Tethered capture in Lightroom

I have LR5 and under File there is the option for tethered capture. I connect my 5D3 and get the control button but also get a message that the camera isn't recognised. Is there something in the menu I should be tweaking or is there some other problem that I'm unaware of?
 
Well, strange developments. I changed the cable and it now works. That's technology for you!

5D3 now works in Lightroom with tethered capture. Not a full camera control system, but good enough to see a decent size image on screen.
 
Just my way of working not saying it's for everyone but if you find lightroom tethering a bit lacking for control...

I prefer to shoot through a seperate tethering program I use http://digicamcontrol.com. I shoot nikon so I like the fact it is free and imo awesome but as you're canon I think they have their own free tethering app which is meant to be great, so up to you what to use. I then set lightroom to monitor the folder it captures to so I can still use lightroom to review and process images as they come in.

Working this has the following key advantages for me (some things may be down to me not exploring ligthroom fully)...
  1. can get option to shoot to camera and pc for redundancy
  2. can create redundant copy on pc as well if need by setting lightroom to copy files rather than move
  3. can control camera through pc if needed as digicamcontrol offers full control of camera
the potential downsides are that it's another app that can potentially crash, it adds more strain on your pc if it's not very fast and it's slightly slower as there are 2 import stages.

Working this way won't fix a dodgy usb cable however :).
 
Canons app that comes with your camera is great if you want to control the camera remotely, or also save the images to disk - handy if timelapsing, say an image every 10 secs. Lightroom tethered is really so you can see an image on a big screen while you shoot, rather than chimping ont he back of the camera. Very handy if you use the second monitor function in your eyeline as you shoot in a studio.
 
I agree that Canons app is excellent for camera control. In fact you can configure Lightroom so that it automatically imports from the canon location, so best of both worlds . However if you simply want a straight import then Lightroom works well
