I've just bought a shiney (well its black but hey) new camera :woot: . The fuji e900. On paper its got everything I want :thumb: but so often the camera doesn't live up to the specs so I want to put it through its paces as I can't find any decent reveiws of it. If it fails the test shots then it'll go back to jessops for a refund.

However I don't know what shots highlight potential problems what should I be pointing my camera at to see how much noise it puts out for example? Or where am I likely to get purple fringing?

I can't test the RAW capabilties as fuji (AKA stingy gits) include a 16mb xd card and 1 raw shot is 18 mb
 
Noise is usually most obvious in low light. Combine low light with maximum optical zoom and you will get grainy images due to noise. You will need a higher (or highest) iso setting - or just use auto with flash turned off.
How much noise is acceptable is of course subjective.

Purple fringing happens in areas of high contrast. tree branches with a bright sky behind will have a purple edges if you are getting fringing. Often worse at the edge of the image - least it is on my Oly 5050.
 
Just to add.... Back when I got the Oly the reviews made a big thing of the purple fringing. truth is if you take the right image to cause it you can see it. However in normal use that is less than 1 in a 100 (unless you are into trees against the sky). It is also relatively easy to fix in software (so I read somewhere :) ) I never bothered. You don't see it at normal print size.

So look at 'normal' shots for problems rather than setting out to create them.

Must be some nice detail in there.

Does this camera come with it's own RAW converter ?
I don't see it on Adobe Camera RAW. ( at least not yet )

I'm only setting out to create problems because ther is a limited time before I can return the camera and in that time I've got to work as much as possible to pay xmas bills and test this new toy. Truth be told I doubt it'll be going back its very nearly perfect for me ......... nearly but nothing is ever absolutly right.

18mb is a touch excessive I agree will have to wait to see what detail there is. Why a 9mb sensor generates a 18mb file baffles me

thats one of the niggles the software fuji gives you allows you to convert the RAW to TIFF but you can't tweak anything! for that you need their $200 (figure been used on another forum have no clue as to its accruacy) delux software or there is a freeware bit of software around that should be able to handle it. Apparently its the same inside as a fuji s9000 so if I find adobe support for that I may be able to jury rig something together
 
There was this problem with the FZ30 initially. There was ACR support for the digilux/LC1 and all that needed doing was to get a hex-editor and change the camera designation in the raw file from fz30 to the digilux and it worked fine! Somebody even wrote a very nice script to do it for you. This works because camera manufacturers generally use the same raw format for each camera they produce. All that changed was the pixel size and designation generally. I guess it is probably more in depth than that but it worked on the panasonics. sorry, probably doesn't help much but interesting info all the same!

As for the RAW file size, my panasonic produces 15.4MB files from an 8Mp sensor. I think it has to do with bit depth. The reason Canon, nikon, pentax etc raw files are smaller is because they use a lossless compression format in camera before they are written to the card. Another reason why Dslr's are more expensive. More in cam processing of files needs faster processing.

hmm now I'm curious what Gandhi sugested
anyway I've had a look around the net for the hex edit cheat and it looks pretty simple now all need is a xd card big enough to take the shots LOL
