The 2014 Season F1 Thread

The BBC is ruining F1 for me, their efforts to whip up a 'war' between Hamilton and Rosberg are utterly nauseating, I just can't follow any of their coverage without wanting to give the presenters a good slap.

Sky is no better! In the week when Eoin Young died, modern Formula 1 coverage is an embarrassment! David Croft, whom I liked when he was commentating on radio but whom I hate these days on Sky, spent the whole weekend's preview show trying to lead others into agreeing that the minor touch at Spa was the defining moment of the year! No they said, it was just one moment in one race of twenty! No wonder watching fans don't understand anything of what they're seeing! Equally I chanced to see the drivers' press conference from the Thursday and Alonso had to stonewall question after question about the two Mercedes teammates and his own experiences with Lewis Hamilton. Nothing more interesting or incisive was being asked!

It will all be fine once Rosberg has a couple of DNFs:p

The news is what effect will luca's depature have on Alonso I reckon not a lot
If he was thinking about leaving, which is doubtful in 2015, it might make him want to stay with the prospect of a better machine now the politics may have left as well
The question is how much does this mean to Bernie, one by one the old school big men are leaving, the big rorty engines are consigned to the history books, Technology is taking over which bernie disregards The world that Bernie knew is going Maybe he is thinking, especially after Germany, that its time to put his feet up and reminiss with his cronies
Does anybody buy that Rosberg was under pressure and made those mistakes He is a top F1 driver I would expect Lewis to be on his exhaust to make those kind of mistakes Or was it the radio that was chattering and spooking him In which case he should be better in Singapore with out the crackle or worse without a prop

I see the FIA are banning those 'how to drive' radio messages.

I think this will be a good thing if they can enforce it. Not too sure to what extent it will be, given what Charlie has said so far. No doubt some teams will be seeking clarification soon, can just see it now, Red Bull protesting against Mercedes for instructing a driver to coast to save fuel etc, 'but Charlie they said this/that etc, it's not fair' this could be hilarious!

Wonder if Red Bull will have to stop the 'beeps' telling their drivers when to change gear, or at least stop Rocky telling Vettel to 'repect the beeps' :)

I think Nico simply missed his braking point and therefore couldn't turn in. Maybe because Lewis was 0.25s or more per lap quicker. Would probably have been right up his chuff going into the Lesmo corners anyway.. Lewis carries momentum and speed much better than Nico does, which shows up in better lap times and better fuel consumption. Singapore is not really a momentum circuit, so a bit more of a leveller.

As for the radio messages, under race conditions the drivers run out of headspace to drive these complex cars. There are so many options in the car that the driver has no chance of knowing if the performance of the car in the moment is being compromised by the tyres or energy system or aero or diff setting or rear brake bias or etc...

Telling the driver where they are losing time or advising on how to put a lap together though, should be banned.

Yeh, from what Charlie has said, I think it's the 'use 5th gear at turn 4' or 'brake later into turn 6' kind of thing that the FIA are trying to get rid of.

A driver should be able to tell if the brakes are too cold/hot or the tyres are going off, they've been doing this for a while now!
Things like a slow puncture I would think would be ok to tell the driver.

Hopefully Sky/BBC or someone will provide a list of what is or isn't allowed any more.

How about things like:
Fuel/engine mode - maybe inform the driver they are above or below target fuel use and let them decide which engine mode to use, could see a few have to really back off in the last lap or so like the old turbo days :D
Use of the 'overtake button' - is that telling them how to drive or letting them know that tool is available.
Suggesting where to deploy KERS etc to defend/attack - would guess that's a no no.
When to push - that would be strategy so could be ok.
The beeps for gear change/optimal rev for fuel etc - I would say that'd be out too.

Sure there's loads more examples but until the next race I guess we'll be in the dark a little (see what I did there :))

From what ive read Its the article 20.1 which says you drive the car unaided and 8.5.2 transmission of data from pit to car is forbiden, the screens wont be so lit up then
It will be badly written as usual and will probably cause more confusion than intention

Codes will become the norm The technology is there and it wont go away
We will probably hear magic button 44 0.1 dont panic nico

All that will happen is that functions they get the driver to do now, e.g. clutch bite point setting and so on will become automated. A few burnouts on the parade lap and the car will self learn the settings. This will cost more money to develop and will add nothing to the F1 spectacle and will place even more emphasis on the team engineers that get it more optimal than the competition. There are shift light on the dashboard already, but having an audible signal (with a very quiet engine) means the driver doesn't have to look at the dash to know when to change. Are the shift lights to disappear? How about the display on the steering wheel...

I remember talking to Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro when the diesel Audis appeared at Le Mans and they said that above 160 km/h they could not hear the engine above the wind noise, so judging gear changes on engine note was no longer possible.

Baby and bathwater... again. We've just seen a terrific race in Monza, why do they need to keep meddling.

Because the tv audiances are dwindling and the dinasaurs wish to return to the good old days when racers raced or at least thats how they remember it
So out with any advanced technology (how the engines scrapped in is a wonder, if bernie had his way they wouldnt have )
Its a team sport let the teams go for the win and we get racing like we have been having this year

First Formula E race is tomorrow morning. Doesn't seem a lot of interest yet.

Live on itv4 at 8:00 if I read the TV guide correctly.

Watching it now, the pit stops are a little longer as they don't change tyres......they change cars !

They sound like RC model cars though

The airplane/boiling kettle noise aside, I'm quite enjoying it.....there's some proper sliding about racing going on!!

Didn't watch it, may do if there's a replay later...

It's a little bit familiar, the one leading the race is called Nico.........

Quite a spectacular end to the race, Heidfeld trying out for an aerobatics team ;).

Didn't like the music or the sound of the cars but the race was ok.

Nico needs to take lessons from his F1 namesake in subtlety though. :p Ramming another car off the track was a bit much.

Strange how the name Nico and controversy seem to go together a lot these days

I'm glad other people enjoyed it! I watched open minded and open mouthed at possibly the most pathetic thing I've ever seen on a motor racing circuit ever! It's effectively indoor karting for very professional racing drivers and teams! It offers sub-Formula Ford 2000 levels of performance for only half a million euros a pop! :banghead:

As a picture of how good the start of Formula E has been, the official website seems to have crashed - not enough electricity, you see!

By the way, as for young Nicolas, of course he can manage an electric car; - he's spent the last two years racing F1 simulators ... it doesn't help prepare you for when another car comes alongside though! As for the other Nick, I wanted to visit the website to find out how much the battery buggies weigh - heavy cars make for nasty accident damage!

You never know they could be using Formula E as R&D to replace F1 in the years to come, they seem to be aiming to cut costs and reduce emissions every time they change the rules.

A race remembered only for a crash
Nico Prost gained a ten place grid drop for his move, that came straight from the Maldanardo / perez training manual including placeing the blame on Hiedfield
"I didnt expect someone of his experiance to try and overtake me at the last corner" I bet daddy gave him a few words of advice later
It did show just how good the top ten in F1 really are
Next year when all the cars wont be the same might be a bit more interesting

Daddy was more a first corner guy...

Tried to watch the Formula E race but dropped off. Did see the coming together at the last corner though and was very pleased to see NH make his own way out of the car. Might dig out my old Scalextric set to replicate the sound...

Facts from the last race
Lewis Hamilton took his 28th career win at Monza. It was his sixth win of the year – the most races he has ever won in a season.

Team mate Nico Rosberg has won four times yet retains a 22-point lead in the drivers’ championship with 175 left to be won.

There remains a strong possibility Hamilton could end the year with more wins than Rosberg but fewer points. This has happened on 12 previous occasions in F1 history, but only once in the last two decades.

On that occasion, in 2008, Hamilton was the beneficiary, pipping Felipe Massa to the title by a single point despite having won one race fewer than his rival. However Hamilton was controversially stripped of a victory at Spa that year, which was handed to Massa.

Hamilton set his 36th pole position and 17th fastest lap – the latter giving him as many as Rubens Barrichello. This was the fourth pole, fastest lap and win ‘hat trick’ of his career.

Rosberg followed him home for Mercedes’ seventh one-two of the season. They have six races left to beat the all-time record of ten set by McLaren in 1988.

Alonso failed to score a point for the first time this year after his Energy Recovery System failed. That’s only the second time out of his 90 starts for Ferrari that a reliability problem has forced him out of a race. His last such failure was 86 races ago, when his engine failed in the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix.

There are 64 ways Hamilton and Rosberg can finish 1-2 in the remaining races. In only 6 of those would Hamilton be champion.

Penalty points so far
Marcus Ericsson 5
Jules Bianchi 4
Pastor Maldonado 4
Kevin Magnussen 4
Valtteri Bottas 2
Adrian Sutil 2
Jean-Eric Vergne 1

Could be a very intresting race with the banning of radio assistance Rightly or wrongly it will be the thinking driver that benifits without the assistance of a room full of thinkers

A good result, that SC almost threw a spanner in the works though.

Better race than I was expecting.

Seems a much more relaxed and friendlier podium this race as well.

The conspirecy theorists reckon the mercedes internal punishment has now been paid and we start with a clean sheet
With only 3 points in it, who's the daddy going to be now

Yes of course the first thing a premium car brand wants to be associated with is unreliability.
