Yes
they have changed my tax code to BR -20% in my wages now

BR - normally means i would have a second job except i dont

Luckily for me my parents own the buisness and we spoke to our accountant who has said not to pay them tax as it is a mistake they made

if i wasnt in a lucky position with the family buisness and my boss told me expect a 20% wage loss i would be struggling right now for me it would of been roughly £50 a week

i do feel for the family's who will be in the same situation

Inland Revenue have had a massive cock up when they changed their computer systems. I'd call them to sort it if you think it's a mistake rather than withholding taxes. I called them and it was sorted in minutes.

i've had the same, as has my partner and her mother. Her mother doesn't even earn enough to pay tax!!!!

They said it was due to me having 2 full time jobs as my previous employer was active again on their records. I left 4 years ago!!! and how would i manage 2 full time jobs 240 miles apart???

In total I've had 4 tax codes and then my employer was sent a completely different one.

I think its all sorted now but who knows!

I would consider changing accountants if I was told to hold off on the tax, if you pay in error, you get it back, if you dont pay, you get fined!

our accountant is a good accountant matty he has helped us so many times

never had a problem

my wife was self employed a few years back and although she ahs a tax code now for working she stills get letter with a fine of xxx we get the several times a year and they say it is all sorted when we ring up then another letter comes through we gave up in the end

again we spoke to the accountant he advised us to keep all the end of year tax letters we get from the employer and a copy of all the letters we sent in and even if it goes to court it would get thrown out

IR gave me a £550 tax refund last month, this month I got a demand for payment of 14p which is overdue and they say I may be charged interest on it!!

I think I'll send them a cheque, folded many times and stapled to a letter asking for a vat receipt...

For the last few years when my Tax thingy comes through they always say they're going to tax me on have a company car and a company van!!!

As a Sales Manager I only have one car and have had it adjusted every year, you would have thought they would have learnt by now!

my wife gets the same forms, we do the same thing, but a tax demand needs paying (unless its massive!) as it will take a while to sort out if they dont realise its wrong, and if they start slapping charges in it gets worse and worse (/licks experience wounds)

it's not beyond the realms that a previous employer could use your details to pay a salary to themselves / A.N.Other without you knowing - especially if they were ready to bump a company or something.

don't want to put a downer on things

But a good accountant is likely to know that hmrc has made this error - it has been well publicised - and know what the correct tax code should be (and maybe if he operates the payroll called hmrc to confirm)

It's possible, although as mentioned previously, my partner had a similar issue. In her case the IR system sent her Tax code to her previous employer. This was a month or so before I received mine with the same issue. In her case we put it down to a possible admin error as she'd been made redundant just before the tax year end last year, we assumed it was an admin error due to the timing.

So overall, I'm more inclined to believe that the IR system is simply not up to the job it was designed to do. On their website they actually state that they have introduced a new system and have encountered some issues.
