I am interested in the idea of tethering to a tablet in order to make life with my new TS-E lens easier in terms of focus etc for landscapes.

Ideally I'd be looking at being able to use the DSLR Controller ap for Andriod with a 10" tablet (I think a 7" would be too small?). I'd also be looking to use the tablet as an e-reader.

I do have a notebook which I could use with EOS Utility to cover the photography side of things, however was thinking a tablet would be alot more portable and therefore more likely to be used.

Does anyone else use tethering for photography outside of the studio? How do you get on and what do you use? :help:

A 10.1 inch is quite large to take out as a remote controller, a 7 inch would be better in that respect, heck even something around 5" makes a huge difference over the rear screen.

With respect to tablets make sure that android 4 (icecream sandwich) is available for it as not all can be upgraded to 4 at present.
Off the 10.1 tablets I would probably be looking at the samsung galaxy 2 or the acer 10.1 as both run android 4.

There is a list on the apps web site as to which tablets/phones and operating systems it will work with.
Depending on the tablet's connectors you may need a USB host lead as well but they aren't very expensive this site seems to have a good price on them click here

Thanks for the input Ian :)

I think I need to go into a shop and handle a 7 and a 10 in this case... I did like the Samsung Tab 2 but hubby showed me a review which wasn't exactly glowing.

I assume that the Google Nexus 7 which is released this month will work with the Controller ap... is there any reliable way to tell? It's meant to be alot of product for a good price so that might still be an option if a 10 is too big.

I got the cable to use my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone as a backup device with 32Gb microSD in the phone and USB sticks to store seperately while away travelling.

Have just purchased the DSLR Controller app and was having a quick play over the weekend but need to spend some more time with it. Unfortunately it's highlighted that I need to spend some more money and purchase a tripod :D

I was initially looking at getting a Asus Transformer tablet but have put that on hold as I don't think I'd use it much other than at home due to the size, but in a studio/home environement it would work very well with a 10inch screen from my experience so far.

I like the look of the new Google Nexus 7, for the money the 16GB version looks a bargain!

Just check the tablet you want supports USB host mode. Pretty much just means it can supply power to a plugged-in device. I got an HP Touchpad during the fire sale, and it turns out it doesn't support USB host, so it can't see my camera without being plugged in to my computer at the same time. It's a bit rubbish. I'm really tempted to sell the Touchpad and get a Nexus 7 when it comes out, it looks awesome!

Yeah DSLR Controller will work on the Nexus 7, it has USB host mode, I checked :)

Hi Chris,

I remember trying to get hold of one of those HPs but didn't manage it...

I am going to PCWorld / Currys tonight to check out the offerings in the flesh so will look out for the USB host mode you mention.

The Nexus 7 is tempting - but I have reservations about memory not being expandable and reading bad things about the Asus Transformer. Also, i might be able to stretch my money to a 3G version if only getting a 7", which of course Google won't be producing.

I really am having a hard time working out what's best!

Most Icecream sandwich devices should support usb host with the cable.
The only thing to watch out for with the nexus is availability as its already banned from sale in the USA due to patent fights with apple.

Its Samsung's Galaxy Nexus phone thats been banned, not the Nexus 7 (well not yet anyway!)

I'm liking the look of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with 3G. Only 8GB but you can use a 32GB SD in it too...
