Yes
yesh, tesoc, have been the pain in my japs eye this week.

on friday night, not having work the follwing day, i decided that it was time to give in and have a few bevvies, so i asked my 15yo sister if she fancied a drive, and off we shot, via mcdonalds for a coke, then to my favourite supermarket.

whilst there, i received a telephone call from my dad, who asked me to get him some stella artois 4%, and some low alcohol stella. so, with those, and my corona, i dashed towards the ten items or less queue.

Whilst dropping the beers on the side, and fishing for my wallet, i was approached for by one of the employees with a headset on, and asked if my sister had ID! now, bare in mind, as im a waiter, i was wearing black shoes and pants, and a white shirt, which minus a tie, is the uniform of the local high school, and my sister was "dolled up".

I couldnt believe it. now i have a certificate for licence holders, and am fully aware of tesoc's rights to refuse the sale. but seriously. how rediculous. i was buying alcohol free beer. not lambrini or blue wkd!

I think the employees in question failed to realise, that if i was buying for underage girls, then surely i wudnt bring them into the store with me???? she wasnt even carrying owt!!!

you would have thought, that the helpful staff would realise that people commiting offences, actually try and hide what they are doing?!?! :bonk:

so, because of some moron's inability to apply common sense to a situation, I had to go elsewhere, and pay more for my beer. not to mention the fact that I was very embarrassed in front of alot of people (think tea time), made to feel like a criminal, when in truth, if i caught my sister drinking, id knock her head off!!!!!

it seems wrong.

Rant Over. for now.

I think its more the fact they are covering their own arses. Its quite a severe offence for a shops alcohol to reach the hands of a minor.. they can get very heavily fined for it happening. Also you explaining to them is just words, you might be the nicest guy in the world and have the most genuine reason in the world (Which im sure is the case :p) but I think the shops staff would rather err on the side of caution and not sell you the alcohol and keep their jobs.

It is wrong, your right.. and I know how you feel being treated like a criminal (Jessops made me feel it whilst I stood there buying a few hundred £££'s worth of stuff)

I guess you now know to just leave your sister in the car :p

Regards, James

It happened to me and two of my friends once. We went in to buy a bottle of sambuca for one of my friends, friends birthdays. We were all 18, 19 & 19. I never had ID as I had lost my wallet at home but my other two friends did. We went to the check out my friend got ID'd kool gave them his MOD card. Then she asked us two? my other mate showed his and I told her my issue in losing my wallet. She refused the sale  We talked to the checkout manager still the same, the ironic thing was she said to me "I appricate that your most likely over age sir but be can't make the sale!" If none of us had ID then fair enough, If we were found out to be too young then the girl would lose her job, just covering their side of things really.

It's a pita but I can see both sides. I was once refused alcohol in an off licence as I didn't have ID. I was 24 at the time  I guess they are just covering their own backs as there is a huge crackdown on underage alcohol sales.

I got asked for ID once to buy FHM at a motorway services.

I was 29.

I thought she was joking at first, but she had to go and get her supervisor to ask if she thought I was over whatever age you have to be to buy FHM .

I dont even look young.

to comment on the o/p.

You gotta admit, if you could lose your job for serving someone you thought might possibly be under age, would you serve that person ? *

* bear in mind it appears you both looked like a couple of school kids

Obviously she was flirting with you!

I remember getting to the check out with a weeks worth of shopping plus a case of Magners and a couple of bottles of wine. I was packing and the missus was loading. Any way got to the booze and the checkout girl (who looked about 14) asked me for id.

I laughed and said that i don't carry it as i'm now 27 and have not used it for years. My other half produced hers and the girl said sorry, you both need it.

I could not believe what i was hearing, so i just turned to the missus and said 'come on we're leaving.' So we both walked out, leaving the shopping at the checkout, with most of it rung through.

Now you would think that common sense would prevail. I'm not likely to try and buy a weeks of shopping and booze if i was 16 years old now am i??

Wish checkout girls ask me for my ID . . . I'm 41. :'(

Next time fill the trolley up to the top with beer and then add one packet of nappies to the top, when it comes to pay say "oh, I haven't quite enough money, I'll need to leave something", and put the nappies back....:naughty:

It is the new law ''think 21''

if they done think you look 21 they can refuse to sell it to you.

As a retailer myself, I can see both sides of this....

It is an unfortunate situation in this country - that the blame for binge drinking britain and underage drinking, seems to be placed mainly on the retailers that sell booze. I only run a convenience store but we live in constant fear of failing a 'test purchase'. So with this in mind I can understand Tesco's point of view, as the fact is they have a pretty appalling record when it comes to test purchases. So they are obviously trying to sort their act out.

And one of the areas we are asked to crack down on is 'proxy' buying, ie Adults buying on behalf of children.

However, I also agree that common sense should prevail. I hear of so many cases like the OP - occurring more and more frequently.

Slightly off topic, but it really is scary how much Alcohol is being consumed by all classes these days (I have worked in retail since 1990) It may be something to do with the fact that despite soaring food prices - the price of beer/ wine always seems to be fairly constant (ie cheap!).

:cuckoo:

rules is rules. But too many brainless morons are using the rules as an excuse for not exercising their common sense.

Talking of Trashco, I was near Cirencester today with a car running on empty. I pulled into the supermarket thinking I'd get a good price on unleaded. 114.9p!!! what a rip off. I put in just enough to get to Cheltenham where I filled up @ 107.9p

And why don't Trashcos credit card pumps ever work?

well that is well thought out law....i don't look 21 41 maybe...

why dont that make it really simple - no id, no booze and it does not matter how old you look, if you want booze then you have to have ID.

so can a 16yr old buy a knife in a supermarket....

or a claw hammer in B+Q with out ID?...
