The 2014 Season F1 Thread

Well thats high tech
By the look of it club and dolly made by an apprentice
I think that now Bernie is facing porridge the sound issue has all but bitten the dust plus the teams have to agree to mods like this and them agreeing on anything is nigh on impossable

I honestly don't see what they can do to make things louder, they've got a small V6 plus a turbo and due to fuel restrictions they are not using fuel to cool the turbo or produce an anti-lag.......the MGU-H does that. The engines are capped at 15,000RPM but whilst watching the on screen graphics during Sunday's race the cars appeared to shifting between 10,700 and 11,200 RPM a long way from last years 18,000 and the previous V10's that touched 20,000. I suppose this is just the quiter new energy saving F1 that we have to get used to.

But they are top end faster and soon lap quicker whilst using less juice than the V8's
somwhere along the way that has got to be good for the motoring public

:plusone:

The cars are faster and more efficient, due (at least in part) to the reclamation of as much previously wasted energy as possible - mainly noise! A good side effect of this may be that the current crop of new mechanics will be able to retire with their hearing intact...

I was talking to an F1 mechanic the other day. For the first fireup of the V6, once the engine was started, the mechanics looked at each other, removed their ear plugs and carried on working - so he said.

The thing is I dont think the tv audiance (the ones that the advertising people want) unless they went to an event, would know what a V8 sounded like as thay turn the trackside down on tv so someone can be heard prattling
Who for Monarco ? Downforce not a problem Max power not that much of a problem If lewis or Nico dont perch on grid 1 after qually then its open season on the mercs

Anyone that follows F1 knows the name Brabham
if you wish to see a potted history of his life its here on Joe Seawards blog

When I was a kid, Black Jack was my hero - probably because he was then in his 40s and easily old enough to be my dad and still winning Formula 1 Grands Prix!

I was very saddened, although not surprised, to read of his death this morning although FWIW, I nearly watched him shuffle off this mortal coil in late 1970 after he had retired from driving. I persuaded my real dad to take me to Brands Hatch to watch a Jack Brabham tribute meeting. One of the races was for Brabham cars which he flagged away. Before the race, he had the starting gantry moved back a few yards from where the organisers had positioned it and lo and behold a car got sideways off the grid and brushed against the gantry and the great man, even in its safer position!

There have been some lovely and deserved tributes today including a very good 1999 Adam Cooper [not Mark Hughes] interview on MotorSport where Brabham says the quickest guys he raced against were Moss and Jochen Rindt, not Jim Clark nor any other Scotsman!

As well as RIP, I don't think it's inappropriate for me to say "Viva Brabham"!

Was this part of it? I'd have loved to have seen this live.

It must have been an honour to have a go faster kit by Vauxhall to be named after Sir jack
Off hand I cant think of any other car/kit named after an F1 driver but I expect there will be

Wonderful video Nilagin
There were some names racing there for racings sake
It was wonderful to hear a proper commentry and I am sure a mexico isnt as loud as todays F1 cars but they sounded so
Surely the recoding equipment hasnt deterioated over time so whats wrong with the BBC equipment today

No! FWIW that was at the Jackie Stewart World Championship Victory Race a year later and I would not have wanted to have seen that live - that was the day when a huge pall of smoke over the trees out the back of the circuit announced Jo Siffert's horrible death :(

BTW, full marks Fuzzy for recognising my obscure little joke! Although I don't think it was so much an honour from Vauxhall Motors as the fact that Brabham owned a couple of Vauxhall dealerships and created the tuning kit which his company sold ;)

Which took between eight hours and three days! A friend of mine who has just quit one of the biggest F1 teams for another, told me in disparaging terms how much trouble had gone through, trying to get the 2014 car to fire up for the first time.
Then at the TP Mega Meet I found myself talking to a TP member who works for another F1 team - cos TP attracts some of the right people! [Hi "P" - no other names or pack drill ;) ]. He told me something of the troubles they'd had and how one team had worked solidly for three days before they could get the installed "power system" to fire up! The new three part power systems are bloody complicated and it's impressive how much the teams have learned since February when literally none of them had the first idea what they had to do next

And because of that some teams could be getting grid drops at the back end of the year as they run out of the allotted number of power units or bits there of

Must have been some appreciation from Vauxhall as the kit didnt invalidate the warrenty and it was a tad more than a go faster stripe like twin carbs

Lewis Hamilton has now won every race on the calendar at least once apart from the Brazilian Grand Prix and this year’s new venues. Vettel also needs one more win to complete a clean sweep. He is yet to win in Hungary.

Victory in the Spanish Grand Prix meant Lewis Hamilton became the 13th driver to win four races in a row.

Three other drivers on the grid have also achieved that feat: Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton is now eighth on the all-time list of race winners and needs one more win to equal Jackie Stewart’s tally of 27.

Hamilton also picked up his 35th pole position and now leads the drivers’ championship for the first time since the 2012 Canadian Grand Prix.

Mercedes have taken pole, won and led every lap of every race so far this season.

Only three drivers in the field have completed every racing lap this year: Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas.

Alonso and Ferrari have now a year without winning a race. During that time only Vettel, Hamilton and Rosberg have claimed victories.

Penalty points so far
Jules Bianchi 4
Pastor Maldonado 4
Valtteri Bottas 2
Kevin Magnussen 2
Adrian Sutil 2

So they are circulating Monaco and already the Mercs are apparently looking good
this will be sickening for Ferrari and red bull as they reckoned the advantage of the Mercs would be curtailed here as down force and torque could work against them or at least work in ferrari/red bull favour

Ferraris and Bulls weren't looking too shabby in practise two. Ferrari seemed like a handful but Alonso was taming it as always....think he might sneak a good grid spot if he gets a clean lap.

Red Bull ordered to change design part in another attempt at bending the rules.

Red Bull forced to change camera slot

Red Bull have had to change the design of the front camera pods on its RB10 from this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix onwards following clarification from the FIA.

Since the opening race of the season Red Bull has run the mandatory front-facing camera inside the nose of the car, rather than externally as all the other teams do. Red Bull argued the rules do not state that cameras have to be positioned on the outside of the car.

Positioning the camera inside the nose delivered a small aerodynamic benefit as it caused less interference with the airflow, and initially the team was allowed to stick with its interpretation for the first five races.

A small tweak was necessary in Spain, with the camera jutting out of the nose slightly so the camera lens could be in view, before the FIA stepped in ahead of the race at Monaco. The FIA cites Article 20.3.4 of its technical regulations, which states that cameras must lie within a box formed by "two vertical lines 150mm and 450mm forward of the front wheel centre line and two horizontal lines 325mm and 525mm above the reference plane."http://en.espnf1.com

The fact it ran for 5 races probably meant it was legal but not what the rules meant
I reckon the fact it was a restricted view and no rear view that was transmitted back was the crucial point, They need to keep an eye on red bull and what red bull is up to

It seems this is the second enforced move and that Red Bull didn't quite comply with the directive earlier in the season and let to the authorities deciding a redesigned camera at the Spanish GP still didn't comply..

A different report.

From GMM
Red Bull must redesign the nose of its car, after Adrian Newey exploited a loophole in the 2014 rules.

Keen-eyed observers noticed throughout the winter and again when the race season began that the RB10 did not have the mandatory camera mountings installed as per normal.

A closer look at the nose revealed that a tiny hole for the television camera lens had been cut between the 'Casio' and 'Pirelli' logos in the nose.
The rules say the mountings must not be located inside the carbon structure itself, but Newey's loophole is that the camera was in fact inside the non-structural 'vanity panel' introduced last year to hide the unseemly nose steps.

But while it satisfied the actual wording of the rules, commercial rights holder Formula One Management was less happy with the Red Bull trick.

It meant FOM could no longer use the Red Bull nose camera for a rearward-facing view.

And Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that the Bernie Ecclestone-led company was also unhappy with the front view, moving Red Bull to improve the 'hole in the nose' ahead of the recent Spanish grand prix.

But Ecclestone reportedly remained unhappy even with the Barcelona solution.
So from Monaco this weekend, the RB10 will be fitted with the standard FIA mountings on the outside of the nose structure, as per the other teams in 2014 like Ferrari and Mercedes.

which is what I was saying no one trusts Red Bull
Exactly what Bernie has to do with the technical regulations is another thing altogether though
Saying that will it be teflon Eccelstone or Mr bridger Eccelstone running ALL F1 in the future

I don't really understand the camera thing. The teams should just be handed the camera module(s) and told to fit it to the car, end of discussion.

Ive just looked at the regs
Reg 20.3.1
All cars must be equipped with five positions in which cameras or camera housings can be fitted. Referring to Drawing 6, all cars must carry (i) a camera in position 4 and (ii) a camera or camera housing in positions 2 (both sides), 3 and either 1 or 5.(1 where they will be now 5 under the vanity cover)
Any decision as to whether a camera or camera housing is fitted in those positions will be by agreement between the relevant Competitor and the Commercial Rights Holder.
So there you have why Bernie can have a say

The Fia dosnt buy anything the teams do The fia state (as in the case of the fuel sensors) what you must have and where to fit them or rather where you cant fit them which leaves the door open to interpretation

If the race ends up anywhere near as interesting as the GP2 race that just finished then it will be excellent.

:agree: The two hours I spent, watching the supposedly one hour GP2 race was time well filled! It was superb fun and there was some superb motor racing!

And in answer to Will Buxton's commentary; Monte Carlo does not have a brewery and I'd prefer to fight the ten duck-sized horses! ;) You don't get that on the Grand Prix!! :)

Was looking forward to seeing Lewis and Nico go head to head in qualifying but just seen it's NOT LIVE on the BBC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Guess Bernie wanted too much money for the Moncao live coverage

Just listened to this

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/27461427

and totally agree, one of the best races for spectacle (if not actual racing) on the calendar.

D

I don't want to watch specticle though I would much rather see a race.

Me too, only seen one so far this season, albeit the best race for many a long year!

The race choices are selected by the BBC and Sky. If I remember rightly, last year, the BBC got first choice so maybe this year Sky got to go first and bagged Monaco.
It was something like BBC got first track choice, then sky, then BBC got to choose 3 more, then sky 3, and so on but BBC weren't allowed 3 consecutive live races. That gave Sky a chance to have some showcase races over the BBC.
