The 20 greatest fast Fords

Btw @nilagin did you see the mention for your pocket rocket. Naturally it was biased, but nice nevertheless

but I've never been one to like brand new exhausts.
That sounds incredibly tinny!
What ever happened to the deep throaty roar of the late 70's early 80's?
Even my "straight 4" race tuned GTi with a Janspeed sounded better than that.

Disappointed of MK

I'd have a GT40 if I could fit into one. (And could afford one!!!) You can keep the rest though, even the modern Mustang.

I owned zero and are very unlikely to ever own one of them. I'm just not a Ford guy. But I can appreciate some of the icons.

4/20 is not very good. I've owned nine of them over the years and I'm not even a Ford man :p

I liked the 4wd and rwd ones, but ended up getting sidetracked by a Lancia Delta Integrale and a string of Quattros, before realising I just wasn't all that into fast driving anymore about 10 years ago...

Nice way to figure it out though :)

Not really a Ford person, but I do like some of them, especially the RS1600 (as it has the BDA engine and its Kent or Pinto contemporaries) and of course the GT40.

Still find it impossible to get excited about a front wheel drive car o_O and haven't owned one in over 15 years, so no love for the Focus or Ka or later Escorts from me!

I agree,
The problem with that is, however, there isn't really much of a choice, especially for your average motorist.

Oh plenty of choice for the average common man. BMW has got lots of choice in its range.

Oh once you are inside it is quite nice. Just close your eyes before you slip in.
I was in an M3 once, ( note the once ;) ) It was probably one of the worst cars I'd ever been in.

Well I have a 335d ix over a Ford Focus any day ;)

I drove an ST once, possibly the second worse car id been in :D
I had a trackday in an Aston Martin V8 Vantage at Silverstone today, fun and nice but having driven fwd for years my Focus ST is so much easier to drive and actually feels faster in some instances. I was waiting for the Aston's 380bhp to have me pressed back in the seat but it felt no different to my 250PS Focus and with fwd I'd be inclined to get on the power a lot sooner.

The pocket rockets will do that ( feel like that)
as opposed to a "luxury car" that's meant to feel smooth all the way, and not pin you to your seat ;)

Give me a ford over a vw any day. The great German reliability myth. 25 years ago maybe..

There is more to a car than reliability though isn't there? I mean if you want reliable and cheap why not go for Korean, nice 7 year warranty and all that.

But even for these fords, these are a bit special. Personally I think each and everyone was bettered by another vehicle but for Ford they were something special. Not the usual boring grey middle ground stuff. But hey isn't it great that there is choice, the world would be so boring if everyone drove the same vehicle.

Renault Twingo. It's even got the engine in the correct place!

Might as well have a front wheel drive as a rear wheel drive rear engined car. ;)
Oh and what will it be when it grows up I wonder?

Wrong Capri though and only one. Panthers v8 Capri from South Africa should be in there, as should the rs2600, the 3 litre with x pack (Triple cabs), and no zakspeed.

I guess it was a silly one with six or more cylinders. The original, four-cylinder E30 M3 was - and remains! - simply the best car ever made. Totally fast, totally usable, totally dependable it was the equivalent of a Porsche 911 if you wanted to hoon half way across Europe at silly speeds but with four seats and a full sized boot.

It's one of the cars I wish we'd never parted with!

By and large I agree and far prefer the unadulterated steering feel of undriven wheels, but about twenty years ago, I climbed out of my Peugeot 306 2-litre 8-valve Q-car [which was also one of my favourite all-time cars] into a Mazda MX5, and realised how much driver involvement and feedback the Japanese hadn't managed to engineer into their rear-wheel drive sports car icon

But then we gentlemen of a certain age, earned our (driving) "wings" "flying by the seat of our pants"
Its good to get back to the old days occasionally ;)

IIRC yes it was.

My ST felts smoother than the Aston which had an auto box and paddle shift. Mind you I only had around 10 laps in the Aston so not really much chance to get used to it properly, spent most of my time trying to perfect the right lines and not frighten the instructor too much with my late braking. ;) (His main comment on my sheet after the drive was "has no problem with driving flat out and late braking" When I got out of the car all you could smell was cooking brakes. ;)

I think you mean Perana.

:D
I did a rally day a few years ago, and one thing the instructor stressed was, instead of braking, as you would do normally, count to 3 and then brake,
One corner was fast approaching, and he said are you gonna f*****g brake?
To which I replied "one" "two"..
He just muttered under his breath, f*****g hooligan :D
