Tethering setup: Canon EOS Util, Bridge CS6, Canon 5D2, Window 7 Laptop

All working brilliantly, except images shot in portrait don't rotate automatically as the orientation information is not included in the metadata from the 5D2.

Anyone know if it's possible to change the default image orientation in the Preview panel in Bridge CS6, please? Seems a bit silly to turn the laptop on its side, lol

Ctrl + Alt + <left arrow> or <right arrow> whichever is applicable

Thanks, Rob, but I must be doing something wrong. I open Bridge, go to the Preview Panel and then use Ctrl+Alt+Arrows, but nothing happens for me.

Any idea where I'm going wrong, please?

I Google for Bridge shortcut keys, but these weren't listed.

The Ctrl+Alt combination seems to be all about filters. (Which I found really useful!)

Crrl+Alt+Arrows is a general windows shortcut, not a bridge specific one.

It should rotate your entire screen.

Yep, that's what I found. It doesn't seem to work on my Windows 7 though. I was able to do it via the Screen Resolution area though.

It's an idea, Rob, but not quite what I'd like. Operating the mouse becomes a bit of a challenge! :)

I looked at a bunch of portrait shots that were made while tethered and most were in landscape. We could assume that that was artistic choice, but many of them were clearly taken to be cropped into portrait format afterwards.

Do you have the auto rotate set on the camera? I believe it can be set to autorotate the camera review, the computer view, or both. (I don't shoot Canon).

There is no auto-rotate on the Canon 5D2. That's why i would need to manually set the rotate to happen in bridge.

Hmmmm, I have 3 Win 7 machines and it works on all of them. Maybe there is a way to disable it.

Regardless, even if I apply it via the control panel, it's not a workable solution for me, unfortunately. Sorry, Rob :)

Why on earth would Canon miss out such a useful feature?

Page 164 would tend to say you haven't read your manual:rolleyes:

Aye... I can attest to the fact is will auto rotate.

Mike: Thanks for the help, but no need to be a smartass about it. Just answer peoples' questions. It may surprise you, but I have worked out how to turn the camera around ;) Viewing a portrait image in landscape rotation means wasting a lot of the LCD.

Sunny: Thanks, I did miss that. However, I don't want them to rotate on the camera, I want them to rotate in Bridge preview :)

Ah, sorry Jenny. Misunderstood. Many apologies. :)

You're very welcome:eek:

Pretty sure there was a setting on that page for rotating the image when the camera was connected to the PC too.

I've shot tethered with the EOS utils on a 5Dii, and I found the connection to be hit and miss, might have been the hardware.
however, one thing that I did with my laptop was to turn it on it's side....
the 17" laptop, at range, didn't let my model know what I wanted, so I used the entire screen instead in portrait orientation.
Not elegant and not a software setting but it was the best solution to my issue.
I did think that it was possible however

what about this setting in EOS util?View attachment 27061

Thanks DizMatt,

This looks promising and I gave it a try.

There are two settings for auto-rotate in camera. The rotation works fine on the camera preview, but neither setting makes any difference to rotation once they are downloaded.

The Rotate Image in EOS Utils has always been set on, I'm guessing it's the default, but this make no difference either.

I'm going to call Canon CPS Support tomorrow and see if they know anything. This has bugged me for ages, time to find out how it works!

I also had the idea of turning my laptop sideways. It works, but makes it hard to go back and forth through images to compare shots.

I'll post tomorrow after I've spoken to Canon.

Both the image orientation and the camera orientation is included in the exif for the 5DII (lines 18/96). http://www.gregsamborski.com/what-metadata-is-written-to-canon-5d-mark-ii-files/

I *think* what gets written into those fields is affected by your playback rotation settings. And I *think* that if you set it to auto rotate for computer it should rotate automatically in Bridge.
My first post above showed the menu screen with rotation enabled on both the camera and monitor. You have the options of off/both/either.

Thanks for your reply, SK. I tried both rotation settings on the camera, but they only effect the image on the camera LCD playback and make no difference on the PC.

FIXED!!!! You made me think, is this a camera/Bridge problem or a Windows problem. So I searched for problems with Windows 7 rotation and it turns out it is a known Microsoft issue.

http://forum.obviousidea.com/threads/66-Auto-rotation-of-images-in-Windows-7

The fix is to install the following which include new codecs that support the rotation properly:-

http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/downloads/

It now works exactly as it should. So a portrait images fills the LCD and does not rotate on camera, but it does rotate automatically when downloaded.

When tethered, turn off the image rotation in the EOS Utility preferences (makes no sense, I know!) and it works as it should.

FINALLY got this sorted after so long and for the princely sum of $15

Now I want to try using a Wifi SD card and see if it will work without a cable!

I'll start a new thread ...

Could you explain further, please? I don't understand why this would make a difference.

The Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right shortcut to rotate the entire screen. It is not a windows 'thing', it's a shortcut used by the driver for your graphics adapter, so it depends on the driver, adapter and settings as to whether the shortcut works.
