Hello all,

I am considering on buying a telephoto lens for my Canon 600D and not sure on what should I invest on. My budget is around £300 I don't mind if its used or new.

As the Canon lenses are quite expensive I was looking on some third party lenses like the Tamron 18-270mm or Sigma 18-250mm.

What would you suggest I should do?

Thanks for looking!!

Used 70-200 f/4L if you can stretch to it.

Would suggest the 55-250mm IS for around £160 if you can't stretch to the 70-200f4L

For telephoto lens with 300 budget....
I may go for 55-250mm

but if you had that one already and looking for an upgrade
buy 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM....
this is a good choice for entry level with image stabliser, USM and reaching 300mm

If you are looking for larger range like the tamron 18-270...
you need to consider that the end range (200-270mm) may not be sharp
and focus should be quite slow

Simple. 70-200 F4 L Beware though, it will lead to a desire for good quality lenses....

Very true, so far I've managed to resist the temptation of a Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS USM II only because the prices are going up due to the recent events. Once things settle down and the price comes back down near £1500 I might just have to give in. :nono:

I've bought a 55-250mm from Canon eBay in the meantime.

If you can find a second-hand copy for around £300, the Canon 70-200 F4L is a stunning lens. Otherwise, the Canon EF-S 55-250mm is a great lens for the price, around £160ish.

Both the lenses you list are superzooms (or hyperzooms) rather than telephotos because they go from very wide (18mm) to pretty long (250mm). Telephoto lenses go from fairly long (say 70mm) to longer (say 250mm).

So assuming it's superzooms you're interested in I used to have the Sigma 18-200 OS and I quite liked it, it certainly did me well for a couple of years and helped me work out what sort of photography I wanted to do. I don't know which of the Canon, Sigma and Tamron is considered best at the moment but hopefully someone with experience of them will be along soon :)
