The 2014 Season F1 Thread

Ah but gaz, we were talking driver tantrums :)

Hamilton is by far the best racer, alonso possibly the most complete driver. Vettel is getting outclassed this year by Ricardo, as the car is raw and he doesn't like that, can't find the balance. Hamilton has been good for nico, really pulled his talent out.

Whoever said f1 is boring.

Monaco was definitely the high point of boring this year!

I think the Hamilton Rosberg thing has been going on much longer than we know about. I think that "friendly" close racing earlier in the season wasn't as friendly as we were lead to believe....wouldn't surprise me if more doesn't come out about them each doing different things they maybe shouldn't to try and get ahead of the other.

Lewis can appear to be a bit of a "cry baby" but I think he must have been told or seen something to be this p***ed off about it....and he is the only one (apart from Nico) who knows how the car was handling at that bit of track and if doing what Nico did would cause or correct a problem.

At least it keeps a bit of interest up hey!?

Even if Lewis knows that Nico is/was cheating, publicly he must rise above it otherwise he comes across as a bad loser and could be thought of as playing his own team offside. The Germans will take a dim view and support will gravitate (even further perhaps) towards Nico. It's clear that they both want to win the championship and will do their utmost to beat the other. The name on the trophy doesn't come with a sportsmanship qualification.

There were a few times nico braked late and locked up in the same place during the race, yet he made the corner each time!

So he wasn't on a banzai, balls out qualifying lap then ;)

dont think he was on the lap he cocked up either! :D

Nico Rosberg’s win at Monaco means he has now equalled father Keke’s win total.

This was Mercedes’ tenth one-two, half of which have come in the last five races. The last team to score one-twos in five consecutive races were Ferrari in the 2002 Hungarian, Belgian, Italian, United States and Japanese Grands Prix.

Ninth place for Jules Bianchi meant he scored Marussia’s first points in their 45th race since the Russian-backed team’s first race in 2012. Prior to that they started 38 point-less races as Virgin.

That leaves Caterham the only team in F1 today which has never scored a point. Like Marussia, they changed their identity in 2012 having competed in the previous two seasons as Lotus. If they fail to score a point in the next 11 races they will equal HRT’s record of most starts without a point.

Valtteri Bottas’s power unit failure meant he failed to score a point in a race for the first time this year, leaving Rosberg, Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg the only drivers who have scored at every round.

Mercedes extended their streak of leading every lap of the season so far. They are the first team to lead every lap of the first six races since McLaren in 1988, who didn’t fail to lead a lap until the start of round eight at Silverstone.

Thanks as always Kev. Top job.

Glad that Filipe and Sergio seem to be OK. Disappointed for Lewis, two DNFs due to car failures... Pleased for Danny, great drive, the boy has talent. Looks like Chiltern ran out of talent, not that he has much IMHO.

So, an interesting race for a change..

They just said that Filipe's car experienced 27G..... Ouch!

Best finish I've seen for a long time. Glad both drivers were unhurt.
Brilliant points addition for Red Bull.
Hamilton hahahahahahahahahaha

Intresting race I dont know how well it bodes for future events
It prooved Red bull are a match for ailing mercedes
massa and perez found Brake by wire and ers torque should be kept seperate
If Chilton wants to power slide he should stop on another teams car
Ferrari are are still straw clutching and The ice man dosnt like this car as much as he didnt like the Lotus Was it steering that was the problem?
Force india were really shining from a mid team to challenging the top teams Its nice to see an under dog turning up the heat

red Bull have made sure Newey dosnt go to any other team
He maybe frustrated with F1 but as the head of the new tech center he will be able to build yachts planes or any damn thing he fancies
canny move

Chilton put the power on too early but Max's marrussia broke up to easily?
Rosberg drove brilliantly with limited rear brakes, but then he move brake bias fully forward and was driving mostly with front brakes only. Hamilton did the same but a lap later and that was possibly the difference?

Great first win by Ricardo, again showing vettel the way

Interesting for the wrong reasons. Very glad that the crashers (and crashes) seem to have survived unharmed (if a little shaken!) Well done DR for breaking the Merc monopoly on wins so far this season and even more so for beating his team mate! To be fair to SV, he seemed genuinely pleased for DR on the podium.

Hoping I can find the next one while we're away - pretty sure the poofball isn't going to get in the way since the matches seem to be on later in the day. (TBH, I'll be more happy to avoid the poofball than I will be to see the GP!)

How about 'Venture'?

A totally nothing-to-do with photography name that could catch on?

Just pick something distinctive, doesn't have to relate to the subject i.e. Venture. Treat it as a brand and make it stand for something (perhaps not - nice photography ludicrously expensive - though)

As you can see by my web name - I've not yet come up with one either! So for now, 'MD Photography' would be fine - 'Prints Charming' = not for me
Same here which is unusual for me :-)

I think this sums up the state of management within Ferrari and possably why they are building slower cars
In relation to going into sports car racing

Montezemolo told the Wall Street Journal: "Of course, we cannot do sports car racing and formula one. It's not possible."
The Ferrari website post, however, said Ferrari can juggle both Le Mans and F1, insisting "there's nothing to stop Ferrari upping the ante and competing in both disciplines".

Another negative talk down of F1 I wonder why the audiances are declining when the teams say I am leaving or its not F1
The move to pay tv was the start
Now all you hear is the new regs are killing the sport But we have seen good racing which in some years would have been brilliant
Say something is crap long enough and thats what it will become

The reports that Ferrari and Red Bull are thinking of trying to buy F1 can have nothing to do with them bad mouthing and making it boring over the past few years, can they?

On Barso's report above, I saw this on the Guardian's page. Hope MS makes a good recovery, however slight the chances of that are after such a long period of coma. The brain is a weird and wonderful organ, so nobody can know what'll happen. I really hope he makes a full recovery but failing that, I hope he has a good life rather than an existence of sorts. I also hope he's allowed to recover in peace as requested by the family, without him (and them) being hounded for answers by the press. (I have to admit that when I saw the photo of him on the site. I was a little hesitant to click on the story in case it was a report of his death. SO glad it was better news than that!)

Indeed, but the fact that he's out of the coma is progress - slight as that may be.

Having come out the far side of a brain tumour (as the OT lady put it, a gross insult to the brain) and having seen Mum degenerating after a subarachnoid haemorrhage, I know what can happen. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be relatively unscathed by my experience and truly hope that MS has as good a recovery as I did (an am still having nearly 2 years after the operation). Only time will tell and hopefully the family will see fit to keep us informed from time to time.

Maybe not be as good as it sounds - http://formerf1doc.wordpress.com/2014/06/16/good-news/ - but hopefully it is.
Just read through the post and the comments . The recent reports from Bild.de and other influential medics seemed to paint a grim outlook with no response from the official channel.
Today we have a press release, the first since April stating what Sabine said, take it with a pinch of salt maybe? Reading through the comments after Gary's post you can't help to fear the worst (I hope I am wrong) but things don't seem to be painted as good as the statement sounded.

More interesting replies to Gary's post seem to paint a mixed picture, no doubt this will rumble on for some time to come.

Daniel Ricciardo became the 105th driver to win a round of the world championship with his victory in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Fastest lap went to Felipe Massa for the first time since the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix. The last Williams driver to set fastest lap was Bruno Senna in the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix.

The Williams pair took fourth and fifth on the grid, which was the team’s best combined qualifying performance since the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix, when Nico Hulkenberg qualified on pole position and Rubens Barrichello lined up sixth.

While Ferrari marked Kimi Raikkonen’s 200th ‘race start’, it was in fact his 199th. Raikkonen has participated in 201 grands prix, but withdrew before the start of the 2005 United States Grand Prix as did all the other drivers on Michelin tyres. And although he took part in the original start of the 2001 Belgian Grand Prix, that race was later abandoned due to a red flag, and Raikkonen did not take part in the new race.

Max Chilton’s record of being classified in every race he had started finally came to an end following his first-lap collision with team mate Jules Bianchi. Chilton was classified in his first 25 starts, beating the previous record of 16 set by Tiago Monteiro in 2005.

Only 6 drivers on the current grid have raced at the A1-Ring. Button, Alonso, Raikkonen, Massa, Magnussen and Kvyat.

Only 3 of the last 7 F1 events here have been won by a non-pole driver.

Thanks for that, as always, Kev :)

Forgot how they used to go clean off the track in the first corner, wonder if they will still allow them to do that....I am guessing not.

Really do like this track, don't know why...think it might be because it was one of the first I ever "learnt" playing Toca World Touring Cars of the PSX (back when it was the A1 Ring).

I agree, don't think they'll be allowed to leave the track like that without getting a warning/penalty.
Did the rule get changed last year closing the loophole where they could leave the track on the outside as they were not considered to 'gain an advantage' despite getting on the power earlier? I can't remember which track it was but there was a bit of astro turf on the outside that everyone went across.

We've seen track limits enforced this year so I bet this will be the same this weekend

I think the "dont gain an advantage" rule is still in place, hence all the 'upset' when Rosberg straight lined the chicane the other weekend and kept ahead of Lewis...seemingly gaining an advantage, but not punished for it. I guess they will have one of the FIA "rules of fact" on that first corner to decide who gains an advantage and who doesn't. Certainly going to be a lot running over there on the first lap, I would imagine, the early acceleration up that hill while claiming you were pushed wide could work well in someones favour.

Good, Perez deserves that. Massa was much faster, he moved over when massa made his move past and is lucky to only get a 5 place penalty. I'd mark his licence.

Good to see Williams doing well, might actually see them giving the Mercs a run....somehow I don't think they will finish as well and could struggle with tires if they are heating up as quick as it seems. Should be an interesting race.

On this circuit massa could find himself behind perez at some point and that should make him think

Never really paid much attention to this track but the actual size of it is tiny! At least there is some good straits this time and it should make for some good overtaking opportunities. Which i suppose is a good thing seeing as Hamilton is 9th!! I doubt the Williams will be there at the end of the race, they were miles behind on the soft tyres. Maybe race trim will see that change though.
