This weekend is the Thames festival. Arts, crafts, entertainment, food and drink!!

I went down today and it was a photographers playground.

It runs from midday-midnight Saturday and Sunday.

Would to see your pics from today!!

Great pics guys!

I was wandering around with the family, so only managed a few. I'll get them up soon.

While I wasn't taking pictures, I was observing and I think Canon were the majority today (boo!). Quite a few film togs too which was interesting. Of the togs I noticed I reckon there was about 20% film. Quite high I think!!

Anyway, well done Canon (boo!).

its funny the ones I noticed were the ones with tripods or monopods strapped to their rucksacs. I do find myself wondering what possible use either would be in that environment?

Yeah, saw a few of them!! Some very SERIOUS looking togs indeed. Nevermind enjoying the atmosphere, I've got a job to do!!

Jokes aside, it was such a great day, just too many things and people to take pictures of. Def a double memory card day.

There is a "hippy area" near the millennium bridge which was interesting. So much going on I had to leave! Very full on... bubbles, taro readings, herbal remedies. Probably the most vibrant part of the stretch.

I don't know exactly where it is, but when the festival isn't on there are fake house fronts and stuff - just next to that area.

My advice is get off at Tower Hill and make your way down past City Hall. The closer you get to the London Eye the more mainstream it gets. More mainstream = more people, so I guess it depends what you want pictures of.

Lots of beer tents (and toilets) along the way.

So I hit the festival today and was pleasantly surprised. I walked the length of the event and saw plenty to photograph although nothing that was particularly exciting/unusual. I got a few good shots of the Korean Taikwondo (sp) team and a few generic crowd snaps. Ate some great Spanish food and even had a pint watching the skateboarders do their stuff on the South Bank. Seeing as there were so many people taking pics of them they had no choice but to act as subject matter today, any other day and I've known them to get quite ratty about it heh.

Oh yeah I also saw a guy with with a 'Talk¦Photography' neck sling, made me smile :)

I was in the area Saturday with the camera without realising it was on till the day. Plenty to shoot and take, I did get hassled twice though, once by the fountain area above the Lord Mayor's building, the security guard asked if I was selling the photos or for personal use and I said personal, he muttered something on his radio said sorry and buggered off.

Later on I was down the other side of the building by the Stripes vs Spots cadburys thing or whatever it was just watching people in the wind machine making fools of themselves :) I was approached by a lovely young girl who decided to stick a spots octopus on the back of my hand as another woman approached and said we have a press photographer, I said I wasn't press or even taking photos so she wandered off. Octopus lady left me then the other one returned with a guy at a slight distance and said I couldn't take photos as there where children around, I looked around and struggled to spot at most at three reiterated the point that I wasn't even taking photos at which point the guy at a distance moved closer and said we don't want any trouble to which I pointed out at least 5+ other people taking photos said whatever I can't be bothered you're obviously just protecting your brand and walked off, they both muttered something as I walked away but I really couldn't be arsed to look back.

After this I spotted a Romanian folk band singing away and dragging people up to dance so I went over to these, right bunch of characters, one approached and I thought here we go again but was really nice and got chatting which ended up with him giving me his email address so I could mail him a few snaps. He was probably doing it to a few people with big cameras and after free photos but he was the opposite of the corporate lot and got a lot more out of me and made the day better :)

You reminded me - as it happens, the organisers are running a competition for photos taken over the weekend

http://www.thamesfestival.org/photo_competition/detail/photo_competition_2010

The Rules said:
Photo Competition Rules:

How to enter:

1. Photographs must be taken at The Mayor’s Thames Festival on 11 or 12 September 2010 and must be original and taken by you. It is the photographer’s responsibility to obtain the appropriate permissions. Please do not submit portrait photographs of children unless you have expressly gained the permission of their parent or guardian.

...

6. The competition is only open to amateur photographers who do not derive more than 10% of their income from photography.

...

8. All commercial rights to the images remain with the photographers, with the following exceptions:
*a) The Thames Festival Trust (a registered charity) has the right to use all entries in any future publicity material (print or electronic) without payment – subject to crediting the original photographer.*This includes the right to grant use of the image by third parties solely for the purpose of promoting the Thames Festival.
b) All the sponsors of the photocompetition, and organisations providing the prizes have the same right to use the images to promote the competition as the Thames Festival.

So how is an amateur entering supposed to know what the 'appropriate permissions' are?

Anyhow, glad your day ended on a bit of an up.

Yeah I was a bit put off by the whole anti-photogarpher vibe but figured I'd just snap away until I got told to f*** off. I asked a few people if I could take their pics but most were too busy doing other things so I just tried my luck. I took a pic of a stall whilst my wife was chatting ot the owner and they suddenly got the hump and told us to go away lol. I guess they're worried about copyright but I noticed they were selling tshirts with potentially copyrighted material on them i.e. they hadn't paid for the right to use them, so figured I should probably move on before they got angry. Must admit I hardly got any other hassle so I guess having my wife about helped the situation.

Was out and about at various of the events on both days - didn't pick up the anti-tog vibe at all and definitely didn't get any hassle from anyone. In fact, it was probably the most people out and shooting with proper cameras that I've ever seen in London - pretty cool really.

A few of my shots from the weekend:

1. The extremely popular and no-doubt lucrative Helter Skelter.
