I'm looking into getting my father a telescope for xmas as he would enjoy just sitting down and viewing stars at night and submarines / destroyer ships on the clyde during the day.

I would be looking at spending about £50 - £150 max. The cheaper the better but I don't want to buy rubbish.

Would appreciatte any suggestions from those in-the-know.

Hmmm, not an easy one to answer. If it's just for viewing, then how about something like this

90mm is a reasonable aperture for Astronomy, and it comes with erect image optics for daytime use. I have no experience of either the seller or the scope itself though.

The other option would be something like a spotting scope, something like one of these. I have no affiliation with them, but I've always been very impressed with the service and Steve is very very helpful if you give him a call...

Also consider a pair of Binoculars, as anything larger than 10x50 will work very well for Astro use.

Thanks for your reply jgs. I found the model under that one which has an aperture of 70 and it's £80 which I think is a much more realistic price for me.

Is it the AZ or EQ version ? The AZ is going to be better for daytime use and far more intuitive for Astro.
