The 20-21 season football thread

Frank Lampard was on a hiding to nothing, Chelsea have shown that, even with a good run of form, their form drops off around 12 months after a new manager is in place. They may have won a lot of silverware, but surely running a club like that is not sustainable.

I agree but he made some very strange team choices and substitutions.

I can't understand why Premier League clubs are held to either a 1-0 deficit or a draw by teams two or three divisions below them.. and even lower ..and leave it until the last 10-15 minutes to get their act together before they find themselves knocked out. Spurs were losing 1-0 to Wycombe and with a touch more luck for Wycombe infront of goal it could have been 2 or even 3 nil. Spurs lef it ,as I recall, with about 8 minutes plus 3 minutes ET left . It took Kane, Son and Ndombele ,who all came off the bench, to get them the 1-4 win. At least Bale scored but missed several attempts that not so long ago he would have scored. He's still not got his mojo back. He's also been out with a calf injury. I expect he'll feature against Liverpool on Thursday evening. Just realised..no Deli Ali. He may well be off to PSG..on loan soon as PSG has put together an agreed package..as they say..for the transfer. He'll be glad to work with his old boss Poch.

So, Spurs play Everton at Goodison in the 5th round at Goodison Park. As a kid my parents put me on a train to Liverpool Lime street station ..about a 30 minute trip.. and my uncle met me there and took me to watch Everton and there was a lady there dressed in a huge flared blue dress and she wore a bonnet and had a tray round her neck like the ushers in a cinema selling ice cream at half time but this lady was throwing Everton toffee into the crowds.Hence the name Toffees but some say the name came from their proximity to Wales..Taffys.

Spurs v Liverpool on Thursday evening which I can watch on BT Sport.

Teams at that level play above themselves, its their FA Cup Final - and at some of the grounds it can be unsettling. Add in the 50%+ of non 1st team players starting but bear in mind that while these things happen they also often get a comfortable lead and win as Chelsea did v Luton.

Just about to watch Spurs v Liverpoool.(BT Sport1) Liverpool have slipped up a few times lately so I hope Spurs can take advantage of that and if ahead still push for more goals rather than sit back and defend a lead which they've got form for and on too many occasions resulting in losing games they should have won. Be interesting to see if Bale starts, too. He'll feature but at the start or off the bench remains to be seen.Soon find out.

It's a crazy season. Manchester United beaten by Sheffield United yesterday..2-1 and at Old Trafford. I don't bet but if I did I wouldn't be putting any on who will win the Premiere League nor qualifying for the Champions League or UEFA.

"The Bassetts Everton Mint is a traditional British mint best known for its distinctive black and white colouring. The mints were first produced in a Liverpool sweet shop close to Goodison Park, home of football club Everton FC – hence the name.

The owner of the sweet shop, one Mother Noblett, created the mints to appeal to Everton fans, making them black and white in honour of the team’s then black and white kit.

She even persuaded the club to let a girl walk around the ground before matches, throwing mints into the crowd! Needless to say the mints caught on and remain hugely popular – even if Everton have since changed their kit colour to blue!"

From the Bassetts website

Sent to me by a Manure fan....

Solsjkaer, Pep, Rogers, Dyche & Klopp are in a bar. Pep goes up to the bar, £20 for 5 pints. Then Rogers, Dyche & Klopp - same routine.
Ole goes up next “£16 please sir” says the barman and Ole passes out 4 pints to everyone apart from Klopp. Klopp kicks off and Ole says “sorry Jurgen, this is the 5th round, and you’re not in it” :ROFLMAO:

Listening to Brighton v Spurs . Spurs losing 1-0. Kane injured from the Liverpool game so Bale started but has just been substituted after 60 minutes and, according to the commentator, looked a bit miserable as he came off. . There were great expectations about his loan move but so far disaappointing. They lost to Liverpool on Thursday now a defeat here is looming. I didn't like Mourinho's post match interview. Blamed individuals rather than how he set them up..5 at the back. He sounded so depressing. I wouldn't like to play for him. The summariser is saying they just aren't pushing forward. After a bright start to the season it' seems to be back to 'as you were'.

Be interesting to hear what fans have to say post match phone-in...Five Live.

But that is what you get with Moanio. And, don't forget you're nearing the 2 year point where it normally implodes.

I think the man is an awful manager. Yes he wins things but his management style is just not sustainable, how many times has he proved that?

Some good results this weekend, but it shows how crazy the season is when West Ham are the top London club

I thought Man U were the top London club (well, thats where all their fans live) :p

Spurs v Chelsea at 8.00pm. I'm beginning to despair of them...again. Bale might as well spend time with his family in Cardiff. He just isn't 'turning up' as they say and costing £220,000 of the £600,000 a week he's paid at RM. There's talk of Spurs cutting short the 12 month loan-deal and sending him back to RM. I think Mourhino should give him more playing time especially as Kane woulds seem to be out for a few weeks although I see Mourhino expects him back next week. Bale rarely starts and comes off the bench, mostly half-way through a second half or even later.

I've read that it will be a 4-3-2-1 set up because they were overun in midfield against Brighton. There'll be no Deli Ali and neither will Bale start, instead that ;position will go to Vinicius.. Mourhino needs certainty. Five mins to kick-off.. just time to get a cuppa :)

Liverpool 0 Fulham 1.

A Mo Saleh mistake gave Fulham the win.

Roy Keane's take https://www.express.co.uk/sport/foo...Fulham-Andy-Robertson-Mohamed-Salah-Roy-Keane

I don't know what has happened to Liverpool over the past few months. They just seem to have run out of passion.

I didn't expect City to lose today because Man U have been pretty poor of late. Still cannot see anyone catching City though.

My focus is at the other end of the table as one of my good friends is a Newcastle supporter. I promise I didn't know that when I befriended him; now I stay friends just out of pity and the humour Newcastle United performances provide :D

United played well and deserved the win. That will give them a massive confidence boost. De Bruyner's injuries have impacted.

I feel sorry for Newcastle under Mike Ashley who's basically used it as an advertising front for his businesses and just when the fans..probably the players and staff too thought he'd sold it the Saudi's recentlypulled out. He even renamned the stadium from St James' Park to Sports Direct Arena, He's since (2017) apologised for doing that but it was the new main sponsor..Wonga..that changed it back to the original. It's back to the original now. Got to laugh. Ashley and Wonga ??. Devils incarnate..lol.It;s a real shame as the fans are fantastic..The Toon Army. I've seen some on the terraces with no top on in mid-winter :D

It's a bit bewildering re Liverpool. They all slip up now and then against teams which should be easily beaten but how many is that Liverpool has lost ?.. six consecutive home defeats. It's not so much of a blip, as they say but a collapse of form. They've now slipped to 8th with teams around them with one and two games in hand. Next up are Wolves followed by Arsenal. They face Leipzig (second leg-Champions League) at home on Wednesday with a 2-0 advantage.

Spurs seemed to hacve turned a corner with Bale finding form..he scored trwo yeserday against Palace.A good test will be the London Derby at the Emirates next Sunday. A potent attacking with Kane-Son-Bale-Ali with Hojbjerg and Ndombele behind them. It's the centre-backs that needs some attention. Wing-back Reguilon is a great asset and like Bale, on loan from Real Madrid. I'm hoping management will address this ovder the summer. Having said that Rodon was signed from Swansea but hasn't featured a great deal as he settles in..he's only 23. Possible exits are Danny Rose, Alderweireld and Lucas Moura but Moura can be excellent. I read that a possible addition is James Ward-Prowse...defensive mid-fielder. Spurs have a good relationship with Southampton . You have to wonder where they'd be if they weren't a selling club. The most notable transfer (to Spurs 2007) was Gareth Bale at 17 years old.

Southampton have, over the years, let some real gems go, but they have got good money for them. One's I can think of off the top of my head are

Alan Shearer
Gareth Bale
Theo Walcott
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Callum Chambers
Danny Ings
Virgil Van Dijk
Victor Wanyama
Luke Sure
Peter Crouch

That's a lot of talent!!

Edit - Danny Ings is still there - I must have thought it was about time they sold him :)

It is good to see Gerrard prove himself. You never know, the way Liverpool are playing, he could be at Anfield next season

My team is Leicester City, since the 2016/17 season they have sold (among others)

Ben Chillwell
Harry Mcguire
Riyad Mahrez
Danny Drinkwater
N'Golo Kante

Reported sales = £255.000,000 !

Still performing pretty well I think ? :D

Now now, we may have a few sensitive types on here....

So good to see that in these painful, uncertain and unpredictable covid times we are living in, that we can all rely on Spurs for a laugh!

Tell me about it  It wasn't on any TV channel nor Five Live nor Talksport. I watched the AC Milan v Manchester United game.

I've just watched the highlights and Kane was unfortunate not to score in the 84th minute and again in extra time..a great goalie but what a third goal by Orsic. He took it from the half-way line past about 4 Spurs players.

Here's Mouhrino's post-match interview. He looks like he's about to cry, a broken man. I've never seen him like this. It's mostly about himself. He criticises the attitude of Spurs. Just listen to what he says at 4.30 ..video time-line.He says he feels sorry that ..."My team is the team that didn't bring to the game not just the basics of football but the basics of life which is to respect our jobs and to give everything" I can't see that going down too well with the players. If they lose to Manchester City in the Carabao cup final on April 25th. their last chance at Europa League qualification.. that's it. I can't see them making it to the top six. Ahead are Everton-Liverpool West Ham and Chelseas. They do have two games in hand but so does West Ham who have great form as have Chelsea and Everton also have two games in hand. Spurs have a new 62,000 capacity stadium at a cost of £1 billion. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Board room when it's discussed.

I listened to the Talksport phone-in last night and fans of 30 and 40 years have had enough. One said he's thinking of not renewing his season ticket. Another referred to Eric Dier as Eric Diarrhea...lol..Some were angry shouting down their phones. Here are some more comments https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/im-done-now-furious-tottenham-20209859

The post-match interview.

He has said that it was a "terrible error of judgement", but then, Maradona did the same thing to England.

Typical Sepp Blatter though, paying someone off to keep quiet. In my opinion, that is far worse.

It's a pity when sports people at the top of their game...you mention the 'hand of God' Maradona, goal..do things like this. If you were to ask people what they know of Maradona that's all they'll recall not the other fantastic goal he scored in that game.

Yes. Agree. I thought..'there's the rogue,Blatter". He should have gone years ago. He's reported to be worth £13 million

I've been listening to more phone-ins re Spurs. Wow. There are some angry supporters out there. Blamed individually are ..'the players'...'Mourhino'-'Levy'. A couple brought up the possibility of Kane leaving and Son hasn't signed a new contract yet. A question posed by the studio people was 'does Kane want to stay at Spurs to break Alan Shearer's Premier League goal total of 260 or does he want to have silverwear on his mantlepiece ? . Kane and Son have already broken the 25 year goal record by a 'duo' in the Premier League. He doesn't have to stay at Spurs to break Shearer's record which he (Shearer) achieved playing for Blackburn and Newcastle. It will be interesting to see what happens over the summer.

Apologies for this.. :D

October last.

A former Gunners defender has heaped praise on the Spurs captain after seeing him show off the more creative side of his game
Arsenal legend Martin Keown has drawn comparisons between Harry Kane and Dennis Bergkamp, while insisting the Tottenham striker can break Thierry Henry's Premier League assists record.

I still think Jimmy Magee's commentary of that goal was the best ... "different class!" such minimalist commentary but so effective.

As for the Henry debacle, the FAI might have taken a pay off but the Irish fans were never anything but disgusted, an even more blatant handball than Diego's, Henry himself did admit he basically cheated later .... we have trouble enough getting through those stages as is FFS

I have always maintained that Maradona's 2nd goal wasn't as brilliant as people make out. The England defence were just scared of trying to tackle him as he would dive and get a penalty. The ref had already sided with him once, they would surely assume that the same would happen. It wasn't the fact that they couldn't get near him, they were just (probably subconsciously) worried about him hitting the deck and claiming a foul.

Sepp Blatter was a terrible blight on world football. The man should be in prison.

And that for me is why he should not be mentioned in the same breath as Pele. Dirty little cheat!

I think they'd rather a yellow or even a red! than concede so I don't buy that. I've watched it maybe a hundred times over the years and it still impresses me, amazing skill, brilliant goal, atrocious defending

Interesting listening to Sky Sports yesterday on the Rangers v Salvia game. The captain of Rangers saying "it was a disgusting racist comment 100%" then in the same sentence said he didn't hear it! How do you know if you didn't hear it?

It probably was - the guy ran to the Rangers player, covered his mouth and said something which he reacted to - but I do not see how you can prove it was a racist comment and not something nasty about his family.

He trusts in what his team mate tells him I guess? That crap should be long gone from the game, any game! It's strange how it seems to occur more so in field sports, you don't hear about it in combat sports, water sports, athletics etc, mostly football and rugby for whatever reason

I tend to agree. It was wonderful skill.

An interesting observation. I've spent a fair bit of time trying to get an answer to no avail. Every search resulted in many examples of racism...mainly in football.. and how clubs and the FA are taking measures to at least reduce it significantly. They probably will never eliminate it. A Sky Sports survey showed that 87% of football supporters in stadiums had heard racial abuse whilst watching a game. I suppose the first answer you might get is that football is a 'working class' sport. Many players came from deprived backgrounds but having said that the cost of tickets these days, especially season tickets has made it more a middle-class sport re spectators but the the dedicated fan still managers to find the money. The term I came across was 'gentrification'

This article relates to Arsenal and it worth a quick read.It refers to a player Liam Brady. He played in the first team from 1973.

As far as general hooliganism goes

Football hooliganism dates all the way back to the Middle Ages in England. Fights between groups of youths often occurred during football matches organised between neighbouring towns and villages on Shrove Tuesdays and other Holy Days. Merchants concerned over the effect of such disturbance on trade called for the control of football as early as the 14th century. King Edward 11 banned football in 1314 and thenKing Edward 111 in 1349 because he felt the disorder and violence that accompanied matches led to civil unrest and distracted his subjects. A number of other monarchs and various authorities also tried to ban football through the centuries in England and Scotland but they were largely ineffective.
