Hi all,

Christmas is coming and sure enough I'm getting a new lens :)

I currently have nothing above 70mm (only have a sigma 17-70) and I'm looking to get something fill the void! I am looking to spend around 300 quid.

The main option I'm considering is the Canon 70-300mm IS USM (not the DO version)

Would anyone else have any other suggestions at this price?

Thanks,
Eddie.

Hmm secondhand 70-200mm F4L, granted it not 300mm & has no IS but being L glass optically alot better.

I had thought about that, just a little put off by the white ness of those things!! I'm quite new to photography and feel a little self conscious at times and this wouldn't help!! Also more likely to get mugged on the streets of London with one of these!!!

Thanks for the suggestion though folks :)

I was like that at first, didn't like walking about anywere really were people were about because i felt they proberly thought i was somekind of werido lol.

But you do get use to it and some people comment on ya stuff which gives ya abit of a buzz really.

As for being mugged well I live in Wigan and there is quiet a few places full of Druggies & gangs of Chavs were i stay clear off at any time of the day, as walking about with over a grands worth of stuff strapped to ya neck and back is just asking for it, as one of my pals found out.

So i tend to keep to were it well populated and if i go about town.

I guess you do get used to these things. But I think I'm going to stick with the 70-300 seeing as it's my first long lens and maybe think about upgrading to an L lens later. Maybe as in incentive/ something to work towards in a few years. This lens seems to hold its value pretty well so wouldn't cost loads to upgrade perhaps if I chose to.

Cheers.

The new EF-S 55-250 IS could be worth a look. A few of the first tests to appear online suggest it's got very good resolution and, coming in around 200 quid complete with IS, could be a real bargain.
