The 10 Crappiest British Towns

Having been brought up in the Medway towns, I can't understand why Chatham is not on the list, or come to think of it, Southall. Not far from me but it's bloody awful.

Hull, went there once and everybody seemed to have had a charisma by pass, the streets were dirty, and it just looked s****.

To put "London" on the list, well, it's a very big place and some parts are rather nice. Although of course some aren't....

Agree

London is not a town but has been deemed a city made up of towns. Yes loads of crap parts but lots of parks commons and open space, the river and loads of things to do. One of the great cities of the world. Overpopulation is a problem.

They obviously haven't been to Littlehampton then.

No Welsh towns either....could I put forward Rhyl  or maybe even Colwyn Bay..:shake:

Agree, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Bangor, Caernarfon, Bala, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wrexham, Most everywhere South of Brecon....

Had to look up where Rhydyclafdy was:(

Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and Wrecsam have their problems but they do have in their defence (in order): nice East End (away from the B&B full of single mothers), Cambrian Photography and the Racecourse.

For Wales I think Merthyr Tydfil is the ideal candidate - or just about anywhere below the Heads of the Valleys Road.

:eek:surprised noone has suggested Bracknell yet:gag:

According to the votes, they are:

1 London

2 Bradford

3 Chipping Norton

4 Southampton

5 York

6 Gibraltar

7 Coventry

8 Nuneaton

9 High Wycombe

10 Stoke-on-Trent

Any glaring omissions? Do you agree? More info here.

Glad to see that Bangor (N.Wales) isn't in there! ;)

[EDIT] Okay, just read other members' posts... Bangor is pretty shoddy, but it's a nice community! The surrounding area is also second-to-none!

I wouldn't really call Gibraltar a British town. It's a Spanish town with british people living in it, there are no houses, only apatrments and most things are done the 'Spanish' way.

Here's my revised list:
1. Bath
2. Oxford
3. Winchester
4. Cambridge
5. Broadway
6. York
7. Chester
8. Weymouth
9. Saint Hilaire du Harcouet
10. Stoke-on-Trent

8. Weymouthe interesting to get a feel for crappiness for some of them
9. Saint Hilaire du Harcouet
10. Stoke-on-Trent

Interesting list

Be useful for an idea on why any random towns are crappy?

Bath is a City BTW

Winchester - crappy? This can not be serious? Unless of course you dislike hills, or the terrible cross roads by the train station.

As are most of them.

Yes realised the presence of a cathedra points towards that status. Bath has an Abbey but links to Wells Cathedral for the Bath and Well Diocese.

Since the 19th Century City status did not require a Cathedral and there are Cathedral Towns. (eg Rochester, Bury St Edmunds).

Bath has crappy parts but has undergone a major refurbishment around the railway station which has made a big difference to the feel of the place. As a World Heritage Centre and with a growing investment programme it is hardly crappy.

I agree, Bath is not crappy. I like Bath, it is very pretty around the centre.
Compared to Bristol, the crappy parts aren't half as bad.
Everywhere has a sink area, it's part of how houses have to be built.
