Texture layers?

When you take pics for adding texture layers, is there any special technique?
In focus, over/under expose etc or is it just all down to artistic merit?

Do you simply just take a pic of anything you think might look good as a texture layer?

In focus and normal exposure, I can tweek those in PS later (if I need to) the final effect is more down to the blend modes and opacity of the layers.
I often take shots of rust or cracked textured, handy for a "grunge" look.

As stated, take them at the best DOF and exposure that you can. All the other "creative" stuff you can do in photoshop.

Any special reason for asking?
