A couple of folks have mentioned that Tesco were short of fresh vegetables and eggs, with upturned baskets where they should be!!! Supply issues???

We went to ASDA today which hasn't been the same for quite some time with stuff I want missing for weeks or even months on end but there are usually alternatives. I haven't noticed any any supply issues at our local Tesco at all.

It's because of labor shortages and supply-chain issues, from food manufacturers to grocery stores. There simply aren't enough people to “make the goods, move the goods and sell the goods,” says Jim Dudlicek, a representative for the National Grocers Association.

according to google web

Yeah we walked out of the Folkestone branch yesterday because there was no veg. Friends had found the Dover one similarly empty earlier in the day.

There have been shortages of various products at different times in my local Morrisons for some time now. Soap and freezer bags seem to have ongoing supply problems. Veg can sometimes be poor but has improved lately.

Veg was plentiful in my local Waitrose yesterday morning.
Bought some carrots, runner beans and a swede which they proudly announced was down in price by 20p
Did see someone removing the loose outers on their onions, talk about skin a turd to save a penny.

A combination of Brexit and the Cost-of-living, apparently.

Brexit means lots of paperwork and the power costs mean that it is not that viable to grow stuff in poly tunnels, because of the cost of heating them.

I was reading that it's also shortage of workers at every point of the supply chain.

I do that, as they are priced per item, (20p ea ) it doesn't matter, and I don't want the skin falling off covering the rest of the shopping
or my kitchen floor when I un pack.

No they're not priced per item in Waitrose

If I wanted to trim anything in the shop, it would be leeks; half the weight of them is inedible! It's rather frowned upon to take a knife out in the supermarket and start cutting up the veg.

When supermarkets cease to have stocks of certain items the reason is likely to be that they have not secured a wholesale source at a price that enables them to bang on the profit margin that they want. If they cannot make the profit they want they stop stocking the item. ........................ Greed !
I shop online at Tesco and Asda. I have noticed that some products I bought regularly at Tesco are now shown as unavailable, but are stocked by Asda at a lower price than I used to pay at Tesco.

I do that as well, for exactly the same reason.

Not just Tesco's I've noticed it in all my local supermarkets Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury's as well, it's been around for quite a while but it's got a lot worse in the last few months.
The shortages are bad enough but the price rises are starting to get out of hand, before ******mas a certain brand of ketchup was £2.49 last week it was £4.49 in the same supermarket.

it was Roy from Preston mate not Boris
Just to clarify: (1) I have never heard of "Roy from Preston" and (2) I am not and never have been your "mate"...

HGV driver shortages happened as a result of a change in the TAX laws , Nearly all non UK driver were claiming to be a one man LTD company and avoiding tax on earnings , When the GOV changed the tax lawas that meant they had to pay tax on earnings they left the UK , I think most went to Germany or returned home , I had 1st hand experience of this as I was a UK HGV driver for 25 years.

Our local farm shop was fully supplied yesterday. Some of it picked fresh! Support your local farmers, they need your cash to survive. Many of our local producers just can't make a profit supplying supermarkets any more, so they have cut back on everything.

Totally agree - I virtually never buy meat and veg from supermarkets now - the meat is usually pumped up with water or obtained at uneconomic (for the farmer) prices from farmers (or not UK-sourced), and the veg is usually tasteless and likewise obtained at unfair prices. Ours all comes from farm shops now, and we never buy processed food either as it's usually rubbish ingredients chemically modified.

Where are you that they are picking tomatoes now?

A lot of the problems regarding this, we bring on ourselves, demanding fruit and veg "out of season"

However, that argument doesn't explain the shortages. If it did then we'd always have had these shortages, every year. There are other factors at work

Climate change, Brexit, differing approaches to wholesale food procuring.

Fewer items being grown because of less water and colder weather. edit and heating cost increases.
More paperwork and barriers meaning easier to sell to purchasers without those barriers.
UK supermarkets contracting for longer periods at lower prices so less able to be flexible. As I understand it other countries do have more fruit and veg than us, but it is at higher prices.

Mainly because their population demands higher quality, I suspect, rather than the cheapest price.

I never said it did

He we go again, I'm going to the swear filter to change that to something like "Happy days"

I watched a piece on the news earlier, they were at a a large market and speaking to one of the wholesalers and he was saying that fruit and veg were still available but at higher prices than supermarkets were willing pay but that the smaller shops were still buying and therefore had availability but at a price.
I suppose therein lies the problem, it's been an unseasonably cold winter in where we import our fruit and veg from and that tied to the ever increasing costs of fuel and labour have lead us to where we are.

I never said it did

I never said you did.

as for the B word, whatever the historic facts and feelings are, there are tangible effects happening now.

Now it may be that the B word has meant that we have the same or greater access to fruit and veg.

We’ve got an allotment so by the summer won’t worry about it all :p

That's OK if you like veg, which I don't particularly,
I wonder if I can start a bacon farm on one

:D

Eggs have been hard to get hold of for a few weeks now. Not been able to get those or cat food on our delivery for a while along other things which differ from week to week.

That must really mess with the omelettes.

I've never had a problem with eggs, from either Tesco or Iceland, well that is to say, the problem is the amount they are charging.
Of course the "cheap ones" shelves are empty, leaving a stack of the more expensive free range ones.

Not had eggs in a delivery for about 6 weeks, so always have to gone on a hunt around the local shops. Coop are more often out of stock than in. Pancake day was touch and go yesterday and only saved by a garden centre a couple of miles away that I knew sell duck eggs.

I've eaten duck eggs once, there is a reason for "once" :D
TBH I'd go without pancakes if that was all that was available.
Well that is, I'd put them on hold, until I could get chickens eggs.

Not bought 'cheap' eggs ever. Don't like battery farming and try to avoid it if I know it's happening. I'm quite willing to pay more for 'free-range' (even though in some cases that's a misnomer). I also think that milk isn't expensive enough and that there should be a 'farmer's levy' on top of the supermarket price so we can ensure that production remains viable in this country and makes land attractive to farm but not attractive to money-grabbing property developers! I'll stop now, I feel a BIG rant coming on.
