Ok my apologies if I am posting in wrong place been a while.I now have new camera Nikon D5200 rather than kit lens i got a 50mm 1.4 for it.I find this camera a nice size and weight for me,also I haven`t really picked up a camera for a while, I have touch arthritis in right hand.Anyways as weather here in scotland been rubbish I have been trying camera out indoors. At the moment I am shooting in Aperture mode and just playing about with iso and shutter speed I have camera set up to shoot Raw/Jpeg for now. These are a crop from Raw file and jpeg file straight out of camera just posting this for interest and to say hello, and obviously thoughts from people if you feel like it would be most appreciated.Looking forward to experimenting and finding my way around this new camera it seems have plenty of options for this old fella.:)

Raw File

It's a cat picture, but it's nicely exposed, focus is good, framing is appropriate, DOF is used well to hint at the world outside the window without being distracting and you seem to have the whole cat in focus.

The JPEG seems to be the preview thumbnail - it's very low-resolution.

Ah I am a bit of a noob at this yup it is same pic I was just trying show the different way that the camera was saving file as raw and jpeg.Yup hopefully once weather improves i can get out and about and get outdoor shots, cats are getting fed with me taking there pics.Thnx for reply :)

What do you mean that it is a crop from a RAW file? It would have to have been converted to another format to allow you to display it.

Don't get confused. It's only a RAW file until you convert it to upload somewhere etc.

As i i say i`m quite new to most this been a while thank you :) it was a crop from raw which I converted to jpeg to display is that right?

Sort of :)

The raw file is not one that can be seen without some s/w that converts the raw data into a visible format. Some refer to the raw file as a digital negative, which is an ok analogy I guess. It is just a data file though. Any raw converter will render an image so you you can see what your effects your edits have. In some cases the s/w saves the changes to another file and doesn't touch the original, in other cases the original file is altered (though often the changes are logged). If it is saved as a raw file it will remain just a data file though (Nikon NX2 has this behaviour - or did, don't use it anymore). To use the image the raw converter then processes the data and produces the output format, usually jpeg but sometimes tiff (or psd) etc .

ta for that I will try understand it :)
