I'm going to a church event, and I want something with reasonable reach. My first thought was to rent a 70-200 f2.8 VRII or buy a second hand VR1 and sell it shortly afterwards. But the more i thought about it the more I'd prefer something smaller than the 70-200. I currently have an 85mm f1.8 (my absolute favourite lens) and a 35mm f2, so I would be definitely open to considering a prime if it meant a considerably smaller lens. Any suggestions on what might be interesting or suitable lens?

It seems the options might include ...

Nikon 70-200 f4
Nikon 180mm f/2.8 d

Get the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR11 .....brilliant lens and will give you flexibility of reach and low light ability.

For sure the 70-200 is excellent, but what could I consider that might be smaller?

Im assuming you want it fairly fast if youre shooting in a church. Theres the 105mm micro F2.8 VR, thats a great bit of glass and certainly a lot less weight and cash than the 70-200 F2.8. If you can do without auto focus a 135mm AIS lens, probably the F2.8 version would be a very lightweight option

The old, screw driven 180mm f/2.8 is pretty damn good and considerably lighter than the 70-200. What it does lack is speedy AF and VR though. (Having said that, the AF isn't exactly a slug compared to MF, just not as speedy as a more modern AF-S lens!)

And there seems to be an interesting samyang 135mm f2 lens recently launched as well
