I like the grain you get with film and interested in getting a decent film camera.

I am tempted to get one for candid shots and use B+W film. Please let me know what is best from my following req.

1/ must use EF mount to use my existing glass
2/ preferably have provision for a grip with extra shutter.
3/ what film would be best for nice grain without silly ISO ratings.
4/ can work with a 430EZ flash (already have this for studio work)

I am probably only going to be using this wih my 50mm and 85mm prime and also maybe a 28mm prime.

On the developing side i have a basement that i can convert and i understand b+W film is not to temperature dependant (i may have got this wrong). Is this wise to try as a newbie to film developing or is it best to get it develeoped at a lab and if so which labs still process film

I'd recommend something like an EOS 3 or 5 35mm camera - they take all the lenses a Canon DSLR will and will allow you to use your flash too. Don't know about the EOS 5, but the EOS 3 does have a speed grip / booster (originally sold separately).

For film, I'd recommend Ilford FP4+ 125 or Delta 100 for fine grain and Delta 400 for some sharp but grainier exposures.

Developing - I started off using B&W film and developing myself. It's laughably easy and very difficult to screw up as long as you know what you're doing. It's not as temperature dependent as colour. There are a few threads in this forum that give advice on developing. Good luck!

Thanks looking int othe specs of the EOS 3 now and also will trall hrough and find some developing techniques!

I have just had a quick look at prices and the grip almost cost the same as the camera. Is there a good 2nd hand shop to have a gander at?

Mr Cad in Croydon are good, but that may be a bit far south for you

Not familiar with Sheffield... I bought my EOS3 and grip from a forum member here - I just placed a wanted post.

Your shouldn't pay more than £160 for an EOS3 and about another £30-£40 for the grip...

thanks for the price guide

black and white developing is temperature dependant ,,normally 20'C ,,,but not as critical as colour or slides ,,,,as for film with grain try fuji neopan 1600 and push it a stop .

towershot - it will be for balancing - i take it portrait controls are available on the grip as well. not look for speed in the grip jsut handling.
