Bring it on!! i have sky sports and HD.. know nothing about the Tech stuff , but this year for the first time in nearly 5 years i am going to get to see the race's live!!! me is a happy person..

Last year, I missed loads of the races due to bookings, and almost always heard the result before I could watch it for myself on Sky+.....but as it stands at the moment, my wedding bookings fall perfectly between races and I'll only miss one qualifying session!! :D
 
The channel is now broadcasting pre-recorded bits and pieces (on 408).

Love them or hate them, when did ITV or the Beeb produce anything even close to this? (full screen and HD recommended):

I'm not an F1 fan (far from it in fact) but THAT is a great bit of film making and demonstrates exactly why Sky are miles ahead of the game when it comes to sports coverage IMO.

Wouldnt say that is anything more than the BBC produced. They did some stunning sequences for the opening of the race shows (shot themselves) and some very nicely stuff straight after the race, edited insanely quickly.

What gets me with that is that is that is very stylised with the shallow DOF and saturated a deep black colouring and it must have been shot specifically, but some of it is race before the announcement they were doing it, surely?

Anyway, it is nice and shows that someone can edit and process video nicely, doesn't make me think their coverage will be much different to the BBC (after all the race itself is all one world feed anyway).

All except Monaco and one other I forget.

Sky will no doubt be able to influence the race coverage, but they don't control it.
 
Nothing different much in that footage than the bbc did, often they push the boundaries with their coverage. Don't forget also that the actual race coverage is delivered by bernie and you get what you get.

They (FOM) supply all footage and mix all the audio at track, its up to the broadcaster to take the feeds they want. Didnt know that monaco control their own TV, thats interesting.

indeed, thats why F1 youtube videos disappear so fast, bernie likes to control it all

There is more to sports coverage than the event itself, which is as stated often the same feed for everyone.

Don't profess to have seen all output from Auntie last year, but certainly don't recall anything quite so well put together from them.

Got to agree with this, that clip has nothing in it that the beeb didn't do last year in terms of putting content together and overall presentation. Sky has an HD advantage for sure but some of their team are unknowns in the world of F1 coverage, so will be interesting to see how they are liked or otherwise by the audiences. [anyone remember the loathing for James Allen in his first few years? Now many fans have huge respect for him but it took him a long time to be accepted after the annoying, over excitable & frequently incorrect national institution that is Murray Walker stepped down] Sky have boxed very clever whipping Brundle out from under the BBC but I was and am quite happy with Jake Humphrey as frontman.... wonder if the new golden boy at Sky will be as good?


I take it we can expect adverts during race coverage from Sky? Pity them if they ever make the same mistake as ITV managed just that once and NEVER lived down!



Anyway, on balance I am quite looking forward to watching live races in HD on Sky, then seeing highlights with the BBC :D
 
I think they have said no ads during the race Yv, Could be wrong though.
 
It's F1, just go after lap 5 when nothing will happen for 20 mins
 
Well a reasonably quick search of YouTube throws up a few Beeb videos consisting of edited footage with VoiceOver or dubbed music, but nothing 'cinematic'.

Anyone got any links?

You were obviously at Specsavers when F1 was on BBC for the last 3 years!

The other one is Japan, FOM produce the footage for all the other races except for these two (for 2012).

The Sky promo is nice.. but unless they've invented time-travel it's a rehash of last years footage (available to the BBC) plus some winter testing. Very carefully selected to pick the most cinematic scenes/events. Given a crop to a wider aspect ratio - wider than 16:9 which exagerates the cinematic look. They certainly won't broadcast to that aspect ratio. Cleaned and re-graded to a very cinematic look.

It looks like the love-child of a Sony 100Hz demo VHS from the early-90s and a feature demonstration by Vincent Le Foret. It still won't have me paying a penny to Murdoch.
 
Too soon for me, but I'm wondering if it's possible to get, say a Greek satellite provider airing the sky coverage for 10% of the price??

More than happy to pay for this, like Alastair I'm allergic to all things Murdoch.

I hope RBR is slow this year. Be nice to see Vetel under pressure for once.
 
Simon - if my sources are right and RTL still has the coverage of qualifying and race day, then if you can switch to Astra 19E (or add a second dish pointing that way) you should get subscription free coverage (and use radio 5 for the commentary). And you should also get Eurosport free as well. I used to run an analogue dish for the German tv until the system gave-up out of old age.

Sounds like a plan. I don't have a dish, but it's worth sourcing second hand kit for this.

They stole Anthony Davidson from 5 live as well!

One person who will be very interesting to listen to is Gary Anderson. His reports so far have been very interesting.
 
I'm thinking that this kit may do the job for £50 (plus an Ebay satellite finder for £5-10).
 
Fortunately get all the races on Star Sports here....although I draw the line at paying extra for HD.

Just sorting out logistics of going up for Shanghai....going to do Singapore again, and possibly Korea if I can fit it in.
 
The coverage of GP2 and 3 should be quite lively though.

I am given to understand there will be a lot of red button options during the F1.
 
Sky has started to advertise their preview shows, beginning next weekend. A 2012 season preview, pre season testing reviews, a review of the 1988 season, interviews with Emmo and wee Jackie Stewart, etc.

It strikes me that if they are running a Formula One channel 24/7 through the year, we will be treated to some little gems among all the repeats.
 
Just been looking at which races the BBC are showing live and I think some of them would not have been my choice.

The Canadian and Japanese GP stand out as two races I'd like to see live. They often throw up good racing, and of course I'd also like to see the opener in Australia to see it all kick off after such a long closed season.

Anyone else puzzled by some of the choices??

I am not sure they were choices, more a compromise.
 
The biggest miss will be Canada. But I suppose having to go down the pub at 5pm on a Sunday afternoon in June isn't too bad.
 
The season starts in less than 12 days, jeez time flies.
 
Who all on this sky team on race day,is martin the main man then . The beep are scraping the dregs if Anthony Davidson's on their team,he's worse than Nigel Mansel
 
Anthony Davidson is on the sky team, i think that's what you were saying.

Mansel is just a incredibly quick driver. For that i forgive his magnolia personality.

It does show how tastes differ, personally I find little Ant ten times more erudite and intelligent than Mansell ;)

The best people do seem to be equally split across Sky and BBC, between the two of them there really is a 'dreamteam' [I have now checked his copy of motorsport for who is where] but you will have to do some channel/radio hopping to get it all together imo.

Correct, but Davidson has never won a race in F1 let alone become world champion. I think Coulthard is bang on as a commentator, he upstaged Brundle a few times. Also he was very close to being world champion in 2001 and won races unlike Brundle.

Brundle demure is similar to Mansels, he also has issues with some of the top drivers, where Coulthard hasn't. Who interviewed Schumacher last time for the BBC, Coulthard, It certainly wasn't Brundle.

:lol: OK, Coulthard has as many 'issues' as Brundle...just with different people and it shows [and I say that as a long standing Coulthard fan] - however, I like my commentators to be able to actually talk like the listeners have half an idea, so knowledgably, without extremes of dumbing down and Brundle, Coulthard, Davison - all 3 have been excellent commentators for me - many would say murray walker was too, he had never even driven an f1 car in anger, never mind won any thing in one.

The point I am making is that ex-racers don't always make the best commentary team [Mansell being a case in point, couldn't talk his way out of a paper bag imo] but nor do ex-racers that do well commentating have to have 'won' to be good. :)

Like I say though, it all about what you want from your commentary - personally I love the banter, the 'been there' cynicism, and the camaraderie we have seen in recent years - long may it continue :thumbs:
 
Good call, I think the younger drivers such as Davidson are much more media savvy and like you said winning races isn't a prerequisite.

I won't mention your Murray comment blowing my argument out of the water :D

Actually though you are of course right, 'media savvy' is very much an important part of things these days. The first time I saw Ant talking to the public was years ago at the Autosport show, just as he was coming into f1 - he was walking round the big grid display they always have, being interviewed by Matt Bishop who was editor of F1 Racing at the time [now McLarens head of PR & Comms] and Mike Lawrence iirc, to the boys credit [he always did look about 12 yrs old] he was excellent. Informative, funny and actually able to talk publically.

That was a big difference and a lot of media training from the time my OH Yves Geza first enccountered him - a few years earlier, also at Autosport. YG and his motorsport marketing business partner were wandering around the Karting area when they encountered 2 young boys sitting on a stand, busily engrossed in their Nintendo Gameboys, whilst the grownups around them got on with trying to promote the junior Karting business of the stand..... at the same time, another young lad, suited and booted, walked up to my OH & his partner and started talking to them, and was telling them what he was doing in karting, and generally charming the pants off them [for want of a better expression] as they looked like the sort of people that might help his career - THAT young lad was Danny Wheldon.... the other two slightly less worldly boys... Ant Davison and Jenson Button...


Wonder what happened to those two then.... :naughty: ;)
