I just set off to do some IR shots of the nearby fields. I thought with the sunset coming in and a light mist...it'd look pretty awesome.

So I walk down and setup, I'm just getting the focus right and screwing the filter on and I hear a quad bike stop behind me....here we go...

Old man: What are you doing here?!
Me: *looks at camera on tripod*
Old man: Well?! Come on! out with it!!!
Me: I'm taking pictures
Old man: But that's MY field
Me: errrm.....right....what difference does that make, I'm a photographer, therefore I take pictures
Old man: Not of my field your not

So I turn to ignore him as all I needed to do was press the shutter button to then continue my arguement, So I set it for a 30 second exposure, and *click* it starts taking the picture

Old man: you should have more respect for your elders!!!!
Ok, so I snapped...

Me: To be fair, you don't have any signs up saying you don't want any pictures taken, I'm taking a picture of the bloody sunset for starters, which isn't owned by anyone! And what harm is it doing, I'm not actually on your field, I'm behind the gate, I'm doing nothing wrong. Unless you can prove I am breaking the law I'm not moving a muscle until I'm finished!

*click* - ahh awesome. The picture is done :D

Old man: Where do you live?
Me: Why, are you going to come and take pictures?
Old man: nope, I'm reporting you to the police for a public disturbance
Me: Riiight...sure, I'm done here anyway.

So I pack away my stuff with the old man standing there looking smug. And I said "I'll be back here tonight, to get some shots of the moonlit field, yes I mean your field as well"

Old man: What time?!
Me: Whenever I feel like it, like I said. I'm breaking no laws.

The guy looked stunned and couldn't think of a reply, so feeling good about myself I proudly march away.

I just got into the flat, turn on the camera and hit the play button

Made my evening !

Made me smile.

Now, if you have the option to "shoot with no CF card inserted", turn it off!!!

Shame though, I wanted to see HIS field

you should set the custom function so you can't take picture without a card in

card readers...:shake:....phsyke

farmers...:shake:...a law to themselves

Wouldn't that have been just brilliant if he had called the police

Bob

just what we need more petty people

watch out he dosent get his shotgun..

If you were in the field and therefore on the man's land, then he was correct in what he said, you were (technically) breaking the law and it sounds as if you have absolutely no respect for private property or indeed any respect for your elders......

TBH being on both sides of the fence and also living in Essex, if you are not a farmer you are probably not aware of the huge problems with gypsies and hare coursers in Essex, I can fully understand his reaction and it probably would have done you a huge favour to have had a civilized conversation with him, yes some are complete tards but it's a very awkward position to be in, and just to clear something up chances are if you were in his gateway you were on his land.

he says he wasnt in the field but behind the gate

Even so, he may still have been on the man's land. It doesn't sound as if that was the real issue though, even bearing in mind we only have one side of the story here it sounds as if a bit of civility would have worked wonders....

Edit- having said that, I do know that some farmer's really do have an attitude problem, but again, he probably has a completely different tale to tell of the encounter ;)

theres allways 2 sides to a story
but i cant see how takeing pics into a field should upset anyone

your correct though a bit of civility usualy defuses trouble...

Maybe he is growing more than his EU quota allows...for purely personal use you understand ;)

With out knowing/seeing the location. Surly its possible that you still could have been on his land even if your behind his gate!

Come on then. settle the argument and show us your positon plotted on google earth :p

There is a warning on mine which says "No CF Card Fitted"

Go back and ring the police and tell them you are being harassed on the third phone call the must respond,:eek, or go the the next field and buy a bigger zoom with an extender:lol::lol:

Regards Mark....chuckle

Awwww nooo, you poor thing! But well done on standing your ground anyway. Oh dear, some people can be right miserable old buggers, ain't they?
That was a beautifully written thread which had the effect of putting a smile on my face at this god-forsaken time of the day.
When I was reading your thread, this Viz comic character kept springing to mind:

OOoooooaaaaar, geeeeeeerrrrrt ooooorrrrrrfff mooooooi laaaaaaand!! He be worroing moi sheeeep!

Ian, I see you've visited Dorset before then?

I am sorry, that made me literally LOL

Bless ya :D

:lol::lol: So who was the bigger Burk?!?:lol::lol:

It's actually berk, from the rhyming slang berkley hunt. ;)

I'd have felt a right berk too though, for sure. Although coming away with a good tale has got to be worth something, even if not as much as the shot. :D

I wonder if he had a horse anywhere in the field or area? There have been some horse thefts around here and the police were advising the public/owners to call them if they saw anyone taking pictures around fields of horses as apparently they were taking pictures of them before stealing them

This is very true, but we also have to be careful we don't go down the same route as with children. With a hell of a lot of landscapes, there are mostly like to be horses close by.

At least the field will still be there today, just remember the CF card next time ;)

In fairness, the old man could have said that he was standing on his land, or that when he was going to call the police, he was going to get him for trespassing on his land. My guess is that he was just a daft of b****r :)

This thread has made my monday at work alot happier :)

Mike

I'm glad you said the field above the 'A Marker' and not the playing field below it.

LOL

In fairness, the old man could have said that he was standing on his land

Didn't he say exactly that? And why does the police have to be involved before someone will accept they are in the wrong (although by the tone of the OP he would have taken the pic anyway and then left before they could arrive)

Common decency says respect the land-owners wishes. Perhaps being civil and he might have granted permission; it certainly wouldn't have hurt. Chances of the next guy with a camera getting permission for a shot are now slim to none.

Sorry but the arrogance of the original poster astounds me, and its the attitude like that that makes me embarrassed to be seen carrying around a camera.

Hang on a minute! The OP said he was NOT on the farmer's land and that the farmer was complaining about him take photos OF his field rather than IN it. Where's the arrogance?

You need to read the op's message again..

I may be wrong but trespass is not a criminal offence but covered under civil law..

Sigh..... it's a strange old world.

Seemed unclear as to whether he was on the farmers land or not, his response to the farmer didn't state he was on public land so therefore was right but was more a "you cant prove i'm in the wrong so shove off or call the police"

Slander, libel and even breach of copyright are all civil offenses not criminal, doesn't mean they are any less morally wrong.
