I've been paying into an endowment policy for 20 years, it matures next month, it's not a fortune but a few grand

She's got plans for it, a new fireplace, ceilings plastered, redecoration etc etc

I've been thinking about getting a Nikkor 300mm F/4 afs then last night I made the mistake of looking at MPB,s website.

There sat a mint Nikon 300mm F/2.8 AFs for £2099 which seemed very reasonable

So reasonable that in a moment of insanity it was in the basket and it'll be here on Monday

Who needs a happy marriage anyway:boxer:, good job i've bought an oulton Park season ticket so i'll be out at the weekends for the next 6 months :D

It's my view that you only really 'rent' quality lenses. You own them for a spell and when the time comes sell them on. The real cost would only amount to peanuts for all the time you have owned it.

In fact if you have owned some lenses for a couple of years or so, you may actually make money out of them!

And if you can earn a couple of bob by using the lens, it gets even better.

You can probably get your decorating done rather cheaper now because of the economic climate. Have your cake and eat it.

Enjoy the lens. You only live once!

hmmmmmm why is it each time a man wants something shiny and pretty (a new lens in our case) we always have to do it in fear of our female companion? Damn how evil can they be :cuckoo:

meh I usually buy then tell her. found it works wonders. Enjoy your lens buddy. Hope wife will still love you after robbing her of some decor for something as useless as a stupid lens :)

SPcomp is going to be ****ed at you as he was eyeing that up. You know he will want to loan it the following weekend. That website should also be locked out of my browser.

Struck a chord there....3rd wife. I asked her what I could get for her, DIVORCE. I told her I wasn't thinking of spending that much !!

Still got her...and my camera stuff

I find the comparisons between this thread, and many on the other forum I frequent (a mountain biking forum), quite amusing.

Many people on there deliberately make sure their new bike looks to the uneducated eye very similar to the old. Surely the same tactic works for lenses?

I'll help you save your marriage by storing the lens at my house and you can borrow it whenever you want :lol::lol::lol:

As long as it never leaves your house that's fine :D

You are truly a man after my own heart, my beloved just found the bill for my new D3s and 14-24mm, if she don't talk to me she can't ask me to anything, more time to play, happy days.

Maybe you had better use just a little of the money to buy a FIRST AID KIT!! :D :bat:

It's a good job that you don't have an expensive hobby like racing cars  Look forward to seeing your photo's

You could try taking her out to buy a pair of nice , expensive, but not too expensive shoes. Maybe an afternoon of hell, but think of all those weekends at Oulton park.

See you treated yourself and have now treated her. ( I just wish in real life it was that simple  )

I had a policy mature in January... got a nice 7D now :) I bought her a new arch for the garden last week. They say it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission

It's your endowment policy. You've worked hard to keep it going. You deserve a new lens.

Re-decorating you get to look at one nice new thing. A new lens? You'll get to look at LOTS of nice new photos. How can she argue?!

TBH i'd agree with that statement, I've, er, had a few lenses:D all bought second hand and most have been sold with either no loss or little loss.

It's not like buying a car, quality lenses don't really lose money if you buy them at the right price.

Now I just need to memorise that and speak in a low voice as I say it :D

Sounds like a bloody good idea to me

Bet you can't wait for tomorrow, pop a picture up so we can all be jealous

Well it came this morning and it's raving mint, even has the original owners picking slip from nikon showing a purchase date of 14/09/00

It's that mint it looks like he took it out of the case thought "that's nice" then stuck it in a cupboard for 10 years.

As 99% of these lenses are bought for professional use this must be one of the few privately owned ones because this one has certainly never been pitchside :D

Assuming you don't get asked to spend the funds for a second time on what they had it earmarked for of course....

I don't think i'd get away with that tactic on the 300mm f/2.8, it's HUUUUUGGGEEE :D
