I've got to the stage where I need to purchase some more storage and I have been thinking about going for a NAS. Probably thinking of a ready made rather than an old PC set up, unles you think otherwise?

Anyone care to share their experiances and offer advice/options?

Thanks in advance :)

I brought a HP Microserver on a cash back offer 8/9 months ago, for 100 quid. Was like 230 with 100 cash back :)

Brought 5 2tb drives(when they were cheap) and a 8gb flash drive. Installed FreeNAS on the Flashdrive, and whack in all the hard drives. Work out at like 400 quid, maybe a little less. But works great and is silent.

So good infact, that when me and my dad finished building this one (he pay'ed :P) we built a second to back it up with :)

Chucked em, in the loft, power and network cables to both.

Easy peasy :)

They acutally run Win7 pretty well aswell.... Cheap PC hah

I have used a couple of DLink units for years and been very impressed.
I have just bought two 6Tb Western Digitial units and have one backing up to the other daily and so far no problems.

Have a look at a Linksys Slug if you already own any USB HDD's, not sure if they do a gigabit version, I have one someone in the loft but its only 100Mb which is painfully slow unless you are just using it for overnight backups.
