I currently have a Canon 70-200 F4 IS L and am really happy with it but I would like something with more reach. Because of this I think I may as well trade it for something else but I would like a similar IQ. I'm thinking of perhaps getting the Sigma 100-300 F4 EX and a 1.4 extender for when I want further reach (as a possible straight swap due to the prices) but I'm not sure if I would miss the stabilization too much. Then again I would probably need a tripod/monopod anyway from reviews on similar focal lengths with IS. The reviews for the sigma are really good. But there is also the new BIGMA with OS. I would have to pay some extra for this but I'm not sure if the quality would be as good even though it is a good lens. Also I don't get the fixed aperture which I would like really. Any other suggestions would be also be appreciated.
 
Unfortunately, there's nothing longer in the sub-4000 GBP range that can match the IQ of the 70-200/4L IS.. The 300/2.8L IS just sneaks in at 4k.

So a compromise needs to be made.. what are you shooting and what kind of budget? I am torn with this same dilemma myself, but it will probably wait until spring that I can fork out enough to get a decent lens..

You've not mentioned the 100-400L? Widely regarded as one of the best in this area.
 
Have you thought about a Sigma 120-300 F2.8 with a converter, stunning lens.

A bit pricey for me really. I have had a look at the old Tokina 400mm 5.6 primes which go for no money and they seem very good all things being considered and means I can keep my 70-200 and have a 400 prime too. Might go that way if I can find one cheap.

Excellent idea, the thing to remember is if you buy something and find it does not meet your needs you can probably sell it for much the same as you brought it for.
 
Yes the 100-400L is a very good and popular choice, but at f/5.6 it's a bit slow.. It can't touch the 70-200/4 for IQ though. And an extender makes it go AF-blind.

Canon should really really make a 200-400/4L IS. Or maybe a EF-S tele for us 7D owners :)
 
5.6 at 400mm isn't that slow... and unless you have £1000s lying about your not going to get much faster.

The 100-400 is a cracking lens... where are you based Andy, if your nearish to me you can try it out ;)
 
From what I've seen the new bigma cant touch the 100-300 for IQ, so its +1 for that and the 1.4x.

PS theres a nice one on the bay for £475 at the moment.. I was tempted but couldn't stretch my budget that far.

I'm in shropshire so a bit far away but thanks for the offer. I've been thinking sadly that as much as I want a big un I should really first some more lenses suitable for my wedding and portrait work like a 50 1.4 or 85 1.8, a second speedlight and maybe upgrade my backup which is a 30d so maybe I should put it on the back burner for a bit. But thanks for all the suggestions
