Apparently they charge by time.
If you put it in for a service they clean your sensor too.
You have to ask for the actuation count though. They don't do it as part of the service.

my 5d in for repair at the moment. ive asked them to do a shutter count, is that free or do they add to the bill. i forgot to ask

not on the mk1 (unless someone knows different)
not sure about the mk11

You can with the 5D2, I've done it myself just not sure on the 5D.
