The 2014 Season F1 Thread

Just bought my tickets for the Monza GP for my stag do, can't wait!

Well we're in the process of emigrating to New Zealand and she's getting a 3 month holiday as part of that whilst I write my book. I'm thinking that can trade off with a lot of weekend trips to Melbourne over the next few years.

Some good signs coming from Michael being reported......fingers crossed this is the start of a decent recovery!!

Indeed, fingers crossed for some return to life rather than just existence for MS.

Yes, fingers crossed that he does indeed have a meaningful recovery..

So it seems the Mercedes engine is definitely imbued with magic ;), or at least a revolutionary turbo design that splits the components up and allows smaller intercoolers and a more compact engine/gearbox design.

From what's being discussed on the Sky qualifying show, it's not something any other manufacturer can copy for obvious reasons.

Writing in Motorsport magazine, Hughes discloses that Mercedes' breakthrough 'innovation is having the turbo's compressor at one end of the engine and the turbine at the other, linked by a long shaft through the vee of the engine'.

The 'trick turbo layout' triggers a series of critical performance benefits. A reduction in turbo lag means less power needs to be be harvested from the car's ERS unit to keep the turbine spooled off throttle. That in turn improves the efficiency of the car, with more power reserved for performance gain and less fuel consequentially used up.

neat idea. another of Ross Brauns ideas?

Very neat idea and obviously works quite well! Not so much thinking outside the box as in 2 separate boxes!

VERY interesting insight from Richard Hammond on MS's situation HERE.

While I was never actually in a coma, natural or induced, I went though vaguely similar stages before and after my op in Sept '12 and am still on the road to recovery. I would put myself at 95+% back to (what passes for me as) "normal" and I reckon being treated as a human rather than a number by the DVLA would drop the other 5% back into me (or at least allow me to collect it from the depot!)

The Mercedes engined cars are imperious today, watching a Force India or Williams sweeping effortlessly past a Ferrari or Red Bull is just so unlike F1 ;).

It was good to watch Hamilton and Rosberg battle it out at the front with no preference to either driver, mind you though I think the high up ones might have a little chat with them before China.

I was absolutely enthralled from turn one. Fantastic work from Lewis. Then when the safety car came out I was shouting at the television. Couldn't believe he was going to lose the race... Then thanks to some superb go-kart-esque driving he managed to hold off a rapid Nico. Just shows how far he has come and what kind of state of mind he is in for this championship. Long may it continue. :)

Excellent racing all the way through the field, nice to see Daniel finally get a half decent result after a somewhat harsh penalty on the grid. Still don't understand how an unsafe release which was recognised immediately and caused nobody else any harm warrants a 10 place grid penalty and mis-judging the first corner on cold tyres and flipping another race car over and causing serious damage to it and potential severe injuries to both parties only warrants a 5 place drop? (Yes I know about the 3 points aswell) seems silly, not like he's been a squeaky clean driver all his career.

Roll on China in a fortnight!! :D

Hopefully have the race recorded, so will watch when I get back to Blighty at the weekend.

At last, real proper racing this year, excellent stuff!

f1 is back best race ive seen for a long time and lewis hamilton was brilliant hope the next race is as good

This race wont have helped Bernie's mission
Fuel limits rubbish Tyre degregation rubbish Noise rubbish, forget them, good all out racing is good racing
Roll on China

Plus a ten sec stop go
He collected 3 penalties for one incident
He still thinks it was someone else's fault
Speaking after the race, Maldonado said he was a bit uncertain as to how the incident unfolded.
"We will need to have a look again at what happened as Esteban seemed to be off his line coming into turn one - maybe he missed his braking point, I don't know - and by then I was in the corner with nowhere to go," he said.

Just how many points does he need for a total ban and how quick can he collect them

Apart from the odd squeaky result Maldonado has done little to show that he should be on an F1 grid... Frank did well to let him go..

Fuzzyedges, yes, he got a 10 second stop go but so did Daniel...

According to the papers Bernie is trying to buy f1 back although he denied it in the interview with Martin Brundle yesterday. Does make sense to call it black and blue to lower the price then buy it back for less money. ;)

Didnt see Riccardo getting one of those in bahrain he got a 10 place grid drop from the last race for a wobbly wheel but there was nothing wobbly about his performance in this race

It's not for a "wobbly wheel", it's for an unsafe release, and after the incident of the wheel (also from a sloppy Red Bull) hitting the person in the pit lane last year the punishment was implemented for this season for any unsafe release.

Any driver would have received the same punishment.

The newly-inserted Article 23.12 c of the 2014 Sporting Regulation states that "if a car is deemed to have been released in an unsafe condition during a race the driver concerned will receive a ten grid place penalty at the driver's next Event. However, if any car released in an unsafe condition is able to resume the race a penalty under Article 16.3(c) will also be imposed on the driver concerned."

Maybe they need to implement a punishment for 'idiot ploughing into another driver' also... glad he was ok though, must have been a scare. His reaction on the radio was classic.

True, I suppose they should start implementing a uniform system of punishment for serious incidents, different stewards at different courses could mean a harsher penalty at one course over another for a similar incident that causes a crash.

Yes in Malaysia...
My appology's thought we were talking bahrain

.

Wobbly wheel was the result his wheel not being fitted correctly at his pit stop and sent on his way before it was rectified hence the unsafe release I will try to be more factual in the future for those that didnt watch the race
The strict penalties have slowed the pit stops Its better now to be sure than incur massive penalties Crashing and bits falling off in the pit lane are more likly to cause serious injury to more personel than out on the track hence the massive penaltys for unsafe release

So I think we are both saying the same thing then? Punishment in line with the Regs?

Absolutly
It looks as if Bernie has found a face saver He wanted to change the lot, engine, fuel restrictions, the name and who runs F1 He pinned all that on the noise the car makes and now toddt has said as early as barcelona test will be done to make them noiser but thats it
after Bahrain the rest seems to be forgotten toddt 1 bernie nil
Get the political animals back in their cages and let the teams race and look what you get

Very unfortunate for DR to have been punished twice for something that wasn't his fault. Maybe a 25 point penalty in the WCC and a drive through would have been fairer?

Absolutely knackered after a bad night's sleep on Friday night so dropped off at 9pm last night so missed the race! Sounds like I should have necked a pint of strong coffee and watched it!

Not sure how they'll be able to increase the noise - they're reclaiming as much energy as possible at all stages so there's none left to make the noise!

I'm too tight to do that! I would pay a couple of quid per GP to see them but don't watch (or enjoy) enough sport to fork out for the package.
