any other ideas for a telephoto zoom lens preferably around the 200-300mm area. i will be using it for aviation, wildlife, motorsport ect price around the £200

ive narrowoed it down to these four any opinions on which is best?
-Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG
-Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG
-Sony DT 55-200mm F4-5.6
-Sony 75-300mm f4.5-5.6

im new to DSLR photography, so any pointers would be appreciated :bonk::lol:

thanks in advance :D;)

if you can afford it (£500 at Jessops) get the Sony 70-300mm G SSM.
If you can't stretch to that personally I would get the Tamron 70-300 LD Di Macro (~£130) as imo it's as good as the Sony 75-300mm but cheaper.
The Sigma APO is better optically but has reliability issues on Alphas with AF gear teeth breaking.

the Sony/Tamron 55-200mm is a great lens for the money & for what it is but I think that you will find 200mm limiting for your purposes.

thanks for that, and sorry again for the other thread :bonk:

i'm probably gonna go for the tamron 70-300 seems like a nice lens for the money

Old Minolta A mount 75-300 lenses are among the best ever, and available at a reasonable price, here in NZ on our main trading site, Trademe, they are around $250 (our $ is worth about 43GB pence right now having dropped from 47pence during the week) On a Sony APS-C sensor, the effective focal length changes to 112-450 which is a reasonable length telephoto. Add a teleconverter, either 1.4 or 2 times magnification and there you are!

I have a Sigma 70-300 APO macro and 2x teleconverter. Does me fine!

sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead but i have still not decided on one :bonk:

any way here go, does the Sigma 70-300 APO still have the gear stripping issues with the newer alpha range ie, A230, A330, A380? and does anybody have any experience with the lens and these models.

again sorry,
tom

That's only really true for the Big Beer Can (the original metal bodied 75-300). The later plastic 75-300 is a CA monster.

The Tamron is the best in the price bracket.
