The 2014 Season F1 Thread

Good race though
Saw it on poormans tele even with a clipped race and ben Edwards (although the cars sounded louder and he sounded softer)it was still a brilliant race

Got to agree on the sound, the ambient was just a touch quieter than Edwards prattle. Looks like they have been tweaking to the needs of the tv audience.
Btw I watched the race live.......but I don't have sky, another option in the mix for live viewing.

Would that be a german version ?

Hardly a surprise. I bet he thinks all the GP's that Vettel won by a country mile were exciting?

Yep, Vettel out front and 50 laps of scalextrics type round and round with the odd "Multi21" thrown in.

If Renault cannot improve its engine, Mercedes will run away with the 2014 title.
That is the warning of Dr Helmut Marko, an outspoken director of the Renault-powered reigning world champions Red Bull.

No sh1t sherlock
Does this guy ever shut up

Not sure what Renault can do to get more power. Mercedes have come up with a neat step-out in turbo technology. The others will need a season to replicate it.

Red Bull have been the dominant team for the last few seasons. They should understand that they were not going to be able to stay there forever and suck it up. They are sounding like a bunch of sore losers right now.

And what of the outcome at Monday's hearing, Red Bull have already spat their dummy out, thrown the toys out of the pram......so what's left to do if they lose?
On the other hand if the hearing goes in their favour......???

It appears not only to be the split turbo, although that has led to better aero dynamics
But the relation between the energy recovery systems in particular the way they are bypassing the storage bit and interacting between the turbo and the kers This is where all the extra horse power lies in the electronics and how it can be put down onto the track
Some new blood on the grid from next season.....

Hass just needs an engine now Will it be a merc or a Ferrari or a Honda or a cosworth they have all been mentioned with reasonable reasons
Forza Rossa is being looked into as another team for 2015/2016 appears to be connected with the old HRT
But if the rumours that Force india and Marussa have backing problems then there may be a way in by buying a whole team for someone else like porsche maybe, but that might just be pipe dreams

I don't know for a fact because I haven't seen the sums, but if wouldn't be surprised if there was also a thermodynamic efficiency gain by physically moving the heat of the turbine away from the compresor.

As far as is known the incoming charge is cooler because it is not subjected to the heat of the exhaust therfore the intercooler dosnt need to be as big and as this is in the side pods it means the side pods can be smaller and shaped better for aero But i bet there is a whole heap of other benifits as well

A guy on the Sky coverage at the weekend explained that since the gases had far less distance to travel, the turbo lag was significantly reduced as the pressure was much quicker to build up.....or something like that.

Almost made sense to even my tiny mind.

I would agree with that in a normal turbo engine except there is now the electric side of things the ers and mgu-k can spin up the turbo in place of the exhaust gases which will for all intended purposes eliminate lag

Yes, I believe this is called e-boosting, which is effectively an electrical supercharger. If you're carrying the weight for harvesting anyway, why not make use for boosting.

wonder what the outcome will be today for the Ricardo affair
Suspect a compramise
wouldnt be suprised to see Ricardo re instated and the team fined
got to keep red bulls hopes alive

I hope not. Blatently ignored Charile Whiting and went their own way, which would open a bigger can of worms.
Looks like they've carried on also with their fueling method, which is why they suddenly became competitive?

According to twitter,

Apparently...

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has resigned

Unconfirmed yet though.

I understand that one more of the benefits of splitting the turbo and moving the heat path to the front of the engine means that the gearbox can now sit closer to the engine as less cooling is required, therefore the mass can be closer to the CoG of the car. This, coupled with the smaller side pods is what is giving the majority of the gain that is being seen... apparently.

Wondering if Whitmarsh will be heading for Ferrari.....it's a long shot, but stranger things have happened in F1!!

Typical Ferrari blame someone not their system
If you want to know who Marco Mattiacci is Joe seaward has a piece on him in his blog
http://joeblogsf1.com/
sounds like the merc lawyer in Paris is mouthing that the penalty that Ricardo got could be increased, that would be a suprise

Well said...

"We are, frankly, and with great respect, concerned that Red Bull have shown such a flagrant and deliberate disregard for these rules that there is a real risk they will do it again," said Harris in his closing statement.

"We are here to seek to ensure that that does not happen, we must have a level playing field going forward for the remainder of the season.

"We apprehend that the other teams represented here today [Lotus, Williams, McLaren and Force India] take the same view, which is why they are here today.

"We respectfully submit that the most effective way to ensure that Red Bull do not flount further instructions from the FIA is for this court to recognise the severity of their infringement and to impose a further sanction upon them which is to be suspended for the rest of the season, so that they are acutely aware."

Montezemolo insisted: "I have decided to focus on a young manager that I believe in a lot.
"I have heard and read many misplaced comments, for example that Mattiacci is not an engineer. But we are all Ferrari engineers.

Spoken like a true X factor contestant I wonder what is wrong at Ferrari if this is there standard of engineers a touch of two many cooks me thinks

Nice work Kevin

Ricardo said about the penalty
"It's disappointing not to get the 18 points from Australia," he said on Wednesday, "but if anything it gives me more motivation to get back on the podium as soon as possible.
Spoken like a true sportsman
Marko said
"We cannot say any more until we get the detailed reasons for the judgement, but what amazed us even more was the language and aggressiveness that our competitor Mercedes used to argue against us," he is quoted by Austria's Kleine Zeitung newspaper.
He just has no idea what red bull have just done to themselves or why others may consider them nothing more than cheats

According to F1 Times "The likes of Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet and Martin Brundle might soon be taking to the Formula 1 circuits after Bernie Ecclestone revealed there are plans to launch a historic masters series.". No mention that this has been tried before (anyone else remember GP Masters?). Last time it wasn't a success, but maybe with Bernie's involvement things will be different.

From what I can gather Ferrari have there compressor and turbo split like merc but only half way down the v of the engine Maybe they fought shy of the 120,000 rpm connecting shaft going all the way down the heads

Maldernardo was practising crashing at shanghi practise 2 whilst entering the pit lane
looks like he is "aiming" for perfection sometime soon
