That Sky ad certainly looks good but having been a hardcore F1 fan for 15 years now I just want to see the race on free to air TV, not pay £100s a year to get some extra eye candy.

If you want to spend £100s on motor sport I suggest to everyone to cancel their new Sky subscriptions and book a trip to the Le Mans 24 hrs. Nothing TV can do will be able to recreate the awesome atmosphere there is when you are actually at that event. F1 doesn't come close. :naughty:

Thanks for that, that's a fantastic story. I love that sort of thing.

Jenson is such a smooth operator, I really like him. I would rather see Lewis take another title though. I just wish he didn't do the tabloid thing and talk about the breakup with his model girlfriend as part of his race interview. I don't care about his personal life, just go out there and win :)

its on my bucket list.... sadly it wont be this year, so to make up for it we are apparently doing a different 24hr race, from the pits too.....

The Snetterton 24 hrs....for 2CV's

When I was at Le Mans a few years ago they were going hourly updates of the Snetterton 2CVs on the Radio Le Mans because it was run at the same time as the French race. It was quite a laugh and the event sounded like a lot of fun actually.

Was anyone there when the Mercedes flipped on the Mulsanne straight in 99?

Webber again, he flips a lot lol.

Can't agree more...well almost, I am a fairly avid Button fan, so happy to see him whoop Hamiltons ass, but having said that, I don't dislike Lewis, as a driver he is supremely talented and 'could' be a great if only he wasn't so emotionally fragile and somewhat naive with his private/public life cross over. I don't blame him entirely mind you, his management and advisors in recent years have a lot to answer for, they are paid to make sure he can just go out there and race and there seems to be have been a noticable lack of that. Lets hope this year things are more settled and we see the talented driver shine through again!

yes, I think it will be fun, quite looking forward to it :D

Yes!!

I wasn't there on the Wednesday when Webber flipped the first time, but I was there on race day when Webber flipped again in morning warm-up and than when Peter Dumbreck flipped the other Mercedes in the race ... and both times the place went ominously, deathly quiet for a few minutes! :|

BTW, a great reason for getting SkySports is that you don't have to watch the Canadian Grand Prix - you can sit glued to the full 24 hours of Le Mans coverage instead

That was a historical moment, i am green with envy, nice one :)

The only claim to motorsport fame i have is touching Johnny Herberts tyre after the race. I couldn't believe how soft it was. Truly like putty.

I hadn't thought of that. It's just the price is way to high. If it was say £50-100 a year that might be ok but Sky is like £400 a year isn't it. That's every year too. :(

The best story I heard about the Mulsanne straight concerned Win Percy's MASSIVE 240mph crash in a Jaguar XJR.
He and Martin Brundle had developed a bad habit of jumping out of the car forgetting to disconnect their radio connectors, thus repeatedly breaking a connector that was worth pence. Tom Walkingshaw was so incensed by them that he called them into the office and screamed at them for what appeared to be a VERY long time. Walkinshaw had a reputation as being a very scary man.
Back the crash: 240mph, tyre blows, bodywork shreds, car literally flies higher than the trees, eventually car lands and what is left comes to a rest 600m down the track.
Win Percy is sitting in those remains, essentially just the tub. The first thing he does is not crawl out counting his lucky stars. The first thing he does is reach up and pull out the radio connector from his helmet.

v good.

I don't know whether anyone saw the program on the 1955 crash at Le Mans on BBC4 I think. An apex in Mercedes racing history that took them years to recover from. The people being interviewed that were there, are still very raw about it.

I speedsailed windsurfers to a middling level a few years back, I knew if i wiped out i may break ribs or an ankle etc but very unlikely to die. But these guys must have a brick wall between their survival instinct and their need to win. Bit like the TT racers, flattening of effect springs to mind.

I'm a huge fan of endurance racing and I've been, I was at the Silverstone 1000km last September as well. Le Mans is certainly an experience I would like to repeat, but you obviously forgot about the toilets and showers in the Houx campsite. If I go again I'm bringing a camper van with its own toilet and washing facilities!

Oh and the idiots that spray water on everyone driving into the campsite if they have a window open / convertible etc. And the other idiots that play music into the early hours of Monday morning when people are trying to sleep prior to the drive back.

I'll admit that despite my protests on TP last year concerning the split coverage not only will I still be watching but I'll be doing so on Sky. I admit it, I have not held my ground.

Getting excited now.... yippeeeeeeee

Don't worry about it, your money, your choice and let none gainsay you. I've had a Sky subscription since 2001 and am entirely happy to continue it, not like anyone else is going to give the level of coverage to the sports that I'm interested in (speedway, for example). I can just imagine the BBC cancelling Eastenders or ITV binning Corrie one evening a week to show two hours uninterrupted coverage of a league match, Poole vs Wolverhampton or similar. :naughty:

New show on the new sky F1 channel is just starting

8:00pm on Sky Sports F1
120 mins. Started 2 mins ago
Martin Brundle and Damon Hill join Simon Lazenby and the entire Sky Sports F1 team to preview the upcoming 2012 season. Also in HD

Must say seeing F1 stuff in a studio with the fake background and stuff just looks so dull now after BBCs live stuff from the pitlane and paddock. Hadn't struck me until now just how crazy and different it was, them not having a studio.

Big mistake IMO to have Damon Hill and Anthony Davidson involved, watching paint dry's more interesting. Saying that Georgia's an interesting addition. All in all, the preview show was a huge let down... come on sky, get your act together we're needing some banter, humour, craic ........ the presenting style was waay too formal !!!

I guess we will have to wait for next weekend to see how much that changes. I quite enjoyed the preview show, with the exception of that flipping touch screen thing, which looked like gadget for gadgets sake rather than any real use.

I don't think there's much point in Sky broadcasting anything from the Albert Park pitlane or paddock area this weekend! :whistling:

I'm thinking that this kit may do the job for £50 (plus an Ebay satellite finder for £5-10).

In the end I've got the Screwfix Labgear HD satellite kit.. locked onto 19.2E, and that should be full season live qualifying and race for the 2012 season (RTL). Subscription free. Plus that gets free Eurosport and a handful of other sports channels as well for anyone interested (F1 and regular German tv is worth it for me).

Respect mate. That is sooooo organised. One in the eye for mister humble :D

Due to having the lurgy at the moment and sleeping through most of today, I'll be staying up tonight to watch the first practice session.....

Anyone else doing the same?!

So far it seems pretty much like the BBC coverage last year. (The only difference is I have to watch it on a crappy feed on my computer because I can't afford it any other way). :(

That woman with Ant in that "sky pod" thing is well annoying. :gag::bonk:

am watching 2nd practise session...I thought there should be no adverts ?? there are some :(

I do like option to watch live feed and being able to switch to timings screen at same time

No adverts is only for the full race. Adverts in practice and between qualifying sessions.

I normally have the laptop on during race for the timings. Not sure I'd want to keep switching all the time. But didn't know it was working in the practice sessions. May give it a try on Saturday.

Will pass this onto my father he has a satellite dish setup. Is the commentary in German?

Just watched the "highlights" on the sky website, glad I didn't stay up!

Adverts during qualifying and the race from next season is what I heard. That was what sealed it for me not to get Sky. So an ad free season to lure you in, then the full Sky bull**** package from next year. :gag:

Not sure if you're aware of this, but to get the dedicated F1 HD channel, all you need is the HD package, which is an extra £10 a month......there's no need for any of the sports packages!!

Glad i recorded it.

I think mass has forgotten that there is replays saying there was a problem with his car that's why he ended up in the gravel. No its because you were on the wet grass trying to brake and turn in.

I think FP3 will show more then qualifying will be slightly better I reckon this first race could throw in a few surprises.

Totally wrong. They aren't ITV, and adverts only make a small part of income - breaks are frequently dropped on any of the live channels if events dictate.

As subscriptions only last a year, people would just cancel the moment they reduced the quality of the F1 coverage, and the focus of Sky is on retentions at present, which is done by enhancements to service not reduction!

But, hey, believe a random bit of disinformation if you like... there's a lot of dirty tricks from all sides...
