for Ronaldo over the course of five years with the additional €8million payable upon activating a number of performance related add-ons.

"This operation generates a negative economic impact of approximately € 14.0 million on the 2020/2021 financial year due to the partial write-down of the net book value of the player’s registration rights."

He also missed a penalty [they possibly shouldn't have had to begin with] and was scrappy and uninspiring for a lot of the game, so it depends what way you choose to look at it. His second goal was also after 5 mins of extra time were up. There's also a case that he could have been sent off for a punch on an Irish player [however weak it was, many players have been sent off for less] His 2 goals were tap in headers against a worn out defence to boot

Oh....I see....:D

I just heard the last ten minutes on the radio...:)

Forget that,then... :D

And yet again Southgate shows he has not learnt from previous games. Winning comfortably, Poland made I think 5 subs in the 2nd half, we made none.
Players looked tired at the end. Mount, Sterling and especially Kane. It needed fresh legs but no.
Does he know we can make changes in the game? This is why, despite all the hype, we will not win the World Cup. We have the squad but a manager with only a plan A.

Perhaps he got confused and was saving them in case of penalties.
Mind you when he does bring them on he subs them again a bit later.

Veey poor manager, said it when he was appointed amd seen nothing to change my mind.

After seeing the penalty decisions, both checked by VAR, and not given for Burnley and Southampton, I clearly have no idea what needs to done to be given a penalty in the Premier League in 2021.

Harry Kane was bloody awful yesterday. I have never understood all the hype, he's good, but not that special. However, I was expecting us to get a bit of hiding, not deliver one...

Spurs now in the bottom half of the table and below Arsenal.. Normal service has been resumed

Barely any touches (1st half) and although he tried to make up for his slip and chased back (I thought he was unlucky with the tackle which Saka still scored from) you have to question what a world class striker is doing, being 3rd furthest back outfield player?

Arsenal played well, but Spurs were not even at Championship level!

When Kane is on form, and one of the best strikers in the world, imho, ;) but, when he is off form, or coming back too far because of lack of quality and/or service behind him, as he is at the moment, then he can look awful. That said, when he drops back into midfield he can be as good a midfielder as other that are there.

Because of what happened in the Summer, with him wanting to leave, thoughts turn to whether him not moving is, and maybe having a strop, is a reason for his form atm. Not sure what excuse the rest of the team may have. ;):ROFLMAO:

They were talking on the clip I saw from Sky Sports that it may be Espirito Santo forcing them to play more defensively, against the teams normal attacking 'DNA'. Not sure about that, as even if you are playing 'against type', you can at least put a shift in, which they don't seem to be doing.

No point in starting a new thread for this question

In 10 minutes England kick off against Andorra and the ref is female as are the two assistants and the VAR operator. I'm sure when I've seen games with female refs they don't get anywhere near as much hastle as their male counterparts. It will be interesting to see but I'm sure they don't get 'mobbed'..which btw should be stopped by some kind of sanction but as so many of a team mob a ref I can't see how he/she can show a yellow card to 8 or 9 players.

She was very good. As predicted, no mobbing her. I'm not surprised though with that look she gave any player that showed any sign of dissent. Should have given a second yellow to an Andorran player but had a word with him instead.. maybe we should have more female refs.

Nice win btw and well done Jack.
