Yes
Though I love my D300, my eye has been wandering of late. I'm starting to consider selling up and moving to a 1d MkIII.

I can't put my finger on it - but I keep looking at similar shots taken with Nikon and Canon equipment and finding the depth of the colours (particularly where light conditions are challenging) that the Canon gear produces results more pleasing to the eye.

Someone tell me I'm nuts, please! :bonk:

The other mans grass is always greener..

Conversely I'm considering binning Canon for Nikon because I think the AF is a good bit better on the D700/D3 and the ISO performance seems better me also.

It's the perennial debate really.

Ok, you're nuts. :)

Kipax is right about the grass. The system doesn't matter so much. You are better off investing in some expensive glass. At the top end of either system, you'd probably be hard pressed to tell the difference in image output quality.

Thought: You can fix poor saturation in post. You cannot fix poor autofocus in post...

I spent ages weighing up the D300 vs the 1D MkIII for motorsport use...

My conclusion you can find in my 2008 DTM thread in the motorsport section on here, but in a nutshell, the 1D MkIII is probably better but its twice the price and you'll always have that nagging doubt about the "AF issue". The D300 I would consider to be the next choice down and head and shoulders over the third placed crop body on the market.

If you really wanted to jump ship, wait for the 1D MkIV because lets face it, Canon will HAVE to get that one right!!

Screw the bodies, find some glass you like and chose you system from that.

I'm REALLY into fast primes, so I shoot canon - 5D mk I.

If somebody made a D700 with Canon EF mount I'd be all over it. Compact FF body with nice AF... Want.

Depth of colours? I never really get this at all... we all (or nearly all) shoot RAW... does it matter about the colours that come out of the camera (within reasonable tolerances) with the software we have to hand these days?

Aye, the grass is always greener over there >>>>>>>>

I have a D700 which allows me to enhance the colours in-camera via the menu. I can choose between Standard, Neutral, Vivid or Monochrome. In each of these options you can then 'ramp it up', eg if you choose Vivid, you can then choose just how vivid you want them. I don't know if it's the same for the D300.

Yeah Jennie the D300 has all that picture control stuff, but remember thats only for jpg. I shoot a custom scratch built profile for mine, so it is a handy feature to me.

surely, if you are shooting raw youi can adjust the colors in PP - rather than fannying around with it in camera or shooting jpeg and wasting info/detail.

Which system has the lenses you want? Bodies come and go - glass is forever.

Panic over. I guess it was a shot-lived bout of "grass is greener" syndrome. My next body will be a D700 or whatever it's successor is, I would imagine.

Jayst84 - I don't list all of my glass in my profile ;)
