Thought we needed a current season one!

Great day today at the Abbey - Cambridge in L1 for the first time in 20 odd years! 6,500 crowd, and cant remember a league game with that atmosphere, a good 1-1 draw with Oxford in the university derby!

I was wondering about the current season and was going to ask mid-week..re Premiership, really but it's already started of course, so thanks for that.

Good to see things getting back to normal. Sounds like you had a good day.

Saw Grealish come on as a substitute for Manchester City earlier. As you'll know, they lost to Leicester 1-0 but Manchester City had several top players out injured..no De Bruyner and Phil Foden for starters. Hopefully, still out for the game against Spurs next Sunday.lol. It's the only chance we have of winning. I assume Kane will play for Spurs, too as the window doesn't close until the end of the month. They held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday..for charity and likewise, a game against Arsenal tomorrow.

First Prem. game next Friday Brentford v Arsenal

Who's up ? Norwich and Brentford.

Here are the new rules.

  • Handball law: Accidental handball in the build-up to a goal no longer an offence, but remains the case for the act of scoring or the immediate action that creates the chance
  • Offside: Definition of where the arm ends, now bottom of the armpit, for determining offside/onside position
  • Handball law: Not every contact of the ball with the hand/arm is an offence

I also heard that the linesman (Ok Asst ref..lol) won't let play carry on when there's an obvious offside.

New managers:

  • Spurs – Nuno Espirito Santo
  • Everton – Rafa Benitez
  • Crystal Palace – Patrick Vieira
  • Wolves– Bruno Lage

Should anyone be interested ? here are the details of Leicester City's King Power Stadium development. Includes a video narrated bt Gary Lineker.

There is a reference to their new training ground, that is now fully operational. LCFC new training complex.

Leicester must be mentioned as peoples "2nd team" in most conversations about the EPL. Such a great club, with some history, and not buying their way to the top. I think that's why people like to see them do well. Such a different approach than the top 3 or 4 clubs.

Thanks Steve, nice words.

So difficult to break into the top echelon of the Premier league. The vast majority of 'non-aligned' football fans are only interested in the 'top six' and the media fuels this
with their biased reporting.

My daily newspaper (the 'I' ) had a report on monday about the Charity Cup final (for anyone who missed it, Leicester beat Man city. They wrote about Pep's thoughts on the match
and Pep waxing lyrical about how well his young players did. No mention of Leicester or the result ? now I know this is 'old news' saturday > monday ! but really ? . . . .

Has always been thus. Jan 1st next year will be 30 years since Man Utd 1-4 QPR. We played Utd off the park that day but all you heard in the media the following day was 'what happened to Utd?' and 'Inquest into defeat at Old Trafford'.

I was watching the excellent Brentford v Arsenal game last night, and the commentator said Brentford were the 50th team into the Premier League since it started! :$ No way would I have thought the number was above mid 30's, never mind 50. More than half the 92+ English League teams have been on the Premier League. Who'd have thunk it! Not me.

WTF Arsenal are doing there I'll never know, played like a bunch of schoolboys last night.

However, on the way back from seeing my lad today we stopped at Bradford Upon Avon for a coffee. There were two blokes taking the p*** out of Arsenal, and I realised it was the owner and the chef. I paid the bill, and as I walked past them to leave I asked "Which Premier League club has a gold PL trophy?" They smiled, the chef saying "You got us there..."

My work was done :giggle:

I'm having a job working that one out. I know there are only 6 teams that were there at the start and have never been relegated, but 50 have been there?? Mind you, some of them don't exist or are not in the football league any more.

This is a good read....

Arsenal were a joke. Not sure why Leno was getting the blame on sky. Saka just let his man run in for the goal.
Arteta needs to go.

As I said when, it seemed, everyone was calling for Wenger to go, be careful what you wish for. ;) Arsenal fans were unhappy with 'only' getting in the Champions League every season! :$

Seriously though, who do they replace him with, and how long would they get until it starts again with calls to change!

That's a very good point. But, if Viera was available at the end of last season why not bring him back. I'm convinced he could talk Bergkamp or Henry into being part of the set up, and the one thing they have is they know how to win.

I get the feeling that at the very top of the Arsenal board they don't really care.....

I'd want Viera to prove he is good enough for a top PL team before going down the ex player route for manager. You can have all the will to win in the world, but if you can't get that into your players it counts for nothing but frustration. I would want the best manager available over a former player, unless that player has proved himself as a manager. Lampard was 'seemingly' that, but it didn't work out. I would think that the people at the top would want a successful team, as it suits everyone connected. It is whether they have the will (finances), the football knowledge, and the patience to see a decision through (give time). If it were easy, everyone would be equal. ;)

I think Crystal Palace results may be of interest to Arsenal fans this season. ;)

But there are very few decent managers with a good EPL record available. Heck, at the end of last season I was willing to take the fat waiter from Everton.....

Wenger stayed too long and the apathy of his team is still in the club. We should have got rid when Klopp left Dortumnd and put him in charge.

We need a good up and coming manager, like Thomas Frank, or even Nagglesman. Sure there are others out there. I always like Howe too.

We dont need one with EPL experience - the best managers do well regardless.

I can't imagine Klopp having any connection with the fans at Arsenal.
He enjoyed that relationship at Dortmund and does even more so at Liverpool.

Hang on, I thought you were a Cambridge United supporter?

Arsenal are my PL team - fan of both, Arsenal as a kid and then United from my teens when moved here

Not talking about necessarily EPL experience, but success at least in another country(s) over a number of years should be a minimum imho. Arteta seems to have got the job because he was a coach at a successful team, and of course a former player. Not sure that is a good CV for a 'top six' team.

Being a former player can help and hinder. They get a grace period when results are bad, and will probably get longer if bad results persist, or if there is little evidence of improvement over the previous manager, which could be good if things improve. But that may also delay decisive change if results warrant it. Not sure where Arteta is in that, but looking as an outsider, Viera, Henry, or whomever from Arsenal's past, may not be what is needed, experience wise, to turn Arsenal around. Not sure who would be though. ;)

Things don't seem to be going smoothly, so far, for Nagelsmann at Bayern. Nothing is guaranteed whenever a team gets new manager, even if they seem to be the 'perfect' fit.

How about that tactical genius in a waistcoat.
Expecting him to be available after a poor World Cup showing

Klopp was taking a year off after Dortmund, and has said it was only because it was Liverpool that came asking that he cut his time off short. Thankfully he did. :D I think Klopp and Liverpool are a perfect fit with manager and fans. I dread to think what happens, and who takes over when he leaves. :$ Don't think about it now, live in the moment, and just enjoy the ride. ;)

I can only think of someone with the initials SG being his successor

They could do worse, but international management is a lot different to day to day club management, so it would be another gamble. Can't think of anyone who has started as an international manager and transitioned successfully into club management. I'm sure there must be an obvious one I can't think of. International management has normally been for the older, more experienced managers towards the end of their careers.

If the wastcoated one has a good World Cup, if he wants club management, he may have better options that Arsenal open up. ;)

That is the blinkered thinking, again yearning for a former player, that may not see the best person in the job. I have been very impressed with what he has done in Scotland, and hopefully that continues, even after a rocky start in the Champions League this season, as that would at least give him a good CV to be worthy of the job, rather than just having previously worn the shirt.

I'd like decisions made nearer the time, rather than pencilling someone in years in advance. Get the best, and most suited, at the time when the decision has to be made. :)

It has to be said, I was a fan of Gerrard as a player, a legend for Liverpool, only behind 'the King' imho, but not as a person, or his personality, from the little I have seen over the years. Not sure why, just something I don't like. Not that I have to like the players or managers who represent my club as long as they do their jobs. ;)

So..Kane stays at Spurs.

Despite the abundance of betting ads on TalkSport it's a very informative programme re football..Jim White/ Simon Jordon are very good. Jordon has an immensely sharp brain re stats and business acumen. Well, he is a businessman.. and later in the day Alan Brazil/Ally McCoist.

A couple of times during the day they have a chap on from Paddy Power Betting giving odds on any aspect of football you could imagine and an Irishman came on with the odds re Arsenal.

Arteta to go....8/11

To be beat Manchester City this coming Saturday (1230) 10/1.

To be in the bottom half of the table at the end of the season..33/1.... or as he said... Torty-tree to one. :)

Just take a look at what bets are available. https://www.paddypower.com/football/english-premier-league/man-city-v-arsenal-30800556

They've missed out .. 'What will De Bruyne have for breakfast ? Fruit...eggs/bacon 5/2 ..fruit juice followed by scrambled eggs..2/7 ..An open sandwich, cheese or salami with egg. .'cos he's Belgian.. 8/11 same odds that Artete goes :)

I heard some of the West Brom game earlier. Arsenal won 6-0.

Not sure if that was a very poor West Brom, or Arsenal getting back together, it was PEA's first game this season, and he bagged a hat trick...

I think WBA changed nearly their whole team, and Arsenal put out their best team possible. Usually the other way round as the Premier League team put out a 'weakened' side in the League Cup early rounds at least.

Arsenal are up against Cit€h in the early game on Saturday, and while I don't necessarily expect them to win, they should go into the game with confidence, and will hopefully put on a better showing than what they have so far.

As redhed points out West Brom made 11 changes. They've been hit with Covid so I assume that played a part.

Man Utd in talks with Ronaldo.

I've long thought he would end his career back at United.

From what I've seen, Utd look bloody good this season. I know it's early, but they have looked very clinical.

or as he said... Torty-tree to one. :)

This reminds me of when we were staying with a bunch of UK families in St. Louis about a decade back, we all got on great but they'd try that lame 'say 'thirty three and a third' - thinking I'd say it as 'Turty tree and a turd' but I reversed it and would say 'Firty Free and a Furd' ... like people from England do :P Also my name's not 'Keef'! :ROFLMAO:

Damn, without more details though, I'd wait to hear a lot more before judging.

I'm not judging anyone, that is what courts are for, just highlighting the story.
I didn't say you were, I meant in general. In fact I said "I'd" - just person view. I just quoted your post for the story

Trouble is, many people will have judged already. If he is found not guilty he will still have that hanging over him.

Indeed, a good friend's ex made up stuff about him sexually assaulting her, only we were in France on our bikes watching the final race of the WSB at the time. But it was in the local rag before the charges were dropped, and he he lost his job because of it.

Trouble is, many people will have judged already. If he is found not guilty he will still have that hanging over him.

That's what I was thinking, if this is just another money grabbing chancer, this could ruin his career if innocent. Obviously if he is actually guilty, and there's sufficient evidence to prove it, then I hope he gets what's coming to him ... but the story is too vague to even judge atm, which is what I meant in my earlier post

Blimey, Arsenal bottom of the premier league after 3 gams. How much longer is Arteta going to last?

Not just bottom, but 0-9 over 3 games, has to be one of the worst starts for any team in the Premier?
